The (up to now) lost title sequence from 'The Sunshine Makers'.. featured on the soon to be available Blu-ray release of the "Rainbow Parade' cartoons from Thunderbean and Film Preservation Associates.
Interesting find! This was later re-released as an advertisement for Borden's dairy products later that year. The original end title is the same as it was shown in the original print of "Parrotville Fire Department". This and the "Parrotville Fire Department" are the holy grails. I wish if "The Picnic Panic" would have the original titles, except one original title is on there, but missing the MPPDA logo, the credits and the original end title where it got replaced with a later end title. "The Picnic Panic" was the only "Rainbow Parade" that has a live action and animation to it.
From what we've been able to determine so far, it appears that Eshbaugh managed to attain the rights to both Sunshine Makers and Pastry Town Wedding. My guess is that he bought these (or attained non-exclusive rights) sometime in the late 30s. The Borden's titled version of the short seems to date from right around 1940 (The print with this title from Eshbaugh's personal collection is on 1940 stock, and a trade ad showing the title card in the background is also from 1940). I didn't stock date Eshbaugh's print of 'Pastry' (unless I'm forgetting and have it written down somewhere. There is a 35mm print of 'The Picnic Panic'. I'll know soon if it has its original titles....
Eshbaugh got the rights several years after the Van Beuren studio closed in 1936. That's why Burt Gillett's name was eliminated from the 1940 Borden's reissue.
Oh I remember this cartoon when I was single-digits and it ran occasionally on Channel 5 in New York. And I remember the Bordon's Milk on its opening and closing title. What's the story about the change of titles? And thank you for finding!
Yes. When Ted Eshbaugh acquired the rights to this cartoon, he "leased" it to Borden's as a promotional film in 1940, with new opening and closing titles [and *his* name as the sole director].
"featured on the soon to be available Blu-ray release of the "Rainbow Parade' cartoons from Thunderbean and Film Preservation Associates." Where will this be available for purchase from? All I could find from Googling was the page on thunderbeananimation that said pre-orders were only offered through June 2017.
Yes it will! Follow 'Thunderbean Thursday', most every Thursday on Jerry Beck's cartoonresearch.com for updates on the set and all things thunderbean. You can also see updates at the Animation Internet Database (IAD) forum and blu-ray.com forum (easiest to find under 'studios and distributors).
Excellent. Will there be some kind of announcement when it's available for purchase? I've never bought anything from Thunderbean before so I've got no idea how it works but I'd really like to get this Rainbow Parade collection.
