This reminds me of when I went to see Fall Out Boy about ten years ago with some "friends" (they only invited me because the person they wanted to invite couldn't go, and they reminded me of the fact the whole time) and the aquaintence in the group that I knew the least kept complaining about the opener the whole time they were playing. Just so you know, the opener was fucking PARAMORE! Like, I'm not even the biggest Paramore fan, but to talk shit about Paramore as you are there in a swarm of potentiel, die-hard, Paramore fans? Distrespectful. We were also in the back-back so luckily there was no chance of the band actually hearing her at all, but still, I was absolutly speechless by the rudness she was spitting next to me. Side note: I alsmost got left behind at the concert because one of them wanted to "teach me a lesson" about how to not be anxious all the time. Anyway, about a year later I saw Fall Out Boy again with a different friend (an actual good one this time), and Wiz Khalifa was one of the openers. I do not really like rap music, and I had no idea who Wiz Khalifa even was, but I had a fucking blast. I could have just sat in my seat and griped and complained the whole time about how Fall Out Boy got a rapper as an opener and that I didn't like it, but that's just not a vibe.

I went to a concert a few weeks ago and it was a pop-punk kind of vibe. The opening band slapped, they did amazing, people who never even heard of them before we're hype as shit just because they brought the fucking energy. However the band who came after them, the band that was before the main performance since there were three groups playing that night, they showed up with this Lo-Fi bedroom-pop kind of vibe and it's definitely not what anyone was expecting, like it wasn't bad but it just was not the same energy at all so people weren't jumping around as much and the lead singer got on the mic and said, "okay we are all California girls so we like to fucking dance, and honestly you guys are not bringing it" like, bruh, your playing mello bedroom pop at a pop punk concert, it was music that was so hard to dance to but people were still cheering them on and being respectful but she was mad we weren't raving out.

This is how concerts worked in the 60's. People sitting for dinner while B.B.King completely shreds his guitar to get a mild clap in the end. Sad that this "culture" may have a comeback or maybe the venue is just not suitable for "pop" or "rock" music but maybe more chilled "dinning while listening to music" but not the other way arround (dinning in a modern concert is a weird concept on itself, I don't know how it still exists)

i went to lollapalooza this year and saw such a weird mix of crowds. Maggie Rogers was there and I only caught the end of her set because I wasn't familiar with her music and was coming over to see the next artist on that stage but the crowd for her was so fun! Like everyone was dancing and singing and having such a good time that it just felt nice to be around them and apart of it even if i didn't know who she was. But earlier in the same day I went to watch Niki's set who's an artist I really like and was so so disappointed with the crowd. Literally no one was paying attention to her and were having very loud conversations the entire time. I was constantly getting pushed around by people coming out of the crowd even though she just started her set. As someone who frequants plays and musicals, we don't want those people either! The problem with them, is that they only care about experience, and have no respect for the other audience members or the actors on stage. They talk during the performances, go on their phones, and drink to the point of disrupting others (fights breaking out and vomiting on other audience members are the main things happening, but shouting during the show and singing loudly are other annoying disruptions). I was hoping maybe concert-goers were having a better time since it's about being loud and going wild lol, but it seems like the same kind of assholes are ruining concerts too, just in the opposite way.

As someone who grew up in LA and only just recently moved out of state for college, there is certainly a certain culture of entitlement around entertainment. I think that, at least to some extent, living in such close proximity to all of entertainment media, it is kind of easy to take all that freak stuff for granted. Like, of course someone in LA isn’t going to value their accessibility to live music as much as someone from Racism, Virginia, because literally every single time an artist goes on a nationwide tour they stop in LA. Live entertainment isn’t a big event for LA residents because it’s kind of a given.

They usually buy tickets in bulk and end up bringing people who are barely interested in being there. I find when I'm not really into the band on stage I try to leave room for the people who do.

just my personal opinion- i feel like the best crowd for a concert is definitely kpop. i went to my first ever real concert for my fav kpop group earlier this year, and it was also outdoors. even though it was an open stadium, the crowd was absolutely WILD. not a single person in sight sitting down, everyone was cheering, singing along, dancing, screaming, it was AMAZING. being there felt like an adrenaline rush and i’d give up everything to go back again. i feel like so many people nowadays just buy concert tickets for the “aesthetic” or just because the artist is popular. it breaks my heart seeing talented artists have a still crowd that only takes photos and videos for social media. that’s why i was so thrilled when i was in such an energetic crowd, and maybe because kpop is more closed off and more of a personalized taste rather than one song going viral and everyone loves it, but those crowds will NEVER let you down. highly recommend getting into kpop and going to a concert. you will have the BEST time of your life❤

I noticed this at a concert I went to, I recently went to my first concert and got extremely lucky to be 5th row and besides a couple people (some drunk ladies and groups of people my age scattered around), I was one of the only people who got up and had a good time. I've never been to a concert before and was expecting everyone to be up and having fun but everyone around me were of a certain older demographic and seemed annoyed by those up and having fun, nobody even went up to the front of the stage til the very last few songs but when I watched other videos, all the people who seemed like genuine fans having a good time were aaaaaall the way in the very back. Its just so sad that only a certain demographic of people can afford good tickets and then have the gall to be annoyed by people acting like fans and having a good time. Hell even the artist ended up making a comment about how quiet our show was later on

I'm a HUGE Maggie Rogers fan, and have been going to her shows for 7 years and have seen her at shows with 100 people vs 10,000 people, and I've ALWAYS had a great experience at her shows. Now, I am from a place that Maggie has roots in so she is seen as a "hometown hero" around here and maybe that's why I've always had a good experience around where I live seeing her. But I have completely been in crowds like this before at other shows and it is so frustrating as a fan. I paid quite a bit to see Bruce Springsteen earlier this year and was SHOCKED by how rude the people around me were. I'm so sad Maggie had to deal with this, because she is so genuine and lovely and an amazing performer.

I like the layout that evolved at the Winnipeg Folk Festival main stage. They made slices of the half circle in front of the stage (narrower at the stage but widen out as you move away): 2 dance slices (one on each side), 1 accessibility slice, 1 staff and volunteers slice, and 1 quiet sitting slice. Doesn't have to be exactly like that but it lets all the sub-groups do their thing. It does suck when all the quiet sitters get all the front (excluding the dancing fans), or when all the moshers get all the front (excluding the accessibility fans). p.s. congrats on 135k!

I like that slice idea a lot. Accessibility slice AND a sit quietly slice would give me and my friends and family more options. I’m disabled but not always wanting to be in my wheelchair. For my most favorite bands and artists I like to be in seats and up close. It’s a real challenge to find seating like that even for sedate performances - in my show going experience, the minute the show starts, everyone’s on their feet. But it’s been a few years since I’ve even been physically able to attend a concert, so I’m curious if the difference would be felt here in Houston. And if I was on the hill at our big outdoor venue, I could definitely one day want to sit or stretch out and listen and want to still be able to see, and another (in the past when I was physically able) be up the whole time, dancing barefoot on our blankets with my people. It’s just so difficult to please everyone but that doesn’t mean venues shouldn’t get creative trying. Unfortunately there’s only to much up-close real estate to be divvied out.

It sounds like they were treating it like they were a lounge singer..? Like you said, dinner and a show energy, but that's nowhere near concert energy, which is what the performer seemed to expect. Maybe they misunderstood the point of the venue that night? Or maybe they venue hired the wrong kind of musician for the vibe of the place, causing confusion on both sides. To me, it definitely seems like a bunch of people who just wanted to eat expensive food and chill with music in the background were put off by an unexpected atmosphere of being asked to behave like a concert crowd. They're certainly lame and snobbish maybe, but with it happening on mass like that it has to be an advertising issue right? Something definitely attracted a different crowd than usual.

@@brandongore711 But wait then that makes perfect sense, because its season tickets for the *venue*, so by design the musician is irrelevant. This is basically just their favorite hang out spot where music happens to be played. About standing up- If someone is disengaged and whining that they have to stand up, that’s one thing, but please be mindful some of us are disabled and can’t stand the whole time, or at all. Disability seating tends to be garbage and if you want to see them without being so far away they look like ants, sadly you have to suck it up and deal with only kind of seeing them, or only seeing them for the few minutes at a time you can stand. They also might not _seem_ engaged with the show because a lot of us with physical issues are also neurodivergent and don’t express excitement in the ways you’re used to. I mean hell, I can’t even sit for long periods of time on a normal basis and can’t dance in my seat or clap through a whole concert just from CFS. If someone is being flat-out disrespectful like eating fucking dinner, talking, and expecting everyone else to sit, that’s probably not the case of course! I’m only saying JUST BECAUSE someone is sitting and seems unexcited, don’t be automatically judgmental. At the same time, my Ma and I went to a concert last night (Jonas Brothers and from what I saw the crowd was lovely thankfully), and we’re disabled so standing up isn’t easy for us. They didn’t have many options for disabled seating (we couldn’t even figure out where the hell it was supposed to be which is a telltale sign the only available seats for disabled fans are both scarce aka unavailable if you don’t buy them asap and they suuuuuuuck) and we wound up out with everyone else. We couldn’t see sometimes but also like…… okay that’s the venues problem for only doing the bare minimum not to get in trouble with the ADA instead of providing ample opportunities for us?? It sure as hell wasn’t the people around us’s fault! We took a bullet and sat for a lot of it, but when a song came on we were crazy about you bet your ass we were standing too! If those people aren’t just being lazy and genuinely had issues standing, I can understand their frustrations and that’s valid, but that’s on the venue and not anyone else around them’s fault. But just like I don’t judge the people standing up, y’all need to be mindful not to make assumptions about (respectful!) people sitting down.

Coming from an LA native, the hollywood bowl is a weird venue!! Whenever my family would go to the hollywood bowl growing up, it was always a picnic dinner + a show ordeal, like we would drag our grandparents there and show up with a bunch of food and chat and watch a performance casually. Often times those performances would be operas or classical music, sometimes they were movie singalongs with a live orchestra, and every once and a while, a pop artist. The vast majority of season ticketholders are middle aged and elderly folks. I think the weird thing about the Maggie Rogers concert at the Hollywood Bowl is that she's a pop artist whose music definitely could appeal to those demographics, so I'm guessing a lot more of that group attended this concert than the average pop concert at the bowl. (For example, I don't imagine there were many season ticketholders at the Louis Tomlinson concert earlier this summer.) When I was growing up, I remember there were also times when I would go with my mom as a work excursion. The company she worked for would buy a certain number of tickets to a random Hollywood Bowl show and then all sit together (though it's probably too generous to assume this explains the crypto talk at the Maggie Rogers concert), which meant that we never knew the artists performing on those nights either. I think this Maggie Rogers concert was just the perfect storm for the old LA entertainment culture to clash with modern concert culture, and I wish Maggie could've had a better experience that night!

I saw maggie 4 years ago at the skyla ampitheater in charlotte, which is an outdoor venue and EVERYONE was dancing and paying attention... amazing energy. This makes me so sad because outdoor venues can be so great.

I went to my first outdoor venue this weekend at the Fivepoint Amphitheater in Irvine, CA for Young The Giant and Milky Chance. Seats were in a bleacher fashion. Everyone was amazing. Crowd absolutely rocked. But once you walked out to the grass/picnic area, yeah people were chatting and talking. I was neither a huge YTG or MC fan (they’re so amazing, I just wasn’t a regular listener - I am now!) but the crowd made me love them even more. it was great. I hope my other experiences at outdoor venues are the same.

i’ve only been to metal concerts and one men we trust concert - the latter was odd because people were talking the whole time. i have always had a blast at metal concerts and festivals.

saw maggie at radio city in february and she also stopped to tell us to be more enthusiastic, bc so many of her fans were in the BACK or way up in the balcony bc the tix were so expensive. my friends and I were super far back and so many people around us were standing completely still or talking or just not paying attention like they clearly did not care who she was

this really makes me so sad. i havent gone to a concert in la since the big C but i was a HEAVY la concert goer in 2016-2019 and it was one of my favorite places to see artists. sometimes i feel so detached from reality because how could anyone ever go to see a live music performance and not.... get lively??

genuinely i saw dev in philly and it shocked me to my core when people were giving me/my group weird looks for getting excited.. like isnt that the whole point?

For the last 3 years, I've been a VIP Season Pass holder for Ogden Twilight, which is held at an open air venue like the bowl (but way smaller). I get that pass because I really care about the artists I like and want to maximize my experience at shows (like Jordana and Dev Lemons at Kilby Court which I'll be at 😉). Even though I COULD go to all of the shows, I don't go to the ones I'm not super interested, because I don't want to kill the vibe or be in the way of somebody else that actually wants to be there. Being a pass holder isn't an excuse for bad etiquette.
