Yeah and I believe Johnny cash would know that tho but the interview he would be doing if was still with us all would be something else god rest both JR Cash and the later ones of the group !
NEVER FORGOT that Johnny gave them their break into show business, more importantly NEVER FORGOT where they came from. Always gave BACK to their community!!!
Very true, they gave credit where credit is due. The older singers always do unlike some new ones. The classic singers seem to remember how rough life was and did stuff to help their home towns not turn their backs on them. No matter how famous they are they never forgotten their roots. I listen to them with the Oakridge boys and Alabama every night on my Kindle as I sleep, never gets old.👍😊
When did Harold die of the Statler brothers? I never ever heard he passed away or is this thing pulling my chain it said rest in peace Harold Reed 10 months ago he's been gone that long and I never even heard about it good grief my deepest sympathy to his wife and family Lord in heaven
I’ve loved the Statler brothers since I was n the 11 th grade n high school. I’m now 83 years of age and their music has aged with me and its better than ever. May God bless you singers with a front row seat in His Heavenly Choir❤️❤️🙏🙏
@@thelastjohnwayne Johnny Cash is the Man Solely responsible for the Statler Brothers getting their start in Country Music. He hired them to open up for him beginning with their very first Show in Canton, Ohio in March of 1964. Within just a short couple years, they were recording songs, and making records, and slowly getting seen, and heard. They stayed with John for the next eight & half years before they finally realized that the time had come for them to get out on their own, and all throughout their 38 year Career, they always performed Sold Out Shows, and during all of their years, they only had 2 people leave the Group. Joe McDormand was their first Lead Singer from 1955, until 1960, when Harold's younger Brother Don stepped up to the Microphone to take over for Joe, and then Jimmy Fortune was selected by Lew Dewitt to take over for Lew as the Tenor Singer when Lew took a 6 month leave for Medical Reasons, and at the end of the 6 months, Lew came back, but realized within a week, that he could no longer keep up with the Statler's Rigorous Touring Schedule, and retired, thus putting Jimmy Fortune in permanently as the Statler's Tenor Singer. Lew was with the Statlers for 18 years, and Jimmy was with them for almost 21 years. Jimmy is now enjoying a very busy Solo Career in Music while Don, and Phil are enjoying retirement. Harold passed from Kidney Disease in April of 2020.
I love the music of the Statler Brothers, but I love even more the fact that they had grateful hearts. They made no secret of their debt and gratitude to Johnny Cash.
Eight months after they opened for the first time, I saw them for the firs time, November 14, 1964. My wife and I went to see Johnny Cash but all we talked about all the way home was how much we enjoyed the Statler Brothers. Been a fan ever since.
Was never a fan of groups, didn't like the Beatles, didn't like the Stones, there were many that I didn't like(didn't dislike them, just wouldn't buy their records) but the Statler brothers were special, they harmonized so well that they sounded like just one person with a lot of talent, Now I believe that Talent like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think my wife was the most beautiful women to ever take a breath.....and the Statler brothers were the best of all time!....and I think I am right on both counts, hell I know I am right🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here we are, the summer of 2024. There are only 2 members of the original Statler Brother still alive. As the second edition of the Statler brothers, there are 3 members still alive.
Groups like the Statler Brothers and George Stait and other true country artists don’t come by very often. I could listen to them every day and not get tired of them.

I was very fortunate to be in the audience while they were taping this. I miss country music like it was. Not taking anything away from Jimmy Fortune but I grew up listening to the late Lew Dewitt and am partial to him.
Lew had a very unique tenor voice, as does Jimmy. Very different from each other, and both very unique. When Lew realized he could not continue to be part of the group, he chose Jimmy as his replacement, and what a perfect choice! Jimmy still performs solo and he’s awesome!!!!
It started March of sixty-four Many years ago We were hired by Johnny Cash To open up his show Four boys, a worn out Cadillac With a road map on the dash For the next eight and one half years We got paid by Cash He took us down to Nashville To Columbia studio Not knowing where we came from They told us where to go But Johnny said, "I like 'em Don't you give them no trash" You see, we were Johnny's little boys And we got paid by Cash We were there when June became Johnny's lovin' bride And we sang to him that mornin' Our buddy Luther died And we were there when the son was born That filled them both with pride And we were there when John remembered God was on his side We watched him on the concert stage We watched him write his songs And saw the things we had to do And the things that could go wrong And if we had to start again We'd do it in a flash 'Cause we learned more than we earned When we got paid by Cash Then came the time when our career Demanded that we go And through some tears we all shook hands That last and final show All those years we never had A contract or a clash Whatever we may be today We owe it all to Cash We were there when June became Johnny's lovin' bride, And we sang to him that mornin' Our buddy Luther died And we were there when the son was born That filled them both with pride And we were there when John remembered God was on his side Now John will tell you there were years When times were good and bad But we can tell you they were some Of the best we ever had Carl Perkins and the Carters And the Tennessee Three We were one big happy family And would have done it all for free Don don, don don Don don, don don
4-24-20. Harold was the best natured star, never haughty. It's terrible that he died from kidney failure, when years ago he offered a kidney to George Younce. If I remember correctly, that's when Harold's problem was discovered. You youngins are hearing history, 4 part harmony and these are just the greatest guys. See you later bass man
Shannon...Thanks for mentioning that. I too thought it was extremely ironic that the first call George got was from Harold offering one of his kidneys, and then that is what perpetuated his death. RIP Harold, you were truly a gift to all music lovers.
November 13, 1977 Johnny performed at the LSU Assembly Center in Baton Rouge. My mama, a single mother working two jobs, somehow managed to get tickets to take me to that. This was back when these boys were still touring with Johnny. You know, I hardly remember anything about Johnny's performance that night, but forty-odd years later, I still remember seeing The Statler Brothers perform. As far as I was and still am concerned, they stole the show.
simply amazing. you don't even even have to be a fan of classic country to love this, you just have to appreciate true talent. they don't make guys like this these days. God bless the Statler Brothers. goodnight:)
I saw Johnny Cash and the Statler Brothers at the little rural Princeton County Fair in 1965. I was 15 and with my elderly aunts. It cost $2.25 to get in. I thought that was way too much money to see some singers. Little did I know that I was about to see a concert of a lifetime for the paltry sum of $2.25. The Statlers were fantastic. I knew they were bound for stardom. Johnny was drunk. I had never seen a drunk person but I knew he was drunk. I thought he was going to fall off the stage by the end of the program when he and June sang Ring of Fire. 😮 I am so glad he got his life together and married June. He too was a incredible entertainer and he is definitely a STAR ⭐️

First, Lew DeWhitt, now Harold Reid.. Half of a truly classic group gone.. Jimmy Fortune is good, but he can never beat Lew.. and he is so loud, he stands out, not always in a good way. Rest in blessed pace, Lew, John, June, and HArold.. youll never be forgotten by many...
One thing I admire about the true legends, the Statler's and Doll , among others they never forget about where they came from or how they got started and gave credit to the people that helped them.
Lee Brown Luther Perkins (no relation to Carl) was Johnny’s lead guitar player. He was a heavy smoker and it’s believed he fell asleep with a lit cigarette and burned to death, best I remember it was the early 70’s. At the end of the song the Statlers sing “Dow Dow Dow”, that was Luther’s guitar line in Ring of Fire in fact any early Cash song, the words may have been Johnnys but the melody was Luthers👍
Lucky as I can be. In September of '63, the Johnny Cash show played Patio Gardens, the music and dance venue at Lagoon Amusement park north of Salt Lake City for the first time. I met them each year. Same for everyone else that had been a part of the Johnny Cash Shows.
Were are great groups like this today thank you so much Johnny cash for giving us the statler brothers so glad you knew great talent when you saw it rip
First Concert I saw was these original Guys in the 70s in Garrett Coliseum. Still the best one I recall. Have been in the TNN studio at Opryland Ralph Emory with Ray Stevens. Once the show was done Ray said he didn’t have no place to be so we got a free 2+ hour concert. Great memories.
Harold Reed great singer,we miss him. The Lord needed another singer in heaven and now he is in heaven singing still. He is with his family who went before him.
My mother went to one of the last concerts the Statler Bros did, in Salem VA near their hometown of Staunton VA . It was the same weekend that my precious twins were born. I won't ever forget that time, and we named 1 of them Elizabeth...👍
I was fortunate enough to live in Nashville and went to the taping of this show. Two great nights of entertainment at the New Opry House at Opryland. Great memories.
Love the Statler Brothers. Back where I come from. I babysat for Lew Dewitt and Harold Reid's children when they were little and I was young. Love their harmony. Love these "Guys from the Valley" in Virginia. RIP Harold.
Great clip - the Stater's were terrific entertainers and for quite awhile the best show in the USA period. Marshall Grant leaving JR to manage the Statler's must have been something else. How 2 viewers could give this a thumbs down is ridiculous!
Outstanding. I've been a Statler Brothers fan since they started wwith Johnny Cash, & I have stacks of their records, but amazingly, I've never heard this number before.. These guys make up the best the best country vocal group in the world, bar none.
