The SUPERNATURAL Prequel Premise Is DEEPLY FLAWED. [Dissecting THE WINCHESTERS and Continuity.]

You pointed out exactly why this show can't be good. I think the CW was always the wrong place for a show like Supernatural to reach it's full potential. A better show would have been Bobby's story with him and Rufus hunting. This would also show how Sam and Dean spent so much more time with Bobby explaining why they love him so much.

Me after watching a couple of episodes of The Winchesters: ..... *What am I SUPPOSED TO DO?!??!* _starts the next episode_ *SON OF A BITCH* For real. I don't think I've ever been so mad at a TV show.

Amazon Prime or Netflix should have picked it up. A John Winchester Show could have gone on for an easy 5 seasons. It would have a darker tone, been more like Season 1 of Supernstural with the whole “monster of the week” vibe since he’s searching for answers about what is out there. It could have that Punisher type vibe since we know he became an obsessed drunk with an “they all must die” attitude. Show John pounding a beer, going super dark and torturing a Vamp in a hotel room, Bobby and Rufus show up out of thin air because they are there on a case hunting a vamp hive, shit gets a little sketchy between the duo and John, and finally they start giving John the 411 when his anti hero character ends up saving Bobby and Rufus when they get cornered in the hive. Easy. They don’t agree with his methods but he’s proven himself capable so, they try to help him out throughout the show. Run ins with Jos Dad, who buddy’s up to him after hearing Johns story, somewhere in the 3rd season he meets Adam’s mom. To make it all concise, throw in some random phone calls in episodes where he’s calling Dean to make sure he and Sam are safe or close the episode with him going back to pick them up. Find some kids to play the brothers from time to time to show that dynamic. End the show around the time Dean first starts hunting with him. Or And if good enough, take it in to their teen years.

I felt the show did a 'Jump the shark' in regards to it continuing for so long. So to see a prequel is just like jumping the shark, then resurrecting the shark to jump it again. Great job on the research!

I think your idea of a prequel starring John as he learns about hunting would have been great or they could have made a sequel about Sam's son being a hunter & Sam & Dean could pop down from Heaven too help on his cases ? Sounds better than changing all of Supernatural history too make this show & why would just Dean be curious about his parents woundnt Sam want too know also especially since he was too young too rember his Mom ? Best part of the whole 1 st episode was seeing Dean in the ending driving away in Baby ! Sorry Jensen I adore you but I'm passing on this show !

When kripke was there, season 1-5 was stellar. Really good stuff for cable. When he left it got shit. Which isn't surprising, as kripke is doing the boys. Arguably one of the greatest TV series ever made. So far.

They’ll erase his memories. Kind of lame going in knowing that you have to resolve any continuity errors with a mind wipe.

They scraped the entire way the brother's parents met... like John never knew he was a Legacy or that Mary was a hunter. Mary hid that dark part of herself from him. This show should have just been about Mary, and John shouldn't have been involved at all.

Nobody's saying Drake Rodger is not a very pretty boy but now way in hell does he grow up to be Jeffery Dean Morgan. I can only assume the last episode of this series (which will probably be the season one finale) will involve mass memory wipe/manipulation and industrial levels of cosmetic surgery. They have passed up on so many potentially amazing possible spin off shows (I really wanted a Castiel and Meg (Rachel Miner variety) team up) I can't believe this is the one they finally landed on.

I theorize that they didn't want to create another male focused show and that's why they decided to put Mary as the center. I'm getting girl power and forced diversity vibes.

I was pretty excited to hear a new Supernatural spin off was coming. Didn't know anything about it.. Then was told to look up the trailer and my excitement vanished. Will probably watch it some time but not gonna put any effort into watching it. Wait for it to be a streaming service if it ever is. Definitely would watch something about John after Marys death. Sounds more interesting to me

The actress who played Mary in the pilot is Samantha Smith, which is why she played her again in season 12-14, because the younger actress would have been too young and she played her when she died

It looks more like a Buffy The Vampire Slayer knock off than a Supernatural tie in. There are some factors that might save it, there's nothing saying this isn't an alternate take and all this happens before Chuck destroyed them all and there's nothing saying Jack didn't reset everything including those alternate worlds after he became the new God. As far as the screw up in Supernatural there's the possibility that John had a stepfather after his dad went missing, by 73 and having been to war himself he might've actually come to see his stepfather as his dad. Little things like that can be written off.....That said, this show..... CW has been spent on quality for some time now.

After seing the pilot and yeah, it was as we and many feared. Worse than erasing canon, it was boring.

I get a feeling i look at a live action show of sccoby doo, not the winchesters, i think it will fail, but i will give it 1 or 2 episodes more and see if the grows, or not..

Also don't forget Jack became the new God and he probably fixed all the other Earths as well and Dean could easily narrate the Winchesters after defeating Chuck between episodes 19 and 20.

You're totally right!!! This new show is a dumpster fire, and they're running on empty. What they need to do is cut their losses and move on.

Yeah I'm like you I'm wondering if the prequel serious takes place in an alternate timeline clearly my favorite episodes of Supernatural are when Sam and Dean are traveling in time meeting Thier Parents and I noticed in those two episodes John does not know Mary is a hunter when they are dating nor does he have the knowledge the world is full of ghosts and monsters etc. But I did hear that they're going to explain the timeline or the Canon of this Series in episode 13.

They have to completely change the story set in seasons 1-5 (the ONLY legitimate seasons) to make this show exist...and it sucks....

You make a lot of good points that didn't occur to me. It's not a bad show on its own but the fact it breaks so much canon disappoints me and the fact it's produced by jensen, REALLY disappoints me.

Supernatural was my favorite show. I knew what was great about the show and I knew where and what the flaws were, but when you invest yourself into a show from the very begining(yes I watched the pilot and every episode to the end as they aired)only to have this prequel that relates to the genesis of the story and to miss key elements, I just cant watch. I may had been able to bare with the continuity issues if Jared Pedalecki was involved but he wasnt. Season 15 left me really bummed and yeah there was some shitty writing but I blame covid for what we got as the final episodes, but there is nobody to blame for this lame attempt to spin off Supernatural. The first attempt was horrendous and the prequal at least has the familiar names but no one can say this was a better option than Wayward Sisters would of been.

They're an easy fix for all the plotholes. For one Dean telling Mary how she met John. Mary couldn't easily just told Dean that because he was a kid at the time at didn't wanna tell him about demons and monsters. Or Angels whiped their memories and gave they new memories. We just have to wait and see.

I watched the first episode and half the second episode then I turned it off. Supernatural is my favorite show of all time and I just can't allow a hackneyed spin off to ruin it. Jensen Ackles should be ashamed of himself.

This video seems to be more about how Supernatural got away with breaking continuity, and will continue to do so in the Winchesters. Even if you have not seen it. Not that you are wrong. But there are plenty of other reasons to criticize the Winchesters, and I only I watched E1. For instance. Yes, John was portrayed as "sweet" every time the brothers went back in time, which John continues to be in Winchesters. But John was also an alpha male in Supernatural. How did that happen? Was that ONLY a result of Mary's death? In Supernatural, Mary was also very sweet...although independent and she did enjoy killing demons. In Winchester, Mary was leading the group. Her way or the highway. Mary from the Winchesters would not have been so alpha. Hell, she sounded like Dean (who sounded like his Dad). John's Mom was yelling at her grown son for not calling her for a week. Was she worried that he was going to be hurt in Kansas? After a two year tour in Vietnam? I appreciate the comparison they were making about John and Mary looking for her Dad in Winchesters vs Dean and Sam looking for their Dad. Its true that John should not have know about demons until Mary was dead. Nor should either of them know about the men of letters. Instead of filling in gaps with a story, they are creating stories that break canon , and hoping fans wont care . Pug's idea that the real gap is ...what did John do after the fire? How did he raise the boys? ....its simultaneously obvious and brilliant. Hopefully, they will take the writing more seriously.

The pilot was bad and not in a good way. The script was all over the place. Worst yet here we are looking for our missing dad again give me a break. This felt like a poor mans Scooby-Doo cartoon ripoff. It's a perfect fit for modern CW.

I’m only a little over one episode in and so far my main complaint is that the girl who plays Mary acts EXACTLY like Claire Novak

There are actually many things they can do An alternate reality like other worlds chuck destroys A heaven thing, where Dean looks at a perfect version of thire relationship Dean is driving around writing notes as an invisible man from heaven visiting a problem down on earth where a monster changed the timeline - and yeah maybe also the posh dean is looking up HIS dads version of events in the other world, IDK but i'm sure they have an idea So far, It's not perfect but surprisingly not terrible and they kept some vibe of the supernatural original show I'd say you are right though - It should have been Johns life raising the kids AFTER marry died.

My opinion, the prequel sucks. This is not the way that story began. However when it comes to performances, I give the dude who played John on this show an 9/10 rating. He's good & in some scenes especially the awkward ones, he resembles Sam a lot 😂 but that's all I can say good about it. I would've waited at least 5 years before making any kinda prequel or spin off. Supernatural is still fresh in people's minds. This was too soon.

It's not a perfect show but it's still one of my favorites. The writers definitely didn't watch every episode but I imagine after 300 episodes it got to be difficult to come up with something new. The only problem with the show is the constant one upping of big bads that they had to fight. It made things ridiculous at the end when they had to kill God himself. I do think the spin off looks dumb but I'll give it a watch and see what happens.

I feel like this will be a setting of chapters in John's life. I've got a good feeling that this first season will be the opening to certain topics and after all of it John will get his memory wiped and the story will continue. Next season I feel like it'll pick up where marry died and he begun his journal. While this is only a theory I feel like maybe it could happen as they''ve not mentioned any ideas for a Season 2 so if they wanted to I feel like this is the best route

I imagine it could still work as an alternate universe, since it could be assumed that when Jack brought everyone back. He could have restored the alternate universes as well.

Gotta say I have watched supernatural since season 2 and the year season 5 came out I was 9 or 10 but with all honesty even back then I myself felt like supernatural should've ended with season 5 plus that's when Kripke left and other writers took over as showrunner .

I agree with just about everything but in my opinion John Winchester, in many ways, is one of the best hunters on Supernatural.. His legacy lives on long after death, He is a hero just isn't exactly father of the year. Countless characters have helped Sam and Dean purely because of who their dad was. You can also make this argument about heroes in the MCU or DC universe, they are flawed characters but are heroes. Even Captain America the boy scout still does questionable things. Overall please don't take this as being toxic it's just my opinion, this video was great and well thought out, and for that it gets a LIKE & a SUB 🔔. :)

Plus you could view it as that if there's any episodes of the original Supernatural that Jensen or Jared did not like they might make spin-offs to fix them. We all know that Jensen voiced his opinion from the boys interview that he did not like the supernatural ending that he even believed that Dean deserved a better conclusion. Plus this doesn't include the multiplications that Jensen and his wife from One Tree Hill has mentioned how they want to and are very interested in doing a revive of Supernatural. Even his wife mentioned how f***** up of course I'm paraphrasing how messed up it was that the CW canceled the Wayward sister spin-off she even said at the New York City Comic Con that wayward sisters should have been the spin-off before the Winchester's. I mean think about it all of the cast members from the Sharon Mills house they all disappeared after the spin-off was canceled by The CW... plus not ones that Castiel ever explained what happened to Jimmy Novak's daughter after she left the show to do detective Pikachu..

I don’t know if anyone else here has seen it, but the show was in an alternate reality. I’m not here to defend the show because it was really crappy and the final episode was nonsensical garbage. But by the end that’s how they explained that it doesn’t break the original story. The show feels like another Riverdale. It’s interesting enough on its own but it’s very silly. If you watch it be ready to drink and make fun of it. It’s really bad. It doesn’t even have much fan service with old characters so it’s not even good nostalgia bait. The characters should have been used in a stand alone show. But it is what it is. Watch at your own risk.

I wouldn't say that it's dead it's just a different approach according to Jensen ankles at the New York City Comic Con he said that he wanted to do a different approach about the legacy of John and Mary Winchester.. plus think about it every time that Sam and Dean talked about their father to other people they always mention his military background the version of young John that we saw in Supernatural it wasn't even in the military yet, and if he was he did not act like a military person he act too geeky too square nothing like Jeffrey Dean Morgan..

IT was a Brilliant Show especially the first like 10-11 Seasons The first 7 or so seasons was GREAT how it all tied in together from the very first episode of the very first season

It never ceases to amaze me that Supernatural got 15 seasons! I remember checking out after season 5 and every time I'd hear about the show again it was some whacky shark jumpy shenanigans like meta episodes or a Scooby Doo crossover. Maybe that's the key to longevity, just go batshit crazy and keep trying to top the last crazy thing you did.

I enjoyed “Supernatural”, it was entertaining. However, “The Winchesters” I am not enjoying. This is a period piece, “1970’s”. It is crap! Woke Hollywood is written all over it. John Winchester, is a whiny wimpy man, who is now as a supporting character to Mary. Mary is a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” knock off, but even without superhuman power, she is pretty strong considering she beat the crap out of demons. Even though in “Supernatural”, the male characters had a struggle fighting them. Don’t get me wrong, Mary was bada$$ in “Supernatural”, but she was “still” a woman, having the strength of a woman. Then there is their Scooby gang, mostly all women of course, and all different races. The only other guy is a very flamboyant gay man. This whole set up is incorrect for that time period. As a gay man growing up in the “70’s”, if you were gay, especially flamboyantly gay, there is no way straight guys hung out with you, especially if they did not know you. The team would work if it was set in present day, but no way this group of different races and a gay man would get together in the “70’s”.

I think maybe Dean is telling the story of how he imagined his parents life when he was a kid

I think this prequel is a great idea and jensen confirmed they arent throwing away 15 years of canon. He said it will fit into the canon in a way we might not expect which makes me think its not just a simple mind wipe.

Look I'm a Supernatural fan too. I've watched all 15 seasons. Me and my family loved it. And I don't think Supernatural is able to have a cannon, like Star Wars. Because it had God, Lucifer and how many times did Sam and Dean return from the dead? Anything goes! That why I love it. The new show is just starting, we need to get to know the characters first, before they can create character humor like in Supernatural. Lastly, the way I see it. It's not my show. There's nothing wrong putting fan input. But I had nothing to do with directing the show. I really have no say in what they do. And my only small part in it is just watch the show. And I think you're judging it too quickly.

It was also clear in tbe pilot that Mary winchester had no idea about the supernatural.... but they of course changed that. They changed practically everything throughout the course of the show.

Maybe the reason why "it's always been a mystery" is because the pieces don't all add up. As you pointed out.
