Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

The 9,3 x 62 is actually pretty common here in Germany. If somebody is interested in getting a rifle in that caliber, I just looked through an online store and they have rifles from Antonio Zolli, Blaser, Browning, Haenel, Mauser, Merkel Helix, Sako, Sauer, Steyr and Tikka. Ammunition is available from Barnes, Blaser, Brenneke, Geco, Hornady, Norma, RWS, Sako and Sellier & Bellot. There are probably some more, that was just that one store.

Really great and popular caliber in Finland and Scandinavia. More or less becoming new standard for big game like Moose and Bear. At the moment, our moose hunting group statistics are around 50% / 308 ; 40% / 9,3x62 ; the last 10% divides between 6,5 x 55 swede and 30-06. 9,3x62 handles bush way better than 6,5 and .30 calibers, which is important here in Finland because of dense forests. Really thankful for you Ron to examine these European calibers also, and I can't wait to see you on range with this caliber. BTW, at least here in Finland Brownings are sold chambered for this caliber, so you might find them from states too, if you ask for it...
@stefflus08
@stefflus08 2 года назад
Yeah, the 9.3x62 as well as 45/70 and it's cousins are very popular for Moose by dog handlers in Norway and probably the neighboring countries. Short range favors large caliber and slow speed unless you want to marinate the entire animal in Lead. It is getting exceedingly expensive per shot, however. Pushing $10 per shot.
@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 2 года назад
I’m always concerned when someone says they need a particular caliber because of “dense forest” or “thick brush”. This tells me that they are taking shots they shouldn’t be taking. If your bullet has to go through brush and/or dense coverage of any kind it means you don’t have a clear shot. This is how hunters accidentally shoot other hunters, shoot the wrong animal or only wound the animal and then have to track it sometimes for miles. You should only shoot when you have a clear shot meaning your bullet isn’t going through anything on its way to the animal.
@stefflus08
@stefflus08 2 года назад
@@prepperjonpnw6482 Absolutely. But for follow-up shots avoiding brush is out the window, and then you'd want it. It is most popular with dog handlers that track wounded animals, either in their own team or on assignment for the county.
@tuomaslassheikki6007
@tuomaslassheikki6007 2 года назад
@@prepperjonpnw6482 I don't know where you hunt, but here in Scandinavia we hunt a lot with dogs. Moose usually park themselves in to very thick bush. Shooting distances are commonly as short as with bow hunting 10-50 m. Of course we always try to find a clear spot for the shot, but you don't always have have many opportunities, when you need to observe where your dog is, what type of moose you have and etc. And as Steffen said, follow-ups might be going thru some heavy bush. Also, due to our dense moose population, we often track traffic wounded animals, and they don't ever park in the open. When Ron speaks of standard ranges of 200 yd, it sounds a bit bit odd for us, since 90% percent shots are taken in the range of 25 - 100 yd here. I do have taken one moose with 9,3x62 from 250...300 range, but I don't do that if I don't have to. But you are right in what you are saying, you should never shoot through bush, but if it happens in a fast situation, heavier bullet like 9,3 improves the situation...

Fun fact: Lothar Walther made a run of M1 Garand barrels in 9.3x62. If I remember correctly, you can actually stuff eight rounds of 9.3 in the M1 clip. So if you want the ultimate dangerous game blaster, you can have it with a ping. I was always tempted, but never picked one up. Anyway, 9.3x62 is a great cartridge that goes underappreciated today.

Roughly 95% the frontal area, velocity and bullet weight of a .375 H&H (comparing the standard 286 grain 9.3 to the 300 grain .375). The 9.3 produces roughly 88% the muzzle energy (personal opinion: energy is an overrated metric when discussing terminal performance). The 9.3 does so in a lighter, shorter, package that produces about 25-30 percent less recoil and offers 2 additional rounds. A few years back, I shot a buffalo that weighed about 1 ton on the hoof and the 9.3 dropped it in its tracks. Phil Shoemaker has written on this cartridge. As a 9.3 owner, I can say that buying one over a .375 is one of the best decisions I have ever made. There is no noted difference in effect when compared to the .375 (which is about 5% more powerful) and the 9.3 offers all the aforementioned benefits.

I know many hunters use it and like it... but I think they should do some research on the details on how and why game dies and what actually causes the most efficient kind of trauma. If they did, they'd prefer smaller faster calibers that are simpler to shoot and provide more margin for error.

I am Swedish I have 9.3x62 Merkel SR1. Shoot many wild boars with it. Favorite weapon and caliber when I'm a dog handler. 358 Norma Magnum Husqvarna 1651 with Custom stock. Really good effect on both wild boar and moose settles almost immediately in the bang. I charge myself with Speer Hotcore 17 Grams in 9.3x62 358 Norma Magnum I like Woodleigh PP it is quite hard fits 358 Norma Magnum well. I've had 338 win loaded a little different there stuck for Hornady Interbond. But got 358 Norma Magnum and likes the caliber. I rarely shoot at anything wild over 200 meters if it has not been damaged ore hurt before. I mostly hunt myself with dogs and search for injured game, mostly moose and wild boar. Of course I am capable of shooting at longer distances, but I want the animal to lie down immediately and die as quickly and painlessly as possible and gently. I choose coarser calibers for that reason. I also have 7 mm RM drive with swift scirocco 2 150 grains there. Given rifle when I sit or wake hunt or when I hunt deer or wild boar, fox and badger also get a slap if they get there. Then I also like my 300 win mag. There I drive Lapua Naturalis 170 gr Long Range or 180 granins generation 1. Other genres are not as good in the effect on the game iaf tumbles around sometimes as well. I have around 100 bullets left there of Lapua Naturalis Gen 1. Worse effect on the game, I get with big wild boar straight in the bow blade no problems at all and no search is needed. So this is a good channel if you like caliber and shooting 👍👍

I teach ballistics at the Professional Hunting School in East Cape Province in South Africa. (I live near Seattle, WA.) I only have three 9.3x62 rifles but am always looking for more. This video is 'letting the cat out of the bag' of the unique value of the 9.3x62 (or 9.3x74R in double rifles). I find it can do ANYTHING a .375H&H can with a lighter rifle and less recoil. The secret (just like the .30-'06 cartridge) is to pick the right weight/form bullet for the job. Kevin 'Doctari' Roberts (a large animal vet) has one with 650+ successful Cape Buffalo kills to the rifle. Proper shot placement is the key. Just like the flexibility of the .30-'06, the 9.3x62 cartridge can use 200, 235, 250, 270, 275, 286, 300, and 320 gn bullets. Match the bullet to the job! I normally carry the 286 round nose in the chamber and a 250 or 235 gn spitzer in the magazine in case of a close up surprise (and just chuck it out if I need a longer shot at plains game). In a pinch the 9.3x62 can be made from .30-'06 brass!

I've been using a 9.3x62 continually since the early 1970's using RWS fodder. It's a brilliant cartridge for just about anything. I've shot quite a few small Muntjac deer with it and it does surprisingly little meat damage given the diminutive size of the animal and the scale of the bullet. In Africa it is far better than the 375 as it has a comparativly low recoil, even in a light 8lb rifle with a 20 inch barrel, so flinching is reduced and accurate shot placement makes a massive difference. It drops most things right on the spot where it was shot. I highly recommend it and I'll never be without one in my collection.

I found a 1903 Springfield that had been sporterized. The bore was badly pitted but the price was right. I first thought to make it a 338-06, but decided the pitting may not clean up. Then I considered the 35 Whelen but on closer examination I noticed a slight bit of pitting in the area of the shoulder/neck junction. The 9.3x62mmMauser looked like just the ticket, so I sent the barreled action to JES Reboring. It now has a 3-groove, cut- rifling bore. I bought a pile of Prvi Partizan(PPU) ammo, brass, and 286gr bullets. It shoots 1¼-1¾" groups at 100yrds from the bench using a Williams receiver sight and a 3/32" Lyman bead up front.

That's cool and all, but 2300-2450 is the sweet spot for a 285/286 gr bullet, and there is certainly no wild game in North America that could stand up to it.

I shoot the Speer hot cors for blinkers and save the good stuff for hunting. IMR 4064, RL16 and Varget are my go to powders for reloads. The difference of .0004 case head diameter is negligible when resizing and forming brass. You can easily reform from 30-06, 35 Whelan for a less expensive option, simply run it through your 9.3x62 resizing die and trim to length. Also, this caliber seems to shoot to the same point of aim with the same bullet weights. Very forgiving and easy to load for. Hope this info helps and any questions dont hesitate to ask

After more and less just 30-06 spr. use for almost 30 years I went over to 9,3x62. Mainly because of change in hunting-grounds, more dense vegetation and branches. This cartrige is the Ace of aces for hunt, within 300 meters, on medium size game up to Moose. I use 232 - 250 (V0=800-810 m/s) grains bullets, both bonded and copper and it just works. For stalking, high stand or postering doesnt matter. And you can finde Browning BAR chamberd in this round. And great video Ron, as allways. I hope you come over to Scandinavia for hunting one day:) Greetings BM

That old 30-06 seems to come up just about every time you talk about caliber and penetration. That cartridge will always be a favorite for many people. You know I have shot a lot of the old 8mm mauser cartridge and it's not all that bad either.

Glad to see someone finally did a proper video on a fantastic cartridge. This along with the 45-70 have been my go to cartridges for years. It’s a good shooter in the Mauser M12 All Weather. As far as US manufacturer go Ruger has been chambering it on and off for 10 or more years. The most reasonable price for ammo comes from PPU and it’s decent made. Thanks for the video.

It is also pretty common here in Finland. Perfect for moose, bear and wild boar, even white tail with the right bullet. Love it, soft kick. Effective and with the right bullet really accurate all the way to +200m. Works well with shorter barrels. Don't quote me on this but i believe it became common here because during the wars against russia Finland bought a lot of weapons from germany and it was noticed by hunters as well.

30ish years ago I read about the development of the 375 H&H… the 9.3x62 was pivotal in the 375 design… as the land and groove diameter of the 9.3 is “0.375,” the British were using cordite which is temperature sensitive lending to the long sloped neck to ease in manufacture and still ejecting cases in hot conditions which generates pressure spikes. The 375 was designed to do a bit more than the 9.3 and be the king of the medium bores… and the rest as they say is history… kudos to the author I learned from yet forgotten his name

Seems like it would be a good deer cartridge. I knew a guy back in the mists of time that used a 416 Remington or something similar in size and power on deer. I can't remember exactly as the 416 doesn't sound right but it was something like that. I remember him saying it would shoot through a 2' tree with a 400 grain bullet. I teased him about using a cannon for deer but that's all I can remember.

The cool thing about the 9,3 besides cycling cartridges of standard 30-06ish body diameter (this having good magazine capacity) is the fact that the recoil is so much nicer than the 375 that you can get away with a lighter and more handy rifle. It just might be the ultimate DGR cartridge if you look at the combination of power and recoil - allowing for well placed shots.

My Kudu fell at 280 yards and the bullet entered his chest straight on and stopped 3/4 of the way back along his spine. Never heard of it until my gunsmith told me about the caliber. Hey Ron. An excellent review as usual. Maybe your american viewers do not know and havent seen this caliber in use. But let me tell you that in Europe, and more precisely in France where I live and hunt, this cartridge is just the perfect caliber for driven hunts (wild boar and red stag). I used the French commercial 9.3x62 "Sologne GPA", a leadfree fragmentation ogive and it swiflty delivers the last judgment to any big game that it hits. It produces between 4500 and 5200 joules, and with the right projectile it is the ultimate caliber to tame adrenalin-filled wild boar's enthousiasm, when the dogs are running behind them. Rws also makes good reloads. Even Hornady loads this cartridge in their european international hunter line. Used it in Turkey as well against giant Sus scrofa Attila wildboars. Want to shoot far ? That you can do with Sax ammunition (german brand). They load light for caliber ogives (around 200 grains), that will fly at an astonishing 900 m/s and have an optimal shooting distance of 200 meters at least without scope adjustment. It stands right in between a 35 Whelen and a 375 HH magnum cartridge, but it is more versatile a caliber than those 2. We do also have the 9.3x62 chambered in semi auto rifles (Browning Bars, winchester SXR and Benelli Argo for instance), straightpulls, and of course your regular bolt action (you mentionned tikka, sako, and others. I have it in a Mauser k98 action, but everysingle european weapon maker Chambers it, and Blaser or Merkel sell thousands of them). It also exists in over/under or side by side express rifles (proposed by all the italian makers, and french makers like Chapuis or Verney caron), in a slighlty longer rimmed cartridge : 9.3x74 R. Almost the same balistics and the exact same bullets. It is used by the beaters who drive the dogs, for obvious security reasons (you can break open your rifle when running around in the woods). 9.3 packs a whole lot of punch, the recoil is manageable during the hunting action, and ammo is easily available and very simple to handload (I load GPA, and also Barnes TSX ogives, and man...that kills). Thanks Ron for highlighting our venerable 9.3 allround cartridge !!

I’ve used the 9.3 x 62 and the 9.3 x 64 in Erongo Mountains in Namibia and whilst the former is quite something the latter is awesome right there with the 375 H&H

I’ve used the brenneke and the Holland and found the Holland to be more versatile and with the 350 grain bullet the Holland beats the 9.3 brenneke or x64 every time. The 9.3 x 64 is not not that well balanced and has a much higher felt recoil .

I appreciate the details. There’s a lot of basic info out there but I like seeing BC, SD, powder charges and other details like these. Great video.

I have a 9,3x62. I like it because it's not so destructive. It is heavy hitting with a good knock down effect without making jelly of the meat like the faster cartridges like the 30-06. It's a great compliment to my 6,5x55 Swe mauser that I use for mid size game. I had the privilege to take my first bull moose with the 9,3. I live in Sweden. Love your channel. Please keep up the good work!

I've read lots about the 9.3x62 and I've seen a few rifles chambered for it to. I just about bought a Mauser 98 in 9.3x62 a few years ago and I kicked myself for not doing it after I studied up on it more.

It'd be quite interesting to a lot of your viewers if some time you did a video on another 9.3......the 9.3 X 64n Brenneke. That is a serious round om par with the 375 all day long.

Ron, great video. Don't forget the 338-06 A-Square cartridge. I load my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 338-06 A-Square with Nosler's 210 grain Partition bullets. Using inexpensive 30-06 Springfield brass with the need for fireforming. My rifle also shoots Nosler's 250 grain Partition bullets very well. Talk about serious energy too. Fits between the 30-06 Springfield and 35 Whelen.

I have looked at the Sauer rifles chambered in this cartridge but they’re fairly hard to locate here in the states. But during ammo shortage here, the European metric cartridges (9.3x62, 6.5x55, and 7x64) all seemed to have better availability and less price gouging from what I observed.
