The Tale Of Badge is very dark. The creature is a badger, thus the title. It's interesting that the grandmother does anything to help her granddaughter. It's really rare for an adult or in any sense a family relative to help our "heroes".
I thought it was a mostly good episode. Badge was a great villain, the makeup for him looked honestly wonderful for the show's budget, the grandmother Willie was very likable, and I also LOVED the Irish/ Celtic music heard throughout it, especially Badge's creepy theme music and the lovely little tune that plays as Gwen reads Willie's book and learns about the history of her family.
I'm with you on this one. The word Setterwind was used way too much lol. I did love the way Badge looked. I've seen worse makeup in mid budget horror movies, so it was extra impressive considering it was just a Canadian kids TV show.
Yes we're back. This is what i said about it: "Airing wise, we end on a good one. It has a similar feel to other large scale ones and has some of the same pros and cons. They don’t quite explain everything, such as what Badge even if and why he wants this Setterwind magic beyond just hanging Grandma I guess. He doesn’t exactly do a lot either as far as threats go. We do get enough info in some places at least, and the way Badge’s name ties into the music thing is clever. We get more Irish stuff here and it’s done better than in Jake and the Lerchaun as it’s less over the top. Badge himself is fun with his actor really going for it, and the makeup i9s pretty good despite how goofy it looks at least. Good set design and music as well. It ramps up decently as Gwen finds out about her heritage, showing off that big scale well. The end even says she still has more to learn about magic, which kind of feeds the imagination. Gwen is likable with her insecurities, even if it’s mostly caused by the brother being a dick. Nothing that deep is done with her but it ends in a satisfying way. It feels like they could have more, it just feels like it’s missing an extra something to push it over the edge. Even with that, there’s not too much hugely wrong here and it was a fun time. It could have done more, and it’s no Night Shift (why were these swapped?) but it makes for a good way to end things, and it’s a fine final story for Gary."
I think Badge wanted the Setterwind magic for the same reason why Nazrac in "The Tale of the Magician's Assistant" wanted Shandu's wand, and in general why most fantasy villains want magical items: Simply to augment his own power, perhaps with the long- term goal of using it for conquest.
I remember THIS was the only episode i remember scared the crap outta me as a kid! As soon as the Badge jumped through the door way i freaked out and ran. Today i came back to face my fears and I definitely ended up loving this episode
