I’ve always loved how Johto had coexistence with nature at its center. We encounter Sprout Tower early on as a positive example, followed shortly by Team Rocket harvesting Slowpoke Tails as a negative example. Especially early in the game, you get a real sense of a region with a long spiritual history that is being disrupted by greedy, exploitative criminals. Makes you wonder if there’s some social commentary going on…
@@onstructures "...a fair bit of commentary and symbolism in the franchise!" ...such as Garchomp being partially inspired by the era of the "Land Sharks" which once wrought havoc upon the real estate landscape in urban areas of Japan?
This video is: - A short look into eastern architecture and history - A look at a building throughout multiple media forms - A discussion on earthquake resistant architecture - Extremely well edited and narrated for a new channel, on par with ones that did this for years How the hell do you only have 4 k subscribers? This has all the ingredients for a million subs.
I offer this like and comment to the algorithm gods Insane quality for such a small channel. Hope this gets to reach more people, it's such a cool topic
yo if this guys special interest diagram doesnt involve overlapping circles for pokemon and architecture... i wont know what to believe (great video man)
Was I the only western kid who understood this alrdy back when the games came out? Cuz I’m pretty sure the NPCs n people in the anime explain all that. But still this video was very informative on the specifics of that kind of engineering.
Oh yea, the games and whatnot do try to explain it, but it’s so different from how we build modern buildings I had to dig into it more. Thanks for watching!
Someone probably already mentioned this, but Bellsprout was supposed to get a split evolution in gen 2, like oddish, but got scrapped (in favor of sunkern iirc). This alternative evolution looked a lot more like a big bellsprout than the weepinbell/victreebell line, very fitting for this tall tower.
If a beam is horizontal at what point does it become a column If it's at 1° off horizontal? 1° off vertical or like 45° Or is it something else when at an angle
I've always confused the name of this tower... For some reason I remember it being called the Bell Tower when I played Pokémon Silver 20+ years ago. Then there's the Tin Tower right beside it which further confuses me since I believe (from memory) that was the tower that burnt down right? I don't remember a Sprout Tower...
So the sprout tower is in violet town where the first gym badge is. The tin tower was renamed the bell tower in heartgold/soulsilver. Brass tower was the one that burned down. Edit: the tin and brass towers were in ecruteak city… the 4th gym I think
Cool video. A building that can survive an earthquake is probably the closest we'll get to a realistic human response to the Pokémon world. I'm gonna ignore that part at the end where I think you tried to imply you play as Ash.
Ah whoops, sorry for the confusion. No, the column primarily moves, but under large enough excitement (loading) the whole structure will move, including the floors, which will act as part of that snake toy action.
interesting things to consider: western architecture was also very in tune with nature and less about resisting it until fairly recently. this was accomplished through a variety of techniques, chief among which was building structures slowly. the leaning tower of piza is a prime example of this. it has been known that soil will settle under immense load over time since millenia, so people back then built structures slowly, allowing for the soil to settle as a structure was constructed, allowing for modifications to be made in accordance, which is why the leaning tower actually can never be made to stand fully upright, the structure was modified where the walls were made taller on the leaning end to counteract the lean. of course the leaning tower did continue to lean until the soil below was actually modified using modern science, but that does not change the fact that, had they built the tower in a shorter period of time, it would have fallen centuries ago. another important example are forged iron nails. forged iron nails are flexible, they allow for movement within the construction, they allow the wood to "work" as it dries or picks up moisture throughout the seasons.
Thanks for the comment! I agree with what you’re saying regarding western architecture, so often in cross cultural discussions authors paint east and west with hard distinctions which is probably hyperbolic in most cases. I can’t imagine the author of a martial arts pop-sci book has really thought deeply about the worlds architectural practices… I didn’t add my own commentary to that effect, because I thought the video was in a good place to end.
Interesting, I'm an architect focused into urban planning and heritage buildings. And also I'm into Pokémon, not as before, however still I am. Well done 👍🏻👍🏻 Where can I check more of you?
