In the fourteenth episode of Satya Samvad, Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar talks about how nationalism is inherently spiritual, especially in the Bharatiya context. In a world where politics and nationalism have become uber-mechanistic and even been weaponized, it is important to understand the premise of Bharat itself and what connects us to it, for delineating what nationalism could mean for a more sustainable and Dharmic tomorrow. Luminaries like Sri Aurobindo, Acharya Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda spoke of the oneness inherent in Darshanas and Indian Knowledge systems like Vedanta as the basis for bringing together the diversity that we see in Bharat. Dr. Guha Majumdar highlights verses from the Vedas to reinforce the idea that the conceptualization of national identity is inherently transcendental. The key to harnessing this thought would be to look at how this transcendentalism can help us attain balance between the universal and the contextual, the dialectic and the practical, as a nation.

What I like about this monologue is the freshness of thought. In a world of BJP and Congress, we need to think of what brings us together as a nation. We must remember what it means to be Indian! Jai Hind

Spiritual nationalism thought can be considered only from view of Hindu religion. This ideology is good and if nurtured it will be able to create hard core, dedicated nationalist people , which is need of hour. Please present it in regional languages for greater awareness, धन्यवाद.

People mixing spirituality with religion in the comments just show their colonized minds. What Mrittunjoy is speaking of (as per my understanding) is a spiritual aspect, not some Abrahamic church-state nexus! Good episode!

A lot of good ideas and useful connection of various perspectives. However, the speaker uses a reading aloud style rather than a speaking style with a roadmap of his lecture followed by segments, summary of key points and transition markers. The lecture would be so much more easier to understand and assimilate.

We are working on providing the digital markers for segments, even as we speak. Thank you for your suggestion 🌸🙏

Here in Canada, I cannot accept the word "nationalism" being connected with religion. That approach of separating "church and state" seems like a rule of "common sense." I consider myself a "spiritual person" living in a material world that is expressed through a philosophy of politics. I do wish that "political ideals" would include spiritual values, but often the emotional attachment of national "pride and passion" leads to abuses of all "others" who do not share the various religious ideals that can be far from "spiritual." The dislike and rejection of "The Other" is the main problem with human nature creating wars and massacres from the paranoia so frequently seen in people "choosing" one "faith" over another. You know Rajiv that Gandhi's plan of separating Hindus in India from Muslims in Pakistan caused huge turmoil and 50,000 dead. These examples are everywhere in various human societies, and the violence never stops. The "prejudice" begins at home, parents denigrating others as less than or evil, and if a religion is offered that separates YOUR group from another, you will find yourself "hating" someone without even knowing it. As a Canadian, our large number of "immigrants" from Europe who replaced indigenous population are now faced with new immigrants with many different cultural and religious traditions. We need a "plurality consensus" accepting many different cultures and belief systems. "Canadian Nationalism" consists of the "enjoyment" of sweet, spicy, hot ideas of self and many tastes of interesting persons from all over the planet. As some of India creates a modern community of Hinduism, you all have to realize that planet Earth has billions of life forms, flowering plants being especially abundant in different sorts of reproductive methods in those "joyous multiplicity" of all life. Humans being the most grand existence that we know of, and a very special "life form" capable of both fantastic imagination and horrifying violence against other humans. We need religions that don't create "differences" to fight about.

Note: Arundhati Roy is "under attack" with anti-terrorism charges by Modi's "Hindu Government." Do you see how religious nationalism destroys community into a totalitarian authority??????????? See Democracy Now! story on Roy from a few days ago...this is the reality of Religious Prosecution, my friends.
