The Stadium That Never Got Its Team - Alamodome - The Failure of the Alamodome

It's May 15, 1993, San Antonio, Texas. The Alamodome has just opened to the public as the new home for the San Antonio Spurs NBA team. The 65,000 seat stadium is a beacon of modern features and ingenuity, designed to lure an NFL team to the growing city of San Antonio. It’s now been over 30 years after the stadium broke ground, the NFL team never came, and even the spurts moved out after only 9 years. What went wrong at the Alamodome? How did a massive modern stadium not attract an existing NFL franchise, or an expansion team at a time when the NFL was handing them out like candy? Let's find out.
The Alamodome was designed to be modern by early 1990s standards. The stadium itself is roughly in the shape of a rectangle. It has 5 levels and seats a standard crowd of 65,000 but this can be expanded to host high profile events like the Super Bowl by adding an additional 7,000 seats. The stadium was also planned to open with 66 luxury seats, but only opened with 38 of them situated near the Spurs basketball court. The other boxes were set to be built when the future NFL franchise moved in, but this never happened. Eventually in 2006 14 more suits were added to the facility, but the space has never been built out to its fully intended suite number.
While the NFL didn’t move a franchise to the stadium, the League did test the waters. Throughout the 1990s from the opening of the stadium in 1993 and up until 2001 the NFL hosted 6 preseason games at the facility. It wasn’t until 2005 that the NFL truly gave the then 12 year old Alamodome a fighting chance.
With hurricane Katrina having battered the Superdome, the New Orleans Saints needed somewhere to finish their 2005 season. The Alamodome stepped in to serve as an emergency stadium while the Superdome was either repaired or replaced. The Saints played their week 4, week 6, and week 16 games at the Alamodome. The other home games were played at LSU’s Tiger Stadium and the New York Giants Stadium. The home games at the Alamodome were a massive success with despite the short notice, the Saints averaged just over 62,000 fans, nearly selling out the venue on average. The NFL liked the results they were seeing and some officials indicated that San Antonio would be on the shortlist for any future expansions. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones even publicly stated he would support a San Antonio NFL team, although some people speculated his statement wasn’t genuine. In the end the Superdome was repaired in time for the following season, and the San Antonio Saints experiment was a short-lived success.
On April 15, 2005 (prior to the Saints temporarily moving in) the San Antonio City Council voted to spend $6.5 million dollars in renovations and updates to the facility, with an additional $8.3 million approved in early 2007 in an effort to lure either an MLS or NFL team to the facility. Neither of these update plans would work.
By today’s standards, the Alamodome is a relic of the past. NFL teams now want large glass stadiums with limitless amounts of luxury boxes for high roller fans. The Alamodome on the other hand is somewhat claustrophobic, with little to no room to add the amount of luxury boxes that would be needed by an NFL franchise. Estimates have been made that $150 million dollars of renovations would need to be made in order to get an NFL franchise to even take the facility seriously.
Although arena football teams, the AAF, and many others have tried to make the venue work, no one has been able to crack the secret formula to help make the Alamodome successful. Currently the only full time tenants are the UTSA Roadrunners of the NCAA, and the various rotations of concerts, and other conventions.
In the end it looks like no NFL team will ever land at the Alamodome, aside from perhaps another preseason game if the NFL wants to do more market studies of the area. The city of San Antonio did everything right. They built a modern for the time venue, invested and promoted to try to lure a team, but were just truly unlucky in trying to lure a franchise to the city. In the end the venue is successful as a concert space, conventions space, and college football stadium, but will never get its shot as a permanent host of an NFL franchise.

San Antonio native here. I love this stadium with all my heart. I’ve seen everything there. I’ve seen monster jam, Metallica, college games. I even saw my little brother graduate there just a couple months ago. The stadium is indeed old as hell but god damn does it have a lot of history!

If San Antonio was to get a team, without a doubt they’d probably only play at the Alamodome for two or three years while a “billion dollar stadium” is constructed. Which is actually a shame, because if you look at how they renovate stadiums in Europe (especially the ones in England) it’s proof that it actually is possible to bring an old stadium up to modern standards.

You are absolutely spot on with this. Unfortunately the Alamodome will probably never get the chance to host a permanent team, although it could be fun to see something like the NFL Combine here.

I think what needs to happen is a massive renovation to the alamodome it probably might be adding more glass to the stadium like what if they get rid of the roof and Maybe add a glass roof now I highly say that will not happen but I am just like what if

I think a lot of the NFL and college stadiums should learn from Dolphins stadium renovation. Sometimes building a new stadium it's not the answer. Unless they are going to build something like the Atlanta stadium lol

@@akunamatatalopez3963 Yes, but greedy owners want "amenities" like gold-plated toilet seats, etc. Renovations? The Red Sox spent millions renovating Fenway Park, the oldest stadium in the world. The Alamodome reminds of the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis or the GA Dome in Atlanta, where the stadiums were built for only a short lived period of time due to the fact they were built a decade before today’s modern retractable roof stadiums became the standard. The Alamodome was so outdated that the Buffalo Bills had threaten to move to Austin and build a new stadium there.

When Red McCombs a very rich San Antonio car dealership owner , bought the Minnesota Vikings there were rumors he would try to bring the team here. Years after he sold them he revealed he had a window to bring them but when he approached our then mayor he refused any type of financial or civic support as he wasn't a sports fan. The 80% of the city supports the Cowboys going back many generations for some.

I'm being realistic when I say the only way San Antonio will get an NFL team is if we team up with Austin and have a stadium in the San Marcos area. While the stadium is under construction the two cities can rotate home games between the Alamodome and DKR.
@ruffo7673
@ruffo7673 2 года назад
Even if we got an NFL team, the Alamodome would only see the light of day for a season or two while the trillion dollar Frost Bank or Valero Stadium is being built downtown ,at which point the Alamodome would either fall victim to glorious Bexar County development (being torn down for other uses), or, face a ✨lengthy✨ refurbishment project that will cost the very generous San Antonio tax payer a billion or so dollars. Now if I was in charge of making that decision, I would go with tearing the thing down. Who knows, maybe the new stadium would be called the Frost Bank or Valero Alamodome in memorial, I doubt it, but it would be nice. Either way, I would love it if the Titans moved the franchise down to The Alamo City and revert to their old “Oilers” name. Seems fitted for the area.

It’s surprising that the video overlooks that Raiders owner Mark Davis in the middle 2010s was seriously considering moving the team to San Antonio. Problems with the Alamodome‘s playing surface were the reason Davis failed to take moving the Raiders to San Antonio beyond the experimental stage. If a team has to relocate in the future, San Antonio or Austin are still likely possibilities.

Somewhat out of market, but nonetheless, the University of Texas football team may helped to keep the NFL away. I remember a joke around there is that Austin didn't need a pro team since they have UT football (de facto pro team since how big UT football is there and the huge budget they have... not saying they paid players to come improperly). San Antonio is 80 miles away, so it's not a long trip. (Besides, a 200 pump Buc-ees is along the way...). Besides, I don't think Jerra wants anyone in SA...

I think if the NFL were to expand to 34 teams St Louis and San Antonio would be the most logical choices. Because both cities already have stadiums the teams could play at. I know both are old and would only serve like 3-5 years but in other cities they would have to build a stadium before play could begin.
