1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. The spirit of the age was to be our brother's and our sister's keeper. Director Ken Loach has used film from Britain's regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews to create a rich political and social narrative. The Spirit of '45 hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.1945 was a pivotal year in British history. 100 % In agreement, I can think of no other government, in the history of this country, that achieved so much for so many people with so little resource.

Incidentally, people are more inclined towards being nice when they are not engaged in a competitive struggle for advantages - when resources are no longer scarce and there is plenty to be shared.

Its hard not to admire Loach for using a documentary form not a narrative one- particularly if he hopes to both inform and inspire young people with the political choices behind British institutions. A devised story might have more immediate dramatic impact and box office draw, but it's ordinary people's views juxtaposed against one another that's more powerful in the long-run

You have the idea backwards. It's not: "he gets paid more than me, pay him less", it should be "He gets paid more than me, pay me the same".

car plants in places like Swindon (Honda) and Merseyside are still booming - sadly though a lot of the profit, almost all the R&D, shareholders and status go straight back to the country which owns them.Now quite WHY the UK had to throw away it's indigenous ship building, car manufacture, train building, electronics industries to foreign contries back in the 1970's & 80's is a mystery I'm still working on - it's not all down to Tory v Labour policies.

Individual liberty is somewhat of a myth. Human beings are either bound to civil organisation (society) or are bound to wild nature, and determine their individual choices by condition of circumstance in relation to others. From the moment you work with another person you become mutually dependent, and prosper from the exchange of benefits and advantages attained through co-operation. The individual absolutely requires the effort and co-operation of others for personal sustenance and survival.
@spartikirk109
@spartikirk109 11 лет назад
Libertarian socialism, based on voluntary association, doesn't require forms of authoritarian coercion or violence. Responsibility and obligation to others is implied naturally in any form of co-operation you undertake. It's like having a mutual exchange of favour and not wishing to let others down who are depending on you. You simply make informed, educated choices about what you want for yourself, knowing there is always a cost and a benefit to you.

Some posh bloke coming out of the cinema, in a typically haughty tone, said: "Does nuuuo-one remember the 1970's for goodness sake". Did he expect a Ken Loach film to frame Margaret Thatcher as the saviour of the sick man of Europe?
@revol148
@revol148 11 лет назад
for sure (as with all of Europe) there has been a restructuring in the manufacturing sector in the UK (stories in the early 1970's of losing your job in one factory in the west Midlands on a friday and starting a new on monday morning are GONE forever).I'm tempted to suggest that the recession in the early 1980's was made far worse by the government of the day but I have a feeling you would scratch my eyes out!

The single best government this country ever had; it should be a source of great embarrassment for the coalition that they achieved so much in the face of such adversity

oh just up to my usual habit of bigging up superior countries whenever the opportunity arises. Always questioning why can't we as a country be more like Norway,Germany or Austria.David Cameron made a speech a few years back when he said that we didn't have a right to our high standard of living - it can be as easily won as it can be lost.

More than we will ever know, not only was there poverty and homelessness, the currency was devastated by the Germans too. Over a quarter of the first loan from the US was used to defend the pound as the Germans had flooded the market with duds. On top of this a million military veterans were due to be demobbed into a society where there was no work, poverty, devastated infrastructure, mass homelessness and as much class distinction as there ever was. What do you think could have happened?

manufacturing is still massive in the UK (far bigger than France for example).

Of course you understand as with the recent discussions over the legacy of Thatcher her biggest cheerleaders/apologists tend almost exclusivey to be the rich and powerful (and a few token thick working class people who thought voting for a right-wing party makes them feel sophisticated).Poltics is all based on life experiences - and your experinences particularly in the world of work have a direct way on your political persuation.

Not necessarily worthless but certainly evil.We homo-sapiens can put a man on the moon,can design computers and find cures for diseases and yet looking at the world today we are just simply clueless in sorting out all the problems we as a species face: for example does anyone look at car ownership in a congested city and HONESTLY think that is the most efficient way to travel from A - B? Clearly they do hence all cities (other than Singapore) are gridlocked for most of the working day.

What was a problem for your country at the time was that your empire had fallen apart - and the money that came from there was gone. Blame that on Labour all right.
@revol148

there needs to be a balance as far as unions and managments are concened (in the 1970's the unions had too much power which ended up in the power of the capitalists after the Thatcher revolution).When I drifted in my mid to late 20's (late 1990's early 2000's) I found myself in loads of jobs which were atrociously paid while the owners had tonnes of money which they would rather keep than paid their workers! Even at the time I was aware that if I was in a union my wages would have been higher!
@revol148
@revol148 11 лет назад
the deregulation of the labour market under the Thatcher revolution ensures that British workers are one of the most "flexible" in Europe - i.e easy to fire as they are to hire.This is in complete contrast with civilised countries like Germany which which is very enlightened indeed and yet they are so way ahead compared to a fucked country like the UK.Still I suppose what do you expect from such a dog-eat-dog economic theory."Wages got higher and Inflation was lower" - where did I say otherwise?

capitalism is satisfying need for profit, socialism is satisfying peoples needs. Bravo for the movie, and big respect to all the people that were interviewed in it, they far smarter, more moral, and better people than any CEO or politician you gonna hear in your life. Bravo. Bravo

"easy to hire and fire" - e.g foreign owned companies investing in psuedo-first world countries like the UK fire the workers in that country BEFORE countries where it is harder to sack people.The redundency terms for German, Dutch, Swiss workers are incredibly generous (or enlightened as I'm sure you wouldn't call it) compared with barbarian countries like the US and UK.Face facts the UK is an embarassement compared with so many countries - just ask any Scandanavian.

they worked together because Stalin was to thick (most dictatorships are run by thick working class people have you noticed that?) to realise that Hitler was going to eat him alive soon after and in any case slicing Poland in half made the advance into Ukraine and then onto Moscow that much more easier."Learn your history" - when you have a moment can you google "operation Barbarossa" for me - cheers! Two rats metaphor: fair point - however what's so wrong with the lesser of two evils scenario?
@revol148
@revol148 11 лет назад
your politics are quite complicated then - I was under the impression that you were a Tory cheerleader - the fact that you seem to have disdain for both parties is in my eyes promising.I believe people need to be free (hence libertarian) YET believe that capitalism is way too brutal (e.g the horrors of Dickensian London) for everyone to be left to their own devices.Hence when it comes to voting it is a personal struggle to be honest.

Please don't even bother to compare the UK with Germany (they are superior in almost all instances!) They have outclassed the UK since the time of Bismark.Even in battle the Germans crushed the British: Dunkirk,Crete,Arnhem.Still 75 -80% of the German army was destroyed on the Eastern front - sadly as a result of the cold war such facts were airbrushed out of British history books and it was all down to RAF spitfire pilots who won the WW2 single-handely for us!

What is your beef with working rights exactly? You appear to be against any sort of workers representation. Are you Kelvin MacKenzie? You appear to be as morally bankrupt and just as ill informed. As the true old saying goes, 'There's no such thing as a right wing intellectual.'
