It's amazing and such an obvious step forward in entertainment! First we had videogames, then we had videogame streamers. So of course next why not just remove the players altogether?! Games that play themselves! Genius!
What makes Dunkey such a smart writer is that, rather than say the story is shallow and incoherent, he just focuses in on how prominent (and ultimately pointless) the whole Kong Army arc is and let's that speak for itself.
Damn. That's good. Except maybe new grounds would be a little bit more edgy (the movie didn't have a joke about the "unknown effects" of eating "strange mushrooms"
"this movie is like antz but i liked it because i saw it with my girlfriend and we got popcorn and icees and i like mario" this was my exact experience too 10/10 honestly
My favorite parts of the movie were when Mario and Luigi’s brotherhood really shined, it honestly made me a little emotional and I wish there was more of that
Knowing the outline of the first half of the plot, my one major want for the movie was that the final scene wasn't just Mario defeating Bowser, but Mario and Luigi defeating Bowser together, and it delivered!
@@jerrodshack7610 Bro tf you talking about? They're the Mario Bros. of course they're gonna care about each other, they're like this 🤞 And the rest of their family were super toxic lmao
I really loved your cameo in the movie where you killed Doug Bowser for not getting a new Donkey Kong and shouted your famous catchphrase “Did I mine that!?” Really saved the entire movie!
Critics judge these movies based on objective reality unlike the audience. I think the world would be a far better place if everyone took notes and judges things objectively. For example, I grew up watching the Ice Age movies, and believe it or not that franchise is very similar to the Mario Movie. The Ice Age movies are fun films, but not good films. (Outside of the first Ice Age which is a good film but not a fun one) Same goes for the Mario Movie. It's a fun family adventure, but it isn't an overall good movie, as it lacks basic storytelling principals. Anyway, the point of this is just to say that I don't think the Mario Movie is a big ''W movie'' even as a lifelong Mario fan. Examples of actual ''W'' children's films include Puss in Boots 2, The Croods, Kung Fu Panda 2, Mega Mind, Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek 2 etc.
Yeah, like when the Koopa shouted "Blue Shell!", I would never have guessed that's what they were referring to unless they just randomly shouted it lol.
My favorite part was when they did the credits right instead of citing someone fake like "grant kirkhope" for something they didn't make like "the dk rap"
I've been describing it as less a movie with characters and a plot and emotional stakes and consequences, and more just a constant stream of easter eggs strung together in what can only be called a plot in the most technical sense of the word. And also super fun and I loved it.
I cried when I saw Chunky Kong, it’s like seeing that good friend that has been struggling with a crack addiction for so long finally come back and begin his road to recovery. I need a Donkey Kong movie with chunky Kong in it as the movie’s heart and soul.
Dude, yes. Going into the movie, the # 1 thing I was hoping to see was seeing Chunky. When I saw him, a light glowed in my insides and peace flowed in me, knowing that our friend is not dead and is safe. Hopefully there will be a DK Movie where Chunky is in it more, primate punching and boulder throwing at kremlings as he grows giant, shooting pineapples as he plays the triangle.
I’m surprised Dunkey never talks about the Mario and Luigi games they’re everything he wants from an rpg fun stories, wacky characters, good music, no random encounters, interactive turn based combat like paper mario, no anime aesthetic, and there’s not too much grinding and it’s a mario game which is always a bonus
Crazy that this movie did not make one billion dollars before Dunkey published his review and now that its out, this movie has made over 1 billion dollars. Dunkey once again proving his influence
I watched this movie blindfolded and holding a USB steering wheel, and managed to achieve a world record time for fastest viewing. My favorite part was the Bowser's Big Bean Burrito scene, which I fast-forwarded through in a mere 1.6 seconds.
@@SpacepoetYT Cue the generic History Channel music playing alongside some random Kong's voice narrating a letter he wrote home to his beloved, hoping the war will someday end.
Paid critics are out of touch and only understand that this was a subpar movie, just like Illumination's normal output. And the fans making new accounts on Metacritic just to award this turkey a 10/10 are not about to be the ones to underscore any of its many failings.
@@Asterra2 I half agree. It’s a lighthearted movie that’s colorful to look at but lacks any real memorable plot and while Mario was portrayed as more capable than Luigi at the start, he was downgraded to clumsy when paired with Peach. It’s definitely not a 10/10 or even a 9/10. It’s a fun enjoyable advertisement for the game that respects its references. But even though most Mario Games have next to no story, they still could have come up with a more intelligent plot that appealed to little kids and adults. The paper Mario games have pretty good stories for example. This move gets a 6.5/10 for me. Fun movie but I’m almost 30 and it’s not something I’ll be watching again and again like Spirited Away for example.
Wow, that “Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom” snippet literally unlocked a core memory of mine from two decades ago. Dunkey truly is a man of refined taste.
When I went to see the movie, we stayed all the way through the credits for the end credits’ scene. The scene was basically a shot of a Yoshi egg and the group of teenage boys in front of us absolutely lost their minds. I guess they were really excited for Big Yoshi.
thank you for all the very funny donkies donky. ive been watching for over ten years and your videos always make me laugh and make my day better. congrats on the nintendy directy i watched your old 200,000 video after i saw you in it, that made a grown man emotional. lots of wonderful memories laughing with friends - keep chasing your dreams mr. donald
Dude, when Mario said "Look Luigi, we're the new Super Mario Bros!... U Deluxe coming to Nintendo Switch this summer." I immediately shat my theater seat and almost shed a single tear.
But I liked it because I saw it with Leah and we got popcorn and Icees and I love Mario. I love that line of thinking. Life is so much better when you focus on those sorts of things.
Dunkey gushing over all the references, I could feel that. As expected of the sophisticated Dunkey. In classic Dunkey fashion, he sounds sarcastic the entire time, but we know full well that he is serious.

Dunkey saying it felt like watching a high budget version of those old Mario flash animations is so accurate. I had the same thought while watching it Edit: when Luigi is getting chased by the dry bones, I was reminded of the Mario zombie apocalypse flash animations
I forgot about mario taking out a wiggler with a shotgun. I watched that exact animation probably a dozen times. immediately it made me think of newgrounds and especiallky madness interactive.
I have been binging redlettermedia for the last 2 weeks and legit didn’t know about the channel before that. Needless to say i appreciated the intro in this video.
I've been a fan of RLM forever, but ironically I only discovered Dunkey in this last year. Interesting how people can miss others even after so much time.
It's so sweet that Dunkey called Beauty and the Beast the story of his life. Really shows how beautiful he thinks Leah has become after her true love's kiss transformation.
True love's kiss is from Enchanted. In Beauty and the Beast the spell was broken by learning to love, *not* by kissing someone. Get this guy outta here.
Easter eggs totally sold it. I went with my 4 yr old and my brothers. We were freakin out about all the songs, recreated shots, luigi's mansion nods, etc. Im with ya on the kong army deal real dumb. Great time 7/10 for a fan of the series for sure
Great saved me a bunch of time,, PSYKE i already knew this movie was gonna suck DIYUUKKKK, imean its just the lego movie reskin wtf you on? am i the only one who realised this
@@funkthat lol yeah it kinda is... but I enjoyed both of those movies. Ironically this was the first time I've been to the cinema since the lego movie came out
@@yourmum69_420 Haha what a coincidence, also I loved the Lego movie as well, but that actually had a script, great references, and good characters. I havent seen it but Im sure the Mario movie just has your cliche animated personalities (strong black woman, independent woman PEACH, old guy, hero, idiot side character LUIGI) pasted onto different cast members of the the Mario Universe, LAME
@@funkthat well both movies have fairly simple plots, but yeah lego movie's was better. Mario movie was definitely not short of references though, they were everywhere so you can't complain on that front. As for the characters, you're pretty much right tbh except Bowser was fantastic. Jack Black did such a good job; it's worth watching just for him.
This is way more accurate than every other review I've seen. It precisely explained why I was pretty sure it would be a movie for 5 year olds instead of a movie for 12 year olds.
You're not wrong. My 4 year-old had a great time at the movie, which is what I was hoping for and all I was looking for. We gotta go in with the right expectations.
When I heard “take on me” during the driving part I was like yeah that’s pretty alright. BUT!!! There was an original score with a godly DK country track called “drivin me bananas” that got booted in favor of take on me. Finding this out I was like “what the butt?”. That’s all I gotta say
I went to see the Mario movie and the theatre was filled with snotty children, and one day later I felt like I had contracted every illness known to man. Would do it again!
@Kris Dreemurr I sat at the back of the theater and the most inconvenience I had to face was 1 time someone infront of the screen. Backseat are always best at theater, and at my theater they are cheap for some reason
Man, I wish I could get excited about this like Mike and Jay were. So much love for the source material, so much passion in every goddamned frame. Sadly, I happen to *like* movie scripts, so this one isn't for me.
I also saw this with my wife, we got popcorn and M&Ms delivered to our seats but also smuggled in drinks cuz we're 30 year old children. Perfect movie, ten out of ten.
"bag in the can" hahahahahahaha i fully ejected my mouthful of tea on my keyboard, thanks. what a great shoutout to fellow wisconsin movie review institution redlettermedia :)
This is really a movie you watch and enjoy yourself while watching but then after leaving the theater immediately forgetting what it was even about. 7/10.
Ah, the good old "designed by committee for mass appeal" 90 minute movie. Pop it in, turn off your brain for an hour and a half and drool at the pretty colors. Truly the McDonald's of cinema experience.
This was lowkey wholesome hearing dunkey talk about the whole experience, each scene seeming like they were only remembered because of his significant others reactions. Bagels.
I really loved the cameo part in the movie where dunkey said “big bowser burrito, I definitely got the world record on that baybie”. Best movie of all time 10/10
Some of your best verses, especially the section starting w Godzilla/Dracula all the way to the blood on the streets n “peace” bit. It hit my brains g spot. No homo
Dunkey (my favourite RU-vidr for a decade now), referencing both The Nightmare Before Christmas (my favourite non-live-action film), and Super Smash Bros Melee (my favourite video game of all time) ??? This is why Dunk is, was, and will always be, the best (to me)
1:35 good lord that takes me back. The makers of these animations would hide easter eggs in the craziest places. For example you'd have to zoom way in on the screen to read text on a piece of paper blowing by. I think anyone willing to put details in their movies like this is at least showing some love.
If I were ever working on a big production like a movie or something and Jack Black was in it I'd be so happy because no matter how shit of a job I did he would just make the movie great anyway.
