Makes sense because I've always read/heard Olokun was a woman, but I think thats because of the way we understand gender, not because of what their force actually is. Olokun is probably just the divine balance of both masc and fem energies.

I was going to name my baby Yemaya but he was a boy. We struggled with fertility with my second child after my husband had chemotherapy and I freaked about fish and one of the fish in my dream was blue and had a mermaid tale and she said "for my baby to have a baby she needs to clear her mind and drink the waters" ... I was pregnant that following week.

Lovely vid, my godfather is priest of yemoja for 73 yrs, he taught me that yemoja lives both on land and sea and she has only been called yemaya for 400yrs and in african some houses burn red candlez for her due to the symbolism of the placenta, and she can come in the form of a bat which is the animal that traveled at night to follow the slave ships and a also as a crocodile. Efun are sacred to her because its made out of fish fossils and the white foam of her waters represents innocence and the dark blue represents her mystery. She is a protectress of the home, I can go on and on about omio yemoja but everyone has there stories , peace and bliss

When I was deep into Christianity. Yemaya or Yemoja came to me and asked why I left her. I told her I would never come back and she simply said "You will come back." Years later I found myself being trained in afro brazillian dance and the goddess or orisha being honored in the dance was Yemaya! I felt so at home dancing under Yemoja and even brought on the rain during the dance. It was beautiful. She appeared in our Pacific ocean as a celestial blue but brown. She was so gorgeous, glowy and feminine. She had a gorgeous crown, along with adornments . She also had a tail that was hidden under the water. The moon shined on her greatness

Ive only heard of Yemaya as a child but long forgot. Ive recently had an awakening and entered the craft n have now been practicing for less than a year. Rn is a hard time for me so I’ve been asking ancestors and deities for help. I kept having dreams of mermaids and the sea. Searched n the first thing to come up was her and just the presence I felt when I said her name. Chills 😳 I may not know much of African deities but I have so much respect and appreciation for the history, culture, and people behind it. It feels weird being called to her and I don’t wanna seem offensive but watching your video was a lot of help. Hopefully I know what I’m doing and that she guides me to do it right. Many blessings!🌛🌕🌜

Asé! Message received.Orí has called into me and I’ve been touched by my ancestors and my Orishas. I decided to call upon the ancestors when I needed support so I lit a few candles and spoke to them at my ancestral alter. For about 3 days and the flames are still lit. I lit two white one candles, 1 blue, 1 red, and 1 yellow candle in hope to invite them into my space using my intuition but I think this ritual has helped me unlock who my Orí is and I believe based off this video it is Yemaya! I haven’t did an “official” Orisha reading yet but when I studied abroad in Cuba My santería friend told me they think Oshun is my Orí. My friend who practices Candomblé thinks my Ori is Oya. Pero after hearing this story and the fact the Blue candle is the candle that is burning the slowest feels like I am Yemaya and she lives with me thanks to this video. And all them other Orishas are within me to bc I gave birth to them! Many other things in common like the fact that I’ve only Lived in Coastal states bc I had to live close to the beach. I always felt like the water called me and like my ancestors were in the sea. And on top of that I have seashells tatted on me and I love the color blue. Asé message received! Thank you for this channel! Divine Timing! And I love you! Asé

Interesting pataki! I think every different story that tells of the Orishas Genesis no matter how different they may be can ultimately find common ground in teaching us about not only the ache that they represent but what the personality of their energy/spirit is. I was taught that Yemaya and Oya were sisters, Yemaya ruled the Egun and Oya owned the Ocean, Yemaya tricked Oya into switching their traits after showing her everything on earth BUT the cemetery. Once the deal was finished Oya was furious being stuck with her end of the deal, leading to why Oya and Yemaya are not friendly with each other nor are fed together. There’s also a pataki that is said that the Dead have a special love for Yemaya because she gave the Egun the ability to speak. I was taught that both Yemaya and Oya are primordial Orishas created by Olodumare and do not have Orisha parents. Great video!

New subbie and i enjoy your content. Just recently finished watching your Oshun (I know a very similar and yet additional version to both of these Goddesses with all do respect) which led to Mama Yemaya. I am her child. I appreciate you speaking on the The Orishas. I was in a really dark place at a point and recently (last year) was introduced to them through signs and synchronicities and spirituality. Going down the rabbit hole of anything can be very overwhelming and confusing especially when dealing with major Depression and anxiety. i paused on it for a while, but Mamas Yemaya , Oshun and Oya stuck with me. Oshun stuck with me heavy but, Yemaya was and is on me something different. She sends me so many signs and times i feel overwhelmed to figure out what they are. She is teaching me and telling me something and I'm gonna figure our blessed relationship out some day soon. Thank you again!

Yes! Eso! this is the best story of Yemeya I have heard in awhile. For AfroLatinos the syncretic version of her through folk Catholicism is La virgen de San Juan del Valle for Yemeya and La Virgen Del Caridad for Oshun. In the Texas-Mexico region the shores of Boca Chica is where they meet and AfroLatino children of Yemeya and Oshun go cleanse.

Your pronunciation of their names are very different from what I have been taught, nevertheless I refer to them as mama and papa 😄when I was younger I would always say that they are my real parents. Blessings and prosperity to you and your family Asé💛💕🙏🇹🇹🌻💙

I’ve learned about the other Orisha but Yemaya calls out to me constantly. Seen her in my dreams, I bought a mermaid candle holder which I feel was a gift from her bc never have I ever since before learning about African spirituality have I been into mermaids enough to buy a candle holder of it but then again I’ve always loved the ocean and ocean life and I even wanted to be a marine biologist and deep diver. Anyway, I’m still learning about all the orisha but Yemaya speaks to me literally and figuratively

I love learning things like this. Unfortunately In Liberian culture they taught us never to play with the water because of mami water . A spirit God, the devils wife. She's in the water gaurding the gates to hell. So she's like not a good figure in Liberia but then again I think this version was told to children to avoid childhood drowning now that I'm older.

I’m of Mexican descent. The first time I heard of the name Yemaya was in 2004, it was the name of a merengue song. The artist is Amarfis. There are cumbia songs with this name, even in the Mexican sonidero style. I listen to it at least a couple of times a week. I’ll put links of the songs below in my replies. Thanks for informing.

I honor Yemaya motherly, nurturing, and peaceful nature. She is protective of her children, and always guides the flow of life. I have always been deemed as motherly, nurturing, caring, and gentle with more innocence energies. She is also a mother figure for me. I have a balance of Oyá and Yemaya. My gentleness and advocacy for others, and then my storm and rage for injustice towards others.

So listening to this, it sounds like I am them. Like you I am a Gemini, I am very nurturing. When it comes to children, I’m that fun uncle that will let you be you but won’t take no sh**. I’m very hard to anger or upset but when I do it’s like woah, where that come from. Thank you for getting me a bit closer to figuring myself.
