James Gunn's latest film, The Suicide Squad, is another step into the crazier, R Rated side of the DCEU that Cathy Yan paved way to. So let's talk about this fantastic film and how it's able to make us care about these wacky, violent characters!

The best part of Starro isn't just that line. It's that we SAW how Starro was much smaller when found, abused by the American astronauts, and then tormented and experimented on for DECADES. Even the possessed bodies took the opportunity to say how awful Grieves is. Then the line finally comes in as a final nail in the feels-coffin: "I was happy, floating, staring at the stars..."

It must be cause I know his comic counterpart that I didn't cope with that. My point is, they should've spend more time going in that direction than wasting 5 minutes in Harley Quinn's romantic adventure that lead nowhere, maybe use The Thinker more than a exposition guy and explore more of his relation with Starro.

Another great example of why we care about these characters is when Polka Dot Man used his powers in the fight with Starro. Throughout the movie we learn how he and his siblings were abused and experimented on by his mother and how that affected him throughout his life. Then when he takes out one of Starro's legs you immediately see a spark in his eyes as he realizes that he can use his powers for good and overcome his mother's influence on himself. Peacemaker is so nuanced. They all are, but it stood out with him. John Cena is great here. That line about how keeping the peace is “even worth the life of a hero like yours, sir, so please don’t make me do this” was excellent. And even when he does kill Flag, he looks sad about it. That's the quality of Gunn's writing. He makes you care about these characters. In the 2016 Suicide Squad, you can tell who was going to die and who was going to live and it didn't add anything to the movie. You have the bar scene but it doesn't add much to the characters other than some background. This one, however, you love these characters! With The Suicide Squad and Doom Patrol, the misfits and outcasts are cooler than the Justice League and Titans.

James Gunn basically made the majority of his movie into the bar scene, as in he gradually inserted moments of team bonding from start to finish so that at the end we all finally got a clear picture of who these characters are and why we should care about them. Whereas in SS that bar scene was a very small bit in between scenes of half assed team chemistry and messy film editing, we just didn’t get enough of it

Gunn made a similar statement with this movie as his two 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies -- He dives into the human qualities of the zany, oddball or in this case, immoral, characters. Another statement he's making is that superhero as a genre isn't getting old, but the way it is presented recently is. Gunn still has tricks on him, or at least he's the only one still willing to use them. 'The Suicide Squad' isn't perfect, and I still prefer the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies; but it pulled the genre out of the creative drought, at least to me. My interest in superhero movies have been rejuvenated.

You know what's funny....Gunn's acknowledgement of how the superhero genre is getting repetitive. The first time Synder tried to revolutionise the genre, he received backlash. Starting his superheroes as these morally gray characters and growing them into being the heroes they are. The best critic of a character or let's say human beings in general are when they are in the tough spot, when they are in the darkest of the days. There's this awesome quote from amazing Spiderman "Anyone can win a fight when the odds are easy! It's when the going's tough - when there seems to be no chance - that's when it counts!" That's when, we can truly understand and connect when the characters are really going through something cuz the fact is people right now are suffering daily, dying left and right. People dealing with traumas of their past lives, their sins of the society and country etc...they understand pain and that's the reality not the illusion rich people indulge in their mansions. Only a temporary pleasure turned dust when real life begins...that's pain. We need to start making superheroes exploring these genres, instead of making a comedy fest every FUCKING TIME... Hence why I can connect with most DC stories and thankfully even in the mainstream media...becuz of how they capitalise on the concept of pain, hardship and overcoming adversity. I am not saying, it's bad to make movies that are fun...but atp we have enough of them. Thanks to the MCU but even then if you wanna make movies that are a comedy fest capitalise on the heroes/villians overcoming adversity personally and socially. Cuz the society, the culture and people are much of a character as the heroes

@@tauhid9983 I disagree on Snyder but I do agree with you on the MCU's humour. At their best, comedy is used to show the characters attempt at levity during a tense moment, as a façade, and simply part of the characters' quirks. Recently, they feel corporate-mandated to squeeze some chuckle from the audiences because they fear the scene's getting boring.
@tauhid9983

@@peterfrank3365 yes I guess that corporate mandate to force in humour becomes the weight that would eventually crush them. That’s why stories that are more serious like the Cap trilogy or TFAWS. Is a lot more fun ironically. I know the TDK trilogy revolutionised the idea of superhero genre with the serious dark tone and MCU with their fun comedy but MCU has been doing that for more than a decade…it’s time we go back to old school. Also kinda curious about what you disagree on my argument of synder. I was just saying that one of the main critic of synder movies is that it’s not fun and colourful….and that everthing was moody and serious. Ppl were looking for a marvel movie hence was disappointed. But ppl dont realise that the moody atmosphere was necessary for the storytelling. At least that’s what I see lol

@@tauhid9983 i think people are fine with dark and serious, the whole superhero movie industry literally changed because of the dark knight series, people just used that reason to hate snyder's movies because snyder's movies are really flawed, not bad, flawed, there's good stuff there, but the arc of the superheroes in it are too slow and is in reverse of the mcu, snyders character arc are like going from an empty puzzle to a full puzzle in 3 movies, batman isnt batman till the snydercut, superman isnt superman till the snydercut and lex luthor just became like comic book luthor till the very end of justice league, unlike the mcu who completes the puzzle in the character's first movie and adds more pieces along the way. People are comfortable with snyder's dark theme, hell, people couldve been fine with batman killing if it like had a reason on his arc (which it did, but was never really put on to light). people just want to recognize the character they payed to watch and snyder didnt do that very well till it was too late.

Ratcatcher 2 was such a sweet gumdrop, and yet she was also the one who actually killed the main baddie. I loved how she was the heart of the movie. That flashback with the music during the climax of the movie was great. It's pretty sad that some of the negative reviews are just talking about plot, when the character development is actually more important. This is just a long-ass episode with them defeating the bad guy in the end so the important part is how the plot changes them.

Probably the most I’ve enjoyed a comic book movie since Spider-Verse. I think one of many things I liked about this movie, is that it stands on it’s own. You don’t need to see the previous flick to enjoy this one. It’s just a movie. Not a small piece of a larger puzzle.

I think this movie captures a lot of what made most of DC's animation great. From the very start with Batman: TAS, they've always developed the villains and gave them good motivation and humanity, where even if you can't sympathize with them, you can understand why they're doing what they're doing. In fact, Batman Beyond even gave their Starro a sympathetic backstory. The animated Suicide Squad also did a lot of what this film did. Of course, they're not as good as this film since they have about 1/50th the budget and we're made in much less time. But even with their more limited runtime, they were able to flesh out the characters, have good interaction between them, and give them missions that suited their skills.

I think that they should've made rick flag as bloodsport since in the comics, bloodsport became who he is after his brother died fighting for the country.. Would make more sense to why he was so triggered after finding out abt project starfish. It's such a waste that they made Idris Elba's character to have the same story as will Smith's deadshot.. The scene where he decides to save the city could've given deadshot an arc. Plus, WB couldn't care less abt making the prequel of how superman went to the icu.. Last but not least, it would've given more stakes to the actual "main" or badass characters in the movie. N that's fair for Polka-dot Man. Rip milton🙏

@2 gamer bros honestly the multiverse will end up killing dc. DC's biggest issue is their best stuff is in different universes, fans are getting confused and they are less interested when characters are done multiple times. The multiverse should mean better films but it just means they will all be in different universes. With the mcu, we got to see the heroes interact and the overall story build up but with dc, we won't see any of it and even if they do cross characters over, it just won't feel the same. I'd much rather they just cancelled everything and rebooted one more time and did dc properly in 1 universe cause its just a huge mess.

@@luke5930 that way of thinking is what makes it impossible nowadays to have a new “The Dark Knight” or a “Spiderman 2”. We don’t need to have the biggest crossovers of all time in cinema to get a great movie. Things don’t need to scale so much we are left hanging like we are right now with Marvel. Self contained stories are full of heart and can carry as much story as the convoluted ones e got in the last decade. It isn’t going to destroy DC if they want to be different from their rival’s right now. It’s just a different approach to telling stories.

I thought Peacemaker was one of the standouts, almost akin to the Thanos we got in IW. He clung so tightly to his ideals that he was willing to kill Rick Flag even though he didn't want to. When he called him a hero it felt like he was just begging him not to go through with releasing the files. This movie really did its best to give everyone deeper levels, even having the classic moral dilemma of a good man vs a good soldier. Flag was a good man, the best of all of them in the team, he would have released the files without barter, without blackmailing, he would have done it because it was right. That's not to say that I don't think using it as blackmail was the wrong call, it was absolutely the optimal choice for the remaining squad members. I really liked Flag and I'm sad he died such a tragic death
