A 34-year-old man rambles for 20 minutes about how Chris Pratt’s Mario voice in a Super Mario Bros. Movie for kids is ruining his childhood. / johnnyzaccari #SuperMarioBrosMovie #MarioMovie #Nintendo
His voice fits _so_ well. It kind of sucks that his army was pitifully outmatched because he genuinely sounds menacing. EDIT: swapped the words “genuinely” and “sounds” around.
@@PhilipMarcYT the voice is just chris pratt. It's not a god awful voice like the internet claims it is, and even if it was recast, we'd be at the same issue: a big name actor hired to play Mario because he's a big name actor
I think Chris Pratt is too big of an actor that people can't separate the voice from the actor. If you try to forget the person the voice is coming from and try to just focus on Mario's character in the movie, I think it's a perfect fit. It's hard to do right now though because we only have 2 lines from Mario.
Keep in mind that miyamoto and nintendo have been keeping a watchful eye on illumination with this movie, as the production has been in development for many years, as many online reviewers think illumination as a whole usually is considered just average not bad or terrible but average, and usually illumination has a familiar art style with their movies like despicable me & minions, sing, secret life of pets, lorax and grinch to name a few, but this movie seems to have a more complex art style compared to the rest of illumination's library, it just shows that with the right people involved, they can create something spectacular, as for chris pratt's voice, it will get some time to get used to honestly, but everything is looking promising because i think they know they have to do this movie right. on the bright side, no pop tunes were anywhere to be found so that is a positive.
That’s what bothers me more, is that Nintendo gave the approval and are satisfied to replace Charles Martinet with Chris Pratt who sounds like he is using his regular voice; no attempt to portray closely to sound like Mario while you have Bowser & toad sounding reasonably close to the video game voices. I don’t understand how they found that acceptable. It really sucks & is going to ruin the experience for me. The movie centers around Mario. Maybe Nintendo cut corners here because we know everything else is really good so we’ll watch it anyways.
@@Oscar-Guzman Christ Pratt didn’t “replace” Charles, dude. There’ve been multiple different iterations of Mario throughout the franchise’s history that Charles didn’t voice, the movie version is simply just another iteration of the character. I’m honestly happy that Chris is doing his own thing and isn’t just doing an impression of Charles Martinet’s Mario voice, if anything people would’ve been even MORE pissed off if that was the case.
I appreciate them having toad yelling right off the jump, that gives me hope for good references. But I still need to hear a full on Toad scream on the big screen lol
Since the first mario game is technically the one where he saves Pauline from Donkeykong, his "fish out of water" story could be that he tries to fight Donkeykong, but somehow ends up in the mushroom kingdom
Since this is clearly an origin story, I’m hoping they go the Muppet Movie route where the movie is also a movie in-universe with scenes of the characters watching themselves in a movie theater, just so we can hear Charles Martinet as Mario at least once.
@@rolltide9897 i agree with 3dw. I think that game perfectly portrayed a goofy and cartoony but threatening bowser. Odyssey I can see, but god damn I wish we saw more of bowser. His plan seemed awesome but we only fight him like twice. His presence was definitely on par with galaxy since he actually, y’know, beats up Mario and the odyssey like 3 times as opposed to just staying in a castle.
@@avocadeous Well, spoilers alert, but in paper jam, he kidnaps and enslaves toads, litterally he keeps them locked in a underground dungeon and makes them work so he could make his castle fly in the air, and later on after their sons got beaten by Mario,Luigi and paper Mario, the Bowsers fire canonballs at peach's castle while Toads were still inside. Then at the end of the game, just before the final boss, the Bowsers say they were gonna trap Mario, Luigi and paper Mario in the paper book then burn it with them inside
Nintendo hired Chris Pratt for a reason. They would never let some random celebrity get hired if they didn't portray their beloved characters in a way they like. Nintendo is VERY strict with how their characters are represented and portrayed so they must see something we don't with Crisp Rat's voice.
I'm cautiously optimistic for this film. I didn't think the movie would look this promising. I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I'm liking what I'm seeing with this movie so far.
Can someone explain to me why they needed Hollywood actors to voice this movie to begin with ? Why not use people who just do voice and will most likely do a much better job? While saving half of the budget ofc and maybe using that on a sequel or something.
Right, something tells me hiring those actors costed more than to keep the original voice actors doing the movie. Anyone who says they don’t wanna hear Mario talk through a whole film is hard to believe they are even a fan. We’ve heard Mario talk for over 30 years now. What fan is really bothered by his voice speaking.
I personally don't think Mario sounds completely like Pratt, I barely hear him (other than when he flies out the pipe). I Also don't think it's bad at all either, it's pretty good
You and me are the very few that like his Mario voice!! I don’t understand the over exaggeration people say that he sounds like himself and not fitting in as a Mario.
@@ezeke99m I mean, I can hear Pratt the tiniest bit, but it's not a bad voice at all, It could've been way worse, it could be better yeah, but you get what you get, personally even if it was just Pratt's voice I feel it'd fit a tiny bit anyways
Your take about Pratt's voice, I fully understand (especially the "offended" part!). For my own personal taste, I really like Pratt's voice-over work (The Lego Movie, Onward), so I'm happy to have him play Mario (and I find it works well - I got a very good first impression). Besides, I was ready from the very start that Mario was probably not going to have Martinet's voice, even before the cast announcement.
@@PhilipMarcYT I'm French-speaking, and I actually don't like the French dub at all (to each their own). Keep in mind though, that I'm very biased, because I'm a huge original-soundtrack moviegoer, whatever the language (with subtitles when needed). Anyway, basically, I don't mind very much Mario having Chris Pratt's voice. Simple as that. :)
It does feel nice to feel excited for the movie after knowing of it for so long and worrying about how it will turn out with Illumination making it and the voice cast seeming weird when they were revealed
I don’t even think people would pretend to be offended about a stereotypical Italian voice. Italian jokes now are the most safe and clean way to try and sound “edgy” when you don’t have the balls to make actual ethnic jokes
I grew up on so much Nintendo and so I’m obviously very excited to see how they translate Mario to a full-length movie, but even my mother, who grew up with the original NES games and hasn’t really played any since is excited to see this with me! They’re really capturing an audience that’s even wider than their games. Also, Jack Black is really good at capturing Bowser’s villainous character, serious props to the animation team! I’m curious to see how a game franchise with little to no dialogue but a lot of expression handles an animation movie with plenty of dialogue. So far it seems serviceable, even spectacular to see. On the voice direction and “offending Italians”, I feel like that’s just studio overreach and overreaction because people know what Mario sounds like and would know what he would sound like in a Mario movie if they went with that same direction. I think that might just be some director’s naivety. Everybody knows he’s Italian, I don’t think anybody would actually have an issue.
I’m Irish/Italian and I can say I wouldn’t have been offended by Mario having an Italian accent in this movie, if they were worried about his voice becoming annoying, then they could’ve toned it down like they did with Toad’s voice
@@IcyDiamond True, I’m sure they have their reasons, and the whole “it could offend people” is just a PR move. I could understand it getting annoying like you said, but I’m sure Charles could have controlled his voice somewhat to make it less exaggerated. I think it still sounds fine as a creative adaptation, but it’s still a bit of a strange decision to not have the actual voice of Mario especially since he’s continued to voice him for decades. I know there were cartoons from the 90s that portrayed him with more of a Brooklyn accent so perhaps they’re trying to go for that adaptation. All in all, I think the movie looks stellar and very promising aside from that one voice issue! I’m excited to see where they take their first movie debut in decades!
@@Shaes_Projects Yeah I don’t think we should let one little Pratt ruin the entire movie for us, especially because so far the rest of it looks phenomenal, also we should probably get back to running the hotel Charlie
@@IcyDiamond Lol I love your reaction to seeing my profile pic, and we sure do! Soon enough I hope! I just think she’s an adorable and charming character with a quirkiness to her that I like so I used a picture of her. And yea, I absolutely agree! Everything else in that trailer looked incredible! I know someone on AngryJoe compared it to the early version of the sonic movie with the universally hated design and said this was an equivalent train wreck because of the voice, but I really don’t think so. Even if Chris can’t capture the voice I’m sure he can at least act, he can emote as Mario. It might be a little distracting but I don’t think it’s terrible and will ruin the movie especially with all else considered being promising.
@@Shaes_Projects Yeah this is no where as near as bad as the first Sonic Movie trailer, not only did that creature in the trailer not look like Sonic, it wouldn’t have worked with the whole cute/cool Sonic that they were trying to go with in the movie, and in general I have enjoyed Pratt in The Guardians of The Galaxy films and The Lego Movies so I’m sure I’ll enjoy his performance here, even if its not my preferred Mario voice, also many people say Danny Devito should’ve played Mario, but I think he’d be a way better fit for Wario!
Needless to say, the trailer didn't change my opinion on the casting of Pratt as the titular character either. He's talented for sure, but his performance made Mario sound like more like a down-to-earth-guy (which may be intentional given where his part starts, but still). In fact, this whole situation is similiar the state of the Swedish voice of Winnie the Pooh during the 90's. For those unaware, Pooh's Swedish VA during those times gave him a very light voice, which was as far away from both Sterling Holloway's and Jim Cumming's portrayals. While i'm among the ones that do like the actor's interpretation (partially because it's the one i grew up with, and because i do think it still brings out his naive, yet friendly personality), it was a VERY different take that, in hindsight seemed like a rushed casting choice from Disney Character Voices.. And with that informatio nat the back of my head, the similarities with this movie's Mario can't help but be noticed.
If we get a sequel, I want it to be the story of Super Mario Land and introduce us to Daisy and Tatanga. With Mandy Moore as Daisy and... Mark Hamill as Tatanga. No I'm not kidding with the casting choices.
I’ve seen some people on the internet say Mario sounds like he has a bit of a Brooklyn accent. I kind of hear it, but it’s not too heavy of an accent. Then again he didn’t say a whole lot in the trailer, so hopefully he has more of an accent in future trailers. Personally I would have liked it more if Danny DeVito or Paul Giamatti played him instead.
Now, if this is going to be the direction that video game movies are going to go in, I am now hoping for a lord of the rings style legend of Zelda Ocarina of time trilogy.
I think this is actually the best time to bring something like this out, and I think sonic the hedgehog had a lot to do with it. Sonic the hedgehog basically threw down the gauntlet and Nintendo, I don't think had any choice but to do that, and I'm so glad that they did. I can't wait to see this personally.
Personally I'm just going to ignore the voice I cannot wait to watch this movie I'm going to go with my niece because my little niece loves Mario I can't wait till next year
It would be interesting if the movie starts in New donk city with a sequence of Mario saving the mayor Pauline from donkey Kong and toad shows up with interest to mario and then takes him to mushroom kingdom to help peach from bowsers take over.
They could've just had Charles Martinet tone down the Mario voice and still have the mario-isms. Just like the French one which is a PERFECT in between for a movie . Hollywood just uses movie stars for animation and it sucks. Mario's voice is so iconic, and we just get some plainass American voice
I think his voice is alright we haven't heard much yet I rewatched the trailer a few times I can kinda hear a Brooklyn, NY accent very vague but it's there
1:42 Well no the 2023 film is not the first one in fact the very first movie film title Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! or Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! is a 1986 Japanese anime adventure comedy film. But never came out to the US.
I thought this trailer was amazing I really hope to see more at the game awards if that makes sense if they show it! I'm watching this on Day 1! BTW if you haven't heard of Keegan Michael key before watch whose line he's hysterical! I think Chris Pratt did fine in this trailer but I NEED to hear more of it please! Everyone else did great but again I need to hear the rest of the cast as well!
There's going to be more trailers for this movie that's what they said and I definitely can't wait and I definitely can't wait to watch this I wish it was coming out this year I'm definitely taking my niece to go see this she loves Mario
For all who are still upset on Chris Pratt voicing Mario keep this in mind that this is still a movie and they wanted lots of folks who never play video games to go see the film and for that you need star power as in the 1979 Superman The Movie. Also I'm 100% okay with Chris Pratt voicing Mario as I grew up seeing and playing Mario games as far back as Donkey Kong in 1981 and saw ton of voice actors playing Mario other than Charles Martinet. Peter Cullen - 1983 Lou Albano - 1989 Walker Boone - 1990 Marc Graue - 1994
Hey chi man, huge fan of your channel. This is a good take on the Mario trailer, the general consensus is Chris Pratt just doesn't seem like a good fit... On an unrelated note, will you make a video of the recent cancellation of the Stadia service? Your videos bashing the Stadia when it was new was what initially brought your channel to my attention 😅
I honestly don't really care how bad the voice sounds Cooper sounds great jet black did a great job he sounds really good but Mario I honestly don't care I'm going to go and watch this I'm going to support this and hopefully they make a part two next year I'm going right to the theaters
Supposedly Bowser has some musical scenes so don’t know how you’d feel like about that. Personally I don’t like Musicals at all but I hope it works for Bowser.
The thing with the Italian accent makes me sad because my moms side came to the USA from Italy in the 90s and they all love Mario specifically because of his over the top Italian voice. I like the Mario cartoon voice too honestly, but if the whole point is to avoid that, then that blows man
people are too hard on seth rogan, he has done serious roles before and didn't do a bad job. his portrayal of steve wozniak in the 2015 steve jobs movie was pretty good.
If the writing is tight, the voice acting will be fine. Chris Pratt doesn’t sound like Chris Pratt either. He sounds like a cartoon version of a jolly Brooklyn Italian. If one didn’t know that was Chris Pratt, only hardcore Pratt fans, if there are any, would be the ones to pick him out. The protagonist in a film that costs this much probably needs to be a vessel, not a character. Especially since there’s a lot of characters to go around. I mean, the main character might need to be a little vanilla, so everyone can follow.
yeah chris pratts new york lou albana impression is pretty distracting, wish they wouldve gotten the original guy but it is how it is i think this will be a lot of fun
I never understood why people have issues with Chris Pratt being the voice actor. Has anyone watch the Super Mario Bros Super show? Chris Pratt is a very good voice.
I still can’t get excited for this movie because of Illumination’s *atrocious* track record. But I will say, it looks better than I thought it would. I especially liked Bowser here. But overall, I need to see more before I can say my skepticism is gone.
Okay, let’s be real. Did we get the original voice of Mario in the Super Mario Bros Super Show? NO. Did we get the original voice of Mario in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3? NO. Did we get the original voice of Mario in Super Mario World (the animated series)? NO. And what about the original Super Mario Bros movie (that everyone heated because no one understand what is going), did we get the original voice of Mario? No. So, let me explain this in sentence, IN THE SHOWS WE DON’T HAVE THE ORIGINAL VOICE OF MARIO. SO WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WITH CHRIS PRATT. The story tells that Mario was born in Brooklyn along side with his brother. The brothers LIVES IN US. If they were Italian, they would live in Italy, but we heard Mario and Luigi, they lived in Brooklyn. So what’s the problem with Chris Pratt’s voice actin? Let the man live his dream with his idol just like the other actors from the tv shows.
The problem is that his voice doesn't fit the character at all. The other voices that you mentioned at least fit Mario's character, this one doesn't, it doesn't fit Mario. At least not to me.
@@cbfranco3307 just like the other shows that I mention huh? Remember, we are talking about movies and tv shows, not the games, they are different. Chris Pratt is doing a great job. You should appreciate him, because he wants to become just like his idol.
@@armandorentaramos4648 ...Did you even read what I said? The other voices from the shows you mentioned FIT Mario, Chris's voice doesn't. When the heck did I say "his voice bad cuz not sound like games"? Also, "you should appreciate him because to become just like his idol"... that can be said about a TON of voice actors, also, I NEVER insulted Chris Pratt, I just don't like the voice he is doing for Mario because it doesn't fit the character.
@@cbfranco3307 that because it’s not about the game, it’s about the movie. Charles Martinet the Legend only voices Mario on video games, while the movies and tv shows can produce by other voice actors.
@@armandorentaramos4648 You should've said Charles Martinet's Mario voice instead of "original" Mario voice. Because these voice actors you mentioned who voices Mario in these cartoons did it before Charles Martinet. So Charles Martinet is not the original voice actor for Mario. The way you worded, you made it sound like Charles Martinet voices Mario before the likes of Captain Lou Albano and Walker Boone, which of course it's not true.
