Imagine baseball umpires just standing behind homeplate all afternoon long wearing a mask and chest padding when its 105 degrees. They'll have a heart attack.
@@dariog36th they already do for the local Double A team. Unless you’re fancy enough to get a suite, it’s a nightmare to go to a game there. You’re just cooking until the sun goes down.
Jerry Jones would do what he can to prevent a San Antonio NFL team. San Antonio is a cowboys city and Jerry won’t allow the loss of that market share. The best chance we had was the saints moving to San Antonio after Katrina.
If the UFL team gets more popular then the stadium will have a solid tenant. The city is attached to the stadium and they have a variety of events there. The stadium will be fine
Went to the Brahmas game last weekend and it was probably about 30-40% full. I can tell the people here really do want to get behind the team though, the fans were going nuts at that last game against the Stallions.
The Alamodome is going to be around as long as there's events going on and no NFL team, UTSA football needs a place to play unless they build an on-campus stadium, the only way the Alamodome goes is if an NFL team comes to San Antonio via expansion or relocation as the Alamodome is used as a temporary venue until a new stadium is built, in ending, the Ginger loves to put an overemphasis on natural light.
if that happens i suspect that the new stadium built will be in northern New Bronfeles or southern San Marcos will transit links to Austin and San Antonio
UTSA is in a weird area of town right by 1604 with constant construction and yea nevermind the downtown campus so yes having the games at the Dome is the best option. Plus they are improving and moving to the Big 12. Yea this whole natural light thing is silly especially in Texas.
No it’s garbage. I have yet to hear another local sing it praises. UTSA should have bought land by La Cantera when there was still land to develop and put up a 30,000 seat stadium like Texas State.
@@mosescuh3907 that “garbage” stadium has generated almost 4 billion in economic impact for San Antonia since it opened.. They’ve definately gotten their money’s worth out of that place.
@@nochey78 still stand by my statement. A cavernous, no character relic that didn’t serve its intended purpose. Minimal parking for any event that does sell out. That article I believe you’re referring to also mentions that from 2002-2023 it didn’t turn a profit. Coincidentally only turn a slight profit in 2023 when the Spurs had their one off home game there.
Some people said this about Houston between the time the Oilers left and the moment the Texans were granted... Austin/San Antonio are growing fast and slowly into each other. If the NFL wants a team in South/South Central Texas, they'll MAKE it happen. (Just ask St. Louis)
Houston and St Louis both had previous NFL teams. You’re proving the point with your comment. The point being the NFL,gives preference to teams who previously had NFL teams and lost them. Wake up. It’s very obvious.
San Antonio native here, the Alamodome is doing fine, at least it’s not an eyesore or ugly and it’s been pretty much well kept over the years and I believe has had 3 renovations in the 30 years since its inception. I remember when it hosted the Saints games when Katrina happened, heck I worked those games and it was packed and well received. SA was really hoping to finally get a team but they decided to return to Houston instead. Having attended last years WWE Royal Rumble it was very exciting and was packed. Again it still looks good and honestly there’s not a bad seat in the dome. It’s a good sign that the NCAA still sees the Alamodome as a worthy host of the Final Four and believe me people show up from all over the US.
9:32 DCI Southwestern Championships is a July fixture at the Alamodome, drawing much of its crowd from the ranks of Texas high school bands prepping for the coming fall. Drum corps draws a passionate base, but flies under the radar of the public at large. The high school bands also hold their state championships here in November.
Unlike Camping World Stadium which nobody wants to play at, the Alamodome has steady tenants. Plus it's getting the final four next year and all the other non sporting events it hosts. It's a staple of the city. It'll still be around in 15 years at least.
I know this video was mainly about the stadium but to me this is the perfect spot for the Final Four. I live in SA and have seen it. Every team gets a huge hotel down town and some times it across the street from their rivals which makes a lot of banter between teams leaving the hotels. The river walk is an awesome atmosphere. Every team picks a restaurant and the team fans go there. There are a lot of hotels in the area that people can just walk to the stadium. The stadium gets upgrades every Final Four. It kind of sucks we never got a NFL team but it's still nice to have here in SA.
Renovations!? I was at the Alamo Bowl last year and it’s fine. It’s an event center. To be charged extra for “luxury” aesthetics is ridiculous. The energy and atmosphere of the people in attendance is what makes it memorable.
From an out-of-towner, attended high school kick-off game last fall. The Alamodome seemed clean and well maintained. Not a huge mega stadium but fine for San Antonio. Better than outside! Parking and access a bit challenging.
It’s sad they built the Alamodome in hopes of getting a NFL team but it never happened. Now it’s dated, and would need an expensive renovation. Frost bank center is in the worst ghetto part of San Antonio it’s pretty rough and scary idk what they were thinking building their arena there.
There's a big difference between "updating" and "renovations" If the stadium still works, don't fix it. I'll guarantee you that, if those cheapskate owners were forced to pay for everything, they would do a better job of maintenance, like the Dodgers.
call me crazy, but I watched a Spurs game at the Alamodome back in the 90s and thought it was awesome... what other arena at the time had hoops on the other side that you could shoot on during the game? Good memories.
My first ever NBA game was at the Alamodome. I think I was 8 at the time. It was when Rodman was with the team and Del Harris was the coach. It was a larger than life experience. I do remember using binoculars lol!
@@malcorub forgive me I was wrong. Thanks for correcting me. I was probably mixing Vinny Del Negro who was playing for the Spurs at the time and Del Harris lol. The crowd would go crazy when Del Negro hit threes! Good times.
I live in Cincinnati, i have visited San Antonio..the city has the potential to have an NFL franchise...this city would grow more rapidly...not to mention the revenue would be endless...think about it...restaurants and hotels would ream the benefits through the roof.
The Alamodome it paid for. No Debt Service at all. A new stadium built on I35 will have to involve Austin/Travis county And other than football...what good what this new place do?
I’m a Texas state fan but I Will admit the utsa games at the Alamodome have a solid atmosphere. True the upper deck is usually closed off but the stadium is certainly not empty
They need to take inspiration from Indy Colts stadium, they both have a barn style design. They should install giant glass windows on either side to let natural light in, paint those awful corner sections with some color instead of the dreary concrete look. And improve the seats and jumbotron.
ALAMO Dome is a beautiful stadium! I believe it will be fine ! As for as natural light who cares it looks great and if they want to the city of San Antonio could put in some windows it can be done! We've been to the moon and back we have the technology we can get it done ! The tenants will come NFL will come in expansion NFL loves Texas ! 27 Million people live in Texas ! Keep it a dome just renovate translucent roof possible! Do we always have to build new always No we don't ! !! It's like your own house if it's in a great location just upgrade like you would your own kitchen or bathroom!! Do they get rid of The White house No they just remodel every new administration !!! The stadium was built in 1993 THAT'S fairly new look at Buckingham palce it looks grand so does Alamo dome it looks unique like no other and it seats 70,000 plus for football plenty large enough just add more luxury suites spruce up the parking area for tailgating !!! We can't just build these new stadiums every 20 year old stadiums that is ridiculous !!! Just remodel and be Happy!!!! Thank you Ginger great channel!
Ex NBA fan here. I have a love/hate relationship with the Spurs now that I've grown up. I went to my first Spurs game was probably about 8 yrs old & that was at the Hemisphere Arena in the late 80's & early 90's. The Spurs hated that arena, it was kinda small & the seating was awkwardly flat which gave it visibility issues. I do remember the big fuss about building the Alamodome to possibly bring in an NFL team cause the Cowboys were f'n huge & SA wanted to cash in on that. The city and surrounding areas voted on whether to build the damn thing but the adults were not happy about having to raise taxes to get the thing built. It was built, no NFL team took the bait so they moved the Spurs there & they hated it. It was too big & the seats were too steep & it wasn't intimate enough. And the Spurs were talking shit about leaving if they didn't get what they want. So they build what is now called the Frost Bank Center just for the Spurs & now, guess what, the Spurs don't like it. Notice a theme here? And yes, the Frost Bank Center is in a bad part of town, it's more of an industrial area & run down cause crime while the Alamodome is not that much nicer of a spot but at least there are hotels in the area. SATX, just keep having random events at the Alamodome & just market it as a "Mega Event Center"
Thank you Jerry Jones for not letting San Antonio having an NFL team because of a split market 3 ways. Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. JJ would lose money and market share.
It works for the city. Nfl level? No. Works a college stadium. Its more of a part of convention center. Big room to host events. Good spot near hotels and riverwalk. Not everything needs to be in a billion dollar luxury stadium
I think once Jerry Jones passes away there will be a push to get an NFL team in San Antonio-Austin. The Alamodome will be used as a temporary stadium for the new team while a new stadium is built
Could SA use this to lure an MLB expansion team until they can build a baseball stadium, similar to the Rockies in Mile High Stadium? Is a baseball retrofit plausible with a layout like the Marlins' Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Landshark/Sun Life or the Twins' Metrodome?
They would be better off playing at Nelson Wolff Stadium, the minor league stadium, until they built a new baseball stadium. They’d waste too much money trying to revamp the Alamodome for baseball, because it’s too narrow. Mile High was built from the start to accommodate both, since it had a unique, moveable grandstand.
@@gregsells8549 Hi Greg. Yes, I know, but it had a ridiculously short right field in that configuration. I doubt MLB would allow that for a regular season game. I’d think that it would be cheaper to add seating to Wolff Stadium and play there for 2 years than to reconfigure the Alamodome.
The Chicago White Sox may be looking for a new home. Offer the stadium to them with the promise that it will be renovated with a retractable roof and new seating configuration. They already wear black, white and silver like the Spurs.
Having been to every d1 stadium in the state of Texas, every original big12 school, and the rose bowl and USC, gotta say the Alamo dome is top 5, maybe top 3 on that list Games I've been to there in last few years have been awesome-- Lowe and upper decks nearly full and not having natural light has a really cool effect for a college venue Close to the river walk, totally unique feel for college venue If I'm not mistaken, UTSA made an agreement to sell a portion of land just across from the Alamo dome that they owned for the new spurs venue to extend their lease there Alamo dome will be their home stadium until the city can get an NFL franchise San Antonio deserves an NFL team, but will not get it until Jerry Jones either passes or sells the cowboys-- he has closed every attempt that they have made Side note, I've never understood why the Texans do not do some preseason games/mini camp items in San Antonio. Only 3 hrs from Houston, and Houston has just given the the territory over to the cowboys....if they did some summer training there, I think San Antonio could add to the base of the Houston market and steal away from the cowboys strangle hold, make a lot more sense that when the Texans were practicing in west Virginia....
Why would the Chiefs relocate? That is just ridiculous... They are the super bowl champions and support a strong fan base... Who buy tickets... That is a most ridiculous statement.
The State Basketball tournaments are held here for boys and girls, UTSA really has nowhere else to play football games here, it hosts many graduations for local public schools and UTSA , plus the Alamo Bowl and the Brahmas. It's not great, but it's serviceable, and it honestly has to be for now.
I personally believe the Alamodome will be around till about 2035. If the city was serious they would be saving money now and invest in a replacement stadium in about a decade. No amount of renovation will fix the dome to NFL standards
San Antonio will only have NBA Spurs. San Antonio is considered by many a "Po' Town." A town mostly catered to poor people. Just look at the type of restaurants and other businesses in the area. Not trying to put San Antonio down, but the NFL never really looked at San Antonio as one of its markets. Remember, the Alamo Dome opened the same year Charlotte and Jacksonville were awarded NFL teams.
Football is life in Texas, but especially in south Texas. I could see San Antonio getting an NFL team before any other pro team. I also predict Austin getting an MLB stadium before any other sports team.
@@dabraverman2534 Flew in from Atlanta was for my Son's Birthday it was amazing next morning I blew my nose and there was soot from the pyros lol we really hope they come back to North America next summer
the city ask for a tax to have the Alamodome built for the Spurs. we all voted yes for a tax was passed. Years later the Spurs ask for another building and another tax was passed. Now they want to build another Spurs building. Wow
UTSA use it for football. There concert there ever years Billy Joel and Sting will bring in several millions NCAA finals ne😂xt year. Alamo Bowl every year. People who talk about getting rid of it doesn't know how much money is brought in by the Alamodome.
You have no idea what you are talking about. I am guessing you have not been to a UTSA game...the crowd is great for Group of 5. With it being fully enclosed the sound is captured so sounds so much louder. Why would you worried about natural light. Making translucent pannels will just drive up the AC cost. The concorses do have natural light.
The next city to get a MLB, NFL, NBA Franchise will be Austin. For those of you who have not been up to Austin recently Omg! Skyscrapers galore and the money to boot.
Native San Antonian here. Excellent video! Let’s all admit that the Alamodome is a dump. It’s always been a dump. It was built by the City of San Antonio for $183M and finished in 1993. The indoor professional football stadium was built without the input of a professional team tenant. As a result, it lacks almost every feature that an NFL team requires. It lacks any modern technology. It is leaky and broken down. It costs the City of SA millions to maintain each year. It has been a net loss leader and an albatross from the beginning. It lacks enough premium features (such as premium suites) for a professional sports organization. The City has shoe horned other sports games, conventions, graduations and anything else that might fit 72,000 people. As a venue, the building lacks the facilities, comforts and conveniences of dedicated sports arenas, convention halls or concert amphitheaters. On the positive side, does have fairly reliable air-conditioning, a must in South Texas. The Alamodome should be demolished and replaced by a new Spurs Stadium, in my opinion.
They are two very different size venues. The Alamodome can hold 60-70 thousand people. A basketball arena holds about 18-20. A city the size of San Antonio needs venues of both sizes for various event.
@@mattescobedo3612 I hope not for San Antonio's sake. It seems like it is a rule that NBA stars (Shaq, LeBron, Malone, Wilt, etc.) have to play for LA.
