Isiah Thomas was an amazing player back in the day, but unfortunately...being a great player doesn't mean you'll be a great general manager. Here is the full story of how Isiah Thomas ruined the New York Knicks.

Simon Peter Martin that trade was dumb but at that time they switch locations to Brookyln and got a new arena, they needed to bring in guys that would bring in some fans so they got KG, Pierce, Joe Johnson, Deron Williams which made them a playoff team for about 2 years and made them some fans and made some money, but after that it did set them back until this year where the Nets got Dlo,Okafor,Dinwiddie, Jarret Allen young guys to add with Rondae Hollis Jefferson, Nik Statukas, Caris Levert, that Billy with Billy was dumb and smart at the same time

Hindsight was a funny thing as Scott Layden was the one who dealt the first blow to the Knicks which led to him getting fired and replaced by Isiah Thomas. Not defending Isiah, but Scott Layden (his predecessor) wasn't much better. He gave 30 year old Allan Houston a 6 yr/$100M contract, which was so bad it literally created the amnesty clause. He also traded Marcus Camby and a freshly drafted Nene to the Nuggets for Antonio McDyess, who ended up playing only 18 games for the Knicks due to injury before being sent off to Phoenix in the Marbury deal. Not to mention his fetish for acquiring ex-Jazz players who had terrible contracts (see: Howard Eisley and Shandon Anderson)

Well I came back to this video remembering people arguing about if Isiah or Phil were worse as Knicks GM, and guys like Billy King & Scott Laydon. But on RealGM an article popped up about 'The Stepian Rule', which I had previously no knowledge of, and although he was the owner, Ted Stepian might just be the worst sports executive I've ever seen. "In a span of less than five months, Stepien had shipped away the team’s first round picks in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 and to make matters worse, shortly before he had control of the team they traded their 1982 first to the Lakers which eventually became the No. 1 pick and James Worthy." Dude fucked it up so badly that when the new owner took over a couple years later, the NBA just gave them first rounders back for free so the team didn't collapse completely. But still, the players they got played a combined 170 games or something, then the players who were chosen with the traded picks wound up being: Derek Harper (1983), Sam Perkins (1984), Detlef Schrempf (1985) and Roy Tarpley (1986). SMH that's BAAAAAAD.

Isiah was drafting really well. He is not even top 10 worst gm ever. But because he worked for the knicks franchise every bad thing gets overblown like crazy. The players that Zeke signed or drafted had much better careers after they left knicks: David Lee is a champion Zach Randolph might get his jersey retired in Memphis Crawford still in the league as a servicable scorer Nate Robinson had great years in boston and chicago which proves once again that at least zeke had a great eye for the talent

we all know isaiah was a scapegoat, the knicks were handcuffed by shiznit contracts way before i.t. came on board, the allan houston contract was just the tip of the iceberg, they've continued to suck way after i.t. got fired so obviously it is ownership

Do one about Phil Jackson's Tenure with the Knicks. He set us back a couple years again... The Noah signing, Derek Fisher, trading chandler, JR, Shump, and Young Timmy Jr for peanuts... It was horrible...

Isiah was really bad but he's not even close to the worse. He drafted the likes of David Lee, Damon Stoudamire and Tracy McGrady. Scott Layden was worse on the Knicks funny how no one brings that up. But as a person he's trash.

Honestly I think all of IT's bad decisions came as a result of the Stephon Marbury trade bungle. A trade that would've worked out under most situations, but alas, it was Stephon Marbury. The fallout from this probably threw off any game he had as a GM especially since this was one of his very first big moves. I think IT's next moves (signing James and Brown) represented a panicked effort to try and make a 360 degree turn from the Stephon Marbury trade in hopes that veteran leadership combined with a completely nontraditional way of measuring player success (as in Jerome James) was a better formula for success (since Stephon Marbury, under traditional metrics, failed spectacularly, but only for that specific instance). Unfortunately, instead of finding success, IT kept trying to make extreme pivots to atone for his mistakes, which only led to more mistakes that needed atoning for.

He's basically a medicine that seem to help you get better at first, but then it made the illness worsen after a while. This sums up the Knicks during that time, the first year with him was promising as he helped got them to the playoffs (though as a last seed) and were leading the division for a while in 2005 but then...they died.

Phil Jackson at least tried to right the ship. The Knicks got better in each of his last 2 seasons. It was Steve Mills who ruined the triangle offense and Carmelo Anthony’s will to adapt to the triangle offense. Steve Mills was part of the organization from 2001 to 2009 and worst of all, it was Steve Mills who recommended that we bring Isiah Thomas to the big apple. Marbury was only good for a year with us and even then, it was just satisfactory. He didn’t lead us to a winning record and we were swept by the Nets in the opening round of the playoffs and since then, Marbury was terrible.

theres 10 clear draft mistakes mj has made...1. kwame brown enough said 2. adam morrison 3. jared jefferies 4. bismak biyombo 5. michael kidd gildchrist 6. cody zeller 7. noah vonlah 8. frank kamentzky 9. 10. malik monk..some of these players weren't bad but when you draft them in the lottery mostly top 11 above so many better nba ready clear players its a joke ...then there was the trading signing firesale of the 2010 playoff roster that saw mj fire larry brown who coached at his alma matter N. carolina and thee team then that lost 5 starters in tyson chandler boris diaw stephan jackson gerald wallace and raymond felton all solid vets 3 of whom won nba titles as starters in chandler, diaw and jackson 1 of whom won an ncaa title as a starter for mj's fellow tar heels in charlotte ironcially 5 years prior in felton and the last being an all star in wallace and who could forget trading away young 20 ppg. future 4 time all star richard hamilton for 1 and a half years of older jerry stackhouse and finally signing tyrus thomas to an insane deal... trading for a washed up ben gordon and corey maggette with huge contacts also is on his resume

Here's a little information, Isiah was supposed take over the Detroit Pistons after retiring in 1994 however had a falling out with then owner William Davidson, that job would end up going to Joe Dumars 6 years later who would deliver us another NBA title in 2004. I seen an article that broke down draft picks and ranked Isiah Thomas as one of the better ones. If Isiah just committed to a full rebuild, no shortcuts, loaded up on draft picks and built the team that way, things likely would have been different. Instead just had an infatuation with big names, untapped potential which is fine if you're taking a no risk flyer on a player, not giving up unprotected draft picks.

Good video. But there are a few things worth mentioning: Isiah Thomas ALWAYS wanted to coach the Knicks and underminded Larry Brown the whole time. Nobody, I mean nobody had Renaldo Balkman on their draft board! I still remember Jay Bilas commenting how poor a draft decision this was when his name was called. Even after Isiah was fired he still had Dolan's ear as a consultant. This just goes to show you what kind of owner Dolan is. After all this, can you point to one time when Isiah took any real responsibility for his actions or the state of the Knicks?
