I am half way through Part 1 of The Making of Exile and am restraining myself from watching it all at once. Like Keith's book, Life, it's a precious thing, so just a little taste at a time ... Seriously, it's fantastic. Steve's docs are all great. Anyway, I have sent Steve a donation, partly to enable me to watch Part 2 when it comes out and partly (mainly) because showing appreciation is long overdue. So there will be more donations from me too. PS: I was in Villefranche in 1999 and decided to look for Nellcote. All the locals went "Huh? Don't know what you're talking about" so I went walking. Up a road, at the top of a hill on the eastern side of Villefranche, I stopped and said I don't know where it is. Someone said "turn around". I was standing right in front of that small black sign, "Nellcote", affixed to the front railings.

Dude… I haven’t watched it yet. I wanted to set aside time for the doc as a whole . I immediately began consuming it as soon as you released it and stopped; I realized that I’ve got to experience this through the hifi and big-screen. So thankful for your diligence and hard work. You’re the best Flipside. You don’t know how many nights I’ve spent in pain and unable to sleep from illness. I have no one to discuss music like this; I grew up going to record stores, then working in one cause I never left. I probably didn’t give them a choice-they had to give me a job. As my kiwi Aunt used to to say when she had high praise “ I can appreciate that, I can, I can”Donated and done!

It was some time since I saw it last but I remember the stolen guitars and homesick band members from it. That doc made great moving use of photos. In terms of content I agree. I always thought the band’s crucial stint in LA finishing the record was under-explored, given the mystique of Nellcote. The Apple TV doc 1971 seems to give it more attention from what I have seen so far (haven’t finished it yet). Have you seen it?

2021. It’s an 8 part series and the Stones feature in 2 I think. Well worth the watch for its mix of music and social issues.

Good morning fellow fans 😄I wanted to let everyone know about the new Bob Marley movie out One Love. As you know Keef was friends with Marley and collaborated with him. Some of the movie is ovedramatized but definitely worth seeing. It covers some historical events also connected with the Stones. 🎹🎶🎵🎼

Almost everybody consider Exile their masterpiece. Well, it's really an outstanding album, but I think it's their third great one. I consider Stick Fingers and Let it Bleed better albums. Remember that Exile is a double album, so it's unfair to compare it with simple ones. But ok I love Exile and listen to it frequently. Greegings from Brazil, guys!

Yes Mick is very much office hours and wants to know what he is doing the next day. He hated Nellcote' and all the hangers on.. They loved Olympic studios. Because it had the working professional environment.

I think the mixing/mastering of the record should be entirely redone (like for El Mocambo). Exile sounds like a demo.

Interesting. I'd be curious to hear a remix. Would be blasphemous to most fans though.

I bought my first vinyl edition of EoMS in 1982. Two CD's and one digital download later I am still p***ed at that stupid volume drop in Sweet Virginia every time I hear it. So yeah, I'm all for a remix.

I really shouldn't post a comment here, but when I saw the title, my feelings about this mess of an album proved too strong for me to resist. I am old enough to have bought the album when it was first released. But even then I had a low opinion of it. Time has not improved it. "Exile on Main Street" is probably the most over-rated album put out by any person(s) in the history of recorded music. I just can't understand why it has been rated the top of The Rolling Stone's list. First, it's a 2-record set... something that few artists have ever been able to get away with (even The Beatles' White Album would have been better if it had been put out as a single LP). Second, and while The Rolling Stones' albums previously always had a bit of wallish-of-sound imparted to them, the potentially great songs on EOMS were recorded with so much distortion that I can no longer listen to them ("Torn And Frayed" for example). Third, there is too much filler (practically the whole of side 4, though "All Down The Line" is OK.) I have made, in fact, my own single disc version of EOMS... though, again, I find it hard to listen to because of the over-and-above-board distortion. (I also DECREASED, with the help of Audacity, the tempo of "Rip This Joint", a track I had never liked until I slowed it down... though, unfortunately, even Audacity can't help me reduce its static.)

Yes I remember you from another post. Changing the speed of Rip This Joint left me speechless then as it does now reading it again.

I still don’t think it’s a very good record. Certainly not a “masterpiece”& not even their best. It was hated when it came out& they were right. Let it Bleed was their masterpiece & they left Honky Tonk Women off of it. That was their peak
@HangFireStonesPodcast

Pet Sounds was also hated when it first came out. Why do critics decide everything?
@tooth2k

@@HangFireStonesPodcast I’m not talking about critics. Kids. People. Everybody. Stones fans were all disappointed by Exile. It’s just a fact.

@@tooth2k So then it's not a masterpiece because people 50 years ago hated it?
