If I could give more than just one thumb-up for this talk, I would gladly do it. Rarely cried listening to TED talks but this one hit differently. Thank you, Damon and the TED team, for this spectacular storytelling.

I found this while literally struggling to finish my dissertation on this exact topic. On our stories of our relationship to nature and how they are for so many of us unacknowledged or undeveloped or not shared. We all have our own stories about the natural environment, many of us felt more connected when we were children and lost it, some are feeling connected now more than ever as we see the damage wrought but for many that is too scary to confront and we become avoidant. Reading how everything is ramping up was effecting me being able to finish writing about stories, it was starting to feel so small and insignificant. But stories is who humans are and how we make sense and meaning and relationships and values and morals. “First we invented stories, then they changed us”. Please everyone share your story, ask people to share theirs and decide where you want that story to lead next. Our story will be made up of every one of yours.

We have to live sustainably with nature. You have put this into a very compassionate talk, thank you. I hope people will take inspiration and motivation out of this.

What he's saying is true not only if Christianity but all Abrahamic monotheisms. I'm a Hindu atheist from India, while in India we're taught in school that all religions are the same, they are fundamentally not. Hindu philosophy says the universe is divine, therefore the earth and all living things are divine and not separate from humans. One of the main prayers in Hinduism is let there be peace and balance for all life. I'm not saying it is practiced in a perfect way, today the entire world follows Western notions of development and growth.

Beautifully expressed. “The facts don’t matter much when they don’t fit the story…..” Human brains, even “rational” “enlightened” ones, prioritise stories, and cut the facts to fit. That new old story is behind the success of every populist, every gossipy story, every tabloid and social media click and like, every successful ad campaign. It has been the story of our downfall. But it can also be the story of our redemption. Humans brains are inherently creative and collaborative. All the commodifying has not obliterated or negated that! Those of us who see, hear and feel the truth of that, those for whom that fact fits their own story - and there are many - need to keep being courageous enough to tell the story that creativity matters, that the humility to learn and the strength to change our minds, matters. And tell the story that Cooperation, with nature - with the whole of this Natural World (because there is no other type of world), which includes each and every one of us - will be the means by which we can leave everything in a state from which recovery is possible. To leave the World in a better state than we found it - that’s a new old story all our ancestors would recognise. The key to how to tell this story at this moment in history, as it has been at any point in history, is how we understand the word “better”… Our societies’ definitions of “better” have always changed and adapted. And so we can adapt and change that definition again, with the help of stories like this.

The Bible teaches us that we are to have dominion over the earth so that we can be stewards of the earth. We are allowed to utilize nature's resources while also replenishing the planet. It is a symbiotic relationship that God put in place for humans and the Earth.

Truer worlds have seldom been spoken.

Heard. Definitely agree that nature needs to be lifted up in our policy. But Christianity does not teach that man and nature are separate… rather, man is the crown jewel of God’s creation, charged with ruling it responsibly.

An interesting perspective. I totally agree that we need to be stewards of our planet. However, I find it interesting that you only pick modern-ish ideas to illustrate your point - Christianity, science and philosophy from recent times. Following your narrative, what about the earliest beliefs that said one human was better than another or the religions that said pharoah was god or whole swathes of people were less than others, or sacrifices of not just animals but human beings. I don't believe the old story was better. It's easy to pretend that human beings were better 2/5/10,000 years ago. I don't think they were. There's plenty of evidence of exploitation of surroundings and nature and a desire to invent tools to subdue and make life easier. I agree that they were more in 'harmony' with nature - because they had to be. They had to learn to survive with what they new as tribes and people groups. As they met new tribes, new people groups they didn't generally tolerate new ways but culture evolved with the contact and humans now had more information and ideas to get what they wanted. History shows us this, and not just recent history. To me, the thing I take most out of your story is the selfishness of humans, the unwillingness to change their own behaviours for the benefit of others - even their children - and the extreme willingness to blame others for their mistakes. We can't even apologise for slavery or exploitation of indigenous peoples centuries on. If we can't admit and take responsibility for mistreating our own species, we are not looking hopeful for respecting our planet and it's nature. Thank you for your talk.

Day by day I become a nihilist, being hopeless that Earth would have better state supposed to be in the kind of technology we have today but it's the opposite that's happening. i suspect we need a new religion/spirituality with regular ceremonies/ practices/ prayers/ music etc. Humans need ritual to embed these ides as Confucius well knew. More reverence and less distraction.

Hindu scriptures call our age, the Kali Yuga.. but unlike what Damon mentioned, it would last not a few hundred years but until 430,000 CE. This epoch in "human history" is considered to be full of conflict and sin. Educated in stern western sciences, I heard these mythologies through oral traditions and at the age of 40 now, can't help but philosophise that we bear the brunt of seeing this Yuga through.. The call for action is futile but must be undertaken simply because it's dharma. It is important to understand that we are NOT saving mother nature or the earth as mother nature doesn't care about this anthropogenic blip... we are trying to save ourselves. And that pursuit in itself is futile.
