The Story of Lord Voldemort: Tom Riddle Origins Explained (Re-Upload July, 2017)

The whole harry potter series could had just been one book titled "bad parenting and its negative effects"

For someone so obsessed with immortality, Voldemort lived a pretty average lifespan, only 71 years old. Turns out that him meddling with fate is what caused most of his downfall.

The psychological aspect of creating love out from false pretenses and bringing a child that cannot feel love is HEAVY

So, Tom was simply sitting on his bed rearranging the letters in his name until he found a name that sounded scary

Good thing he went with "I am Lord Voldemort" instead of "Mr Atom. Dildo Lover"

I never realized that the reason Voldemort could never feel love was because he was conceived while his father was under a love potion.. And his mom was never really shown love by her family, so she felt like she had to use a potion to be loved. An example of "hurt people hurt people"

Loved the detail that Tom lost his good looks (with it, a good portion of his charm) with each horcrux. Dark magic always leaves a trace

Tom’s life is literally just him saying: “I’m built different”

One crucial information is the fact that two boys were born at the end of that July: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Voldemort likely chose Harry believing he was the boy the prophecy talked about because he already saw similarities between the two of them. Funnily enough, by killing Harry's parents he actually made Harry even more similar to him: both were half-bloods, both orphans, both raised in a hostile place with people who mistreated them etc.

He loved Hogwarts probably as much as Harry if not more. Because Harry had the Weasley home in his life. But Tom Riddle had no other place he could've ever lived. To him: Hogwarts and Magic was his life, identity, everything. He existed due to it, because His mother used magic to trap his father and then conceived him. And hence, Tom Riddle never loved a person ever. He only loved Magic and Hogwarts.

It just amaze me that a human imagination able to create a story as legendary as this.

A moment of silence for the people who haven't read harry potter

Merope Gaunt’s story seems so tragic. She came from a broken, abusive family, and tried to start a normal, happy family for herself, but wound up destroying that with her misguided use of a love potion. Her husband left her when she stopped using the love potion, and that same love potion made her son incapable of giving or receiving love. In spite of having a terrible father, she still used his name for her son’s middle name, because it was the customary thing to do.

It's actually not uncommon for sociopaths/psychopaths to collect trophies. Even those that become serial killers does so. So the fact Voldemort collected trophies even at a young age shouldn't be surprising. I doubt Voldemort was aware of it though, otherwise he might not collect trophies for his actions considering he wished to be different.

Fun fact: In Hogwarts Legacy, one of the characters in the Slytherin house that we encounter and later work with, named Ominus Gaunt is most like Voldemort great uncle. Or a sibling or cousin of Marvolo Gaunt.

Voldemort is one of my all-time favorite characters because of how interesting his backstory is. The fact that he could manipulate people with his charm and he could perform the most sadistic acts without regret makes him a fascinating villain.

I kinda feel sorry for Tom Riddle (Father). I mean apearently he never wanted to be in a relationship with voldemord's mother, she forced him, and when he got free he got killed by a son he didn't even had the fault of having

holy mother, it was his curse that no dark arts teacher could continue more than a year. damn.

They should make a movie about the entire backstory of Voldemort. Like from him being conceived to sometime after the night he kill Harry's parents. Maybe even show Snape's reaction to Lily's death of course by recycling the footage from Deathly Hallows Part 2. No one can replace Alan Rickman! They must keep it respectful if/when they do a movie about the full origin of Voldemort.

It's ironic that the Gaunts valued their pure blood status above all else, yet it was injecting some Muggle DNA into the family tree that resulted in one of the most powerful wizards of all time.

Callousness, lack of empathy, risk taking, manipulation and coercive control, thriving in highly controlled environment, learning the rules to know how to game them. All the characteristics of psychopath.

Voldemort backstory is by far the best and the most dark.

The theory I always had was Riddle already knew how to make a horcrux and did so the night he killed his father and used the family ring. I think he mainly talked to Slughorn to see what he thought about splitting the soul more than once.

I'm a very casual Potter fan but have been enjoying Hogwart's legacy and recently started exploring more through (excellent) content such as this. One standing joke I made watching the films was "who's this years Dark arts teacher going to be". Finding out there was a reason it kept happening made my day - thank you.

You know the worst part for Voldy is that if he had just lived a normal life he would have lived longer. He was so scared of dying so he did all this bs to stay alive and yet thats what ended up killing him. Ah I love irony.

There's debate in these comments whether Harry survived because he was was in posession of all three Hallows making him the Master of Death, or because he controlled the Elder Wand at that time, but I actually think it's neither of those two things (though they wouldn't have hurt him). Remember: the main factor and crucial point is that Harry had to meet death WILLINGLY, and WITHOUT RESISTANCE - much like how the 3rd Peverell brother met death as a friend and embraced him and went with him willingly. That meant that upon Voldemort hitting Harry with the killing curse, it was actually possible that EITHER soul inside of Harry (his own untarnished whole soul or the fragment of Voldemort's) could have been the one to die. Remember that while Harry is in limbo with Dumbledore, Dumbledore tells Harry he has a choice - he can choose to go back to Hogwarts and try to finish Voldemort off (this would mean that Voldemort's soul fragment is the one that's destroyed by Voldemort's killing curse, NOT Harry's soul) OR alternatively, Harry can choose to board a train and go "on" - meaning Harry can accept death and allow himself to die (which would mean Harry's soul is the one that's destroyed, and as Harry is a horcrux, presumably Voldemort's fragment would also be destroyed as Harry's body is vessel that would also destroyed). Both choices would have resulted in the destruction of fragment of Voldemort's soul inside Harry, but only one choice would allow Harry to come back and be alive. Harry would have had this choice in limbo regardless of what wand Voldemort used to kill him in the forest, and regardless of if he had possession of any of the Hallows. The only Hallow Dumbledore ever really meant Harry to have (minus the cloak which was rightfully his as a descendent of the 1st brother) was the Resurrection Stone, which is why Dumbledore concealed it in the snitch in such a way that Harry would only be able to access it when he really needed it - that is, the moment when he knew he had to sacrifice himself ("I am about to die"). Dumbledore knew Harry would need the encouragement and support from his loved ones in order to give him the strength to go willingly to die. The other benefit of Harry willing to give himself up was that his sacrifice was essentially the same as Lily's - Voldemort said that if Harry gave himself up he'd call off the battle, so by voluntarily going to die to save the wizards battling at the castle, Harry ended up putting the same protection on them that Lily put on him when she chose to die for him. That's why after Harry comes back from limbo, none of Voldemort's spells can hold on the crowd.

Moral of the story is ...never force to love anyone....you will end up with a baby like voldemort.

I've always wondered why Dumbledore didn't object when Tom said 'my mother couldn't have been magic or she wouldn't have died.' That seems out of character for Dumbledore not to correct him that everyone dies eventually.

I think Tom not only feared death the most, he was traumatised by it, thus why he became so obsessed with immortality. If his mother hadn't died, he would have somewhat of a family base to be supportive of him. Death was actually the beginning of his demise that's why he went to extreme lengths to fight it. Perhaps, if Harry didn't have the Dursleys (sure he was abused by them, but still), the Weasleys, Hermione, and, later on, Sirius, he might've had turned to the same path as Tom, taken their similarities into account. The true main difference between them is the support and guidance they received in moment of need and loneliness, which it's the base of human condition (also what a scumbag of a father he had, much like a lot of people, unfortunately). It's brilliant writing indeed.
