The STRANGERS: Chapter 1 (2024) REVIEW | What Doesn't Kill You 

The way they marketed this was so confusing. It all seemed like it was meant to be a prequel, and then it's just a vapid retread of the first one.

Just think a whole theater had Doctor Wolfula sitting among them and nobody noticed.

It's clever Doc called the killers Betty Boop and Scarecrow looking. The idea of the original director was for the masks to be Betty Boop, Strawberry Shortcake, and The Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz. But of course they didn't get the rights to the likeness of any of those characters and made them new versions

This one underwhelmed me because the ending was EXACTLY the same as the first movie. The hospital setting might be cool for a second chapter, I guess.

It’s interesting how in the original they use the song “Mama Tried” by Merle Haggard and the name of his backing band was the Strangers

Liv Tyler actually lives at the end of the original as well.

I'm surprised nobody ever makes comparisons from the first strangers to the original halloween. They're very similar, aside from the supernatural element of micheal myers.

I honestly like the idea of a more grounded and realistic slasher. Being killed by someone is terrifying, and many slasher films can be too goofy. Not to say that there's no serious slashers, but they tend to be in a more heightened world, when realism can really add to a slasher movie. Although I haven't seen any of the Strangers movies, it kind of sucks that the first one might be boring, and the second one is a goofy slasher. And unfortunately, this just looks like a worse version of the original film.

Agree on the first two films, although Prey at Night began my quick withdrawal from the cinema. I go to a late afternoon show, only to have a pack of teens running around during the film, getting kicked out, returning 2 or 3 times then this one kid breaks off from the group, sits in front of me (I'm pretty much alone in my section) and proceeds to start texting. Zero body count, which for me is kind of a big deal. Now, damn I still haven't seen Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. That used to be opening night for sure. Now, maybe streaming rental.

I’m really digging the bonus (sometimes) non horror reviews at the end Doc. I really wouldn’t mind a separate channel where you talk about other movies if you were to do one.

Doc, you perfectly summed up my views on "The Strangers" (2008). I think it's highly overrated, tedious, and the two protagonists (especially Liv Tyler) were dull and unlikeable beyond belief. It's funny you mentioned Glenn Howerton, as he was the only redeeming quality in that trash heap of a film.

An underwhelming remake, that is probably leading to a disappointing series. Not gonna lie, it is a little sad to see such minimal effort in the writers room.

This first movie was literally stated to be extremely similar to the first, if not a remake of it. I guess some of y’all just didn’t do any research lol? It’s still a trilogy so it can still BE a prequel, just cause this one is copying the first one doesn’t mean the other two won’t have original plots. Obviously, they want to figure out the audience, and the overall opinion is that Prey at night sucked and the first one is great.

Okay, going into it I thought it was a prequel, but when watching I was surprised to see it was not. Also, the characters we’re pretty bland if I'm being honest, but I don't watch the films for the characters but the killers.

I was in a packed theater for the original Strangers and until Halloween 2018, it was the best theater horror experience I ever had. Women were losing their minds screaming. Glorious. And the movie was solid considering the crap getting pedaled as mainstream horror and all of the dang platinum dunes remakes.

i view it as Cheryl Blossom vs the Strangers since Petsch is in it haha

The original Strangers movie wasn’t all that much of a masterpiece to begin with, The Strangers: Chapter 1 at least tries to have u invested in the two main characters’ relationship, even tho it stills falls flat

I somehow missed that there was a new one. The first movie didn’t do much for me despite liking Liv Tyler and Glenn Howerton. The second at least had some fun elements, like the pool scene.

There were protagonists in this reboot? Oh, I thought those were cardboard cutouts. And speaking of painfully boring...stop with the monkey movies! We're so used to crap from Hollywood, we think mid movies are Oscar gold.

They could review, but in my humble opinion, the first chapter was very slow pace for me and I had to deal with annoying loud people in the theater while trying to enjoy it, but it is what it is.

This film was the definition of generic. It was so boring and forgettable, when it ended with "To be continued" I was like "This was barely a story! What's left to tell?!"

I was absolutely shocked at how boring this movie was. It’s getting hate but it doesn’t do anything new just the first movie done worse. I am curious on the sequel though. I’m hoping they go their own route in the follow up sequels and we see the vision on why this was even made

Since I had never seen a Strangers film before, I kinda vibed with it as a cliched slasher following 2 hot leads. I've settled for a lot less in horror.

Well, at least this time, they're not claiming it is based on a true story.

So I’ve never actually seen the first strangers film and I went to go see strangers chapter 1 in the movies on Friday night and then I thought oh I guess I’ll now go watch the original the next day. I went home and I watched the original strangers and my surprise the story is exactly the same including the plot point where they accidentally shoot the wrong guy. Even the line because you were home. So chapter 1 is just a remake so they can make a trilogy. I feel kind of cheated. But I did enjoy the film it did terrify me. HOME invasions are my worst fear. So this movie did get me.

I taught it was an OK movie It does have some flaws but overall is ok. I like how their is one survivor.

The original is supposed to be slow in order to build up the tension. I'd hate to see you do a review of The Wicker Man. However the new one just looks like a shot for shot of the original.

These are two of the DUMBEST protagonist in horror history and that is saying something.

It's Flat Terrible And Boring And Really Un Needed. A 2.5 Out Of A Booshty Ten. I Didn't Hate It , I Just Found It Very Un Scary Unviolent , Un Anything. It Should Have Been Way "Stranger" ? I Think The Director Renny Harlin Is Trying To Build A Mystery By Having Us Guess Maybe WHO These Strangers Actually Are Like A Who Dunnit ? But For Me It Just Does Not Work And If It Does Demystify These Killers What Any Overall Good Is That Anyways ? Annoyingly Also How Well Lit Is That Forest Area In This Movie ? The Pacing Was Ok Enough And Also At Least A Hell Of A Product Placement For Budweiser Twice Or So During It's Run Time At Least.
