On this episode of The Midnight Society, I look back at season 2, episode 13 of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?": The Tale of Old Man Corcoran. Midnight Society member Kiki tells a tale about two kids who agree to play hide and seek in a graveyard to impress the other kids in their new neighborhood.

This episode is one of my favourites, I loved the twist ending. The old man was actually a good guy who unknowingly saved Jack and Kenny's life by arriving at the right time. Sissy was also trying to save them by acting hostile towards the brothers and telling them NOT to join their group. She even told Marshall that they DON'T need more people in their group but no avail

This episode felt like a classic ghost story. I loved how it played out and the twist was executed wonderfully. Aaaaaannnnd I just realized that Mikey was straight up trying to kill those boys. And the whole "As you are now" epitath is an old, old saying. It's been around much longer than TV.

The minute hide and seek in a graveyard and a supposed old gravedigger’s ghost is the premise, the “twist “ is predictable. But at the very least the atmosphere is generously eerie and the twist was fresh at the time.

Except, Sissy was trying to scare Jack and Kenny away from the cemetery that night. She wanted to save them from certain death after she learned what Marshall had in mind and that he had planned to betray their pact to never invite more children to their nightly games. It's likely that Marshall killed Sissy in a similar manner that he did to the other kids. Since she was the last to join the group, she had traces of her old personality.

That line that little girl said in the cemetery was also quoted in Stephen king's 1408. Also I remember the super soakers. Of course I didn't have a backpack one I had the super soaker 100. And needless to say one time I clocked at so many times it built up so much pressure in the spear shape tank on the back that it actually popped off. Of course I was able to resalvage it by wrapping a shitload of duct tape around it.

@JackOfAllNerdsShow
@JackOfAllNerdsShow 3 года назад
They never really get into it. I think a number of them were killed/died in the cemetery, being tricked into play the game by Marshal. Not really sure how he kills the kids, since Kenny and Jack were "rescued" by Old Man Corcoran, but I think if they had followed Marshal into the grave, they would've ended up like the others. At least that's what they imply when Sissy says she was supposed to be the last one to join the group. I definitely wish we would've learned more about the kids.

Oh them Greeks, eh? Not just screwing clouds and swans and golden showers, but playing hide and seek.... Personally I find this episode from the show the weakest and most boring, but your review made it enjoyable. Job well done! BTW, it wasn't so much of a vasectomy but a potential ritual seppuku, which I don't recommend. It never ends well. :) Plus, those epitaphs aren't wrong and that doesn't stop me from visiting and having a French pastry while remembering the dead. It is true - I have done it. Quite relaxing and I made sure NOT to sit on their earthly resting places. :) To quote Lydia - "Live people ignore the strange and usual... I myself am strange and unusual".
@JackOfAllNerdsShow
@JackOfAllNerdsShow 3 года назад
Yeah, I think I like the concept of the episode, more than the episode itself. I wish we learned more about the ghosts and how Marshal kills the kids. I guess you are just supposed to assume that if they hide in the grave with him, they die, but how? They must not get buried because Corcoran claims to have buried them all and he doesn't seem all that concerned to find more kids in the graveyard if he has found multiple dead kids there in the past.
@EmilyGloeggler7984
@EmilyGloeggler7984 3 года назад
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Actually, looking back on it, I had my own thoughts about it - you could be right that Corcoran is human but I suspected that they all were ghosts and that Corcoran killed them, so the kids could be working in tandem with Corcoran and the way the episode ends is ambiguous. He COULD let the two boys go, but they could also have ended up his next victims. In which case, it would then top Erik's "Tale of the Dark Music", but then, if Corcoran IS human and the boys live... then its an interesting ending, but its basically playing off of "Tale of the Prom Queen", just with a higher body count. I never was scared by it though, although the concept of falling into a grave and being buried alive or waking up alive in a coffin and you're several feet under ground, that IS quite horrifying and unfortunately, it does have a basis in reality, even in modern times. allthatsinteresting.com/buried-alive Anyway, great episode review and by the way, great AYAOTD discussion with Adam - I concur with you both on the top two scariest villains - Zeebo and that Demon in the Basement and Andy :P... that serial killer look. What saved that episode for me, I forgot to say, was that just because he doesn't kill his sister, you wonder - is he going to kill someone else? Yikes! I hope you guys will do another group discussion for the rest of the seasons and hopefully include more people's two cents and have a nice little "Midnight Society" discussion via Skype. BTW, another thing that you both didn't mention the Carnival Barker form of the Demon in the basement is played by the same guy as the Pinball Wizard and the little girl in "The Lonely Ghost" is Christina in "The Tale of the Dark Music". As for least scariest villain, I would say Prom Queen(?) - there is no real menace in that other than the twist of - "Oh, its a dead girl giving flowers to either herself or other dead people in the cemetery" and Goth, I thought the actor who played Goth sounded like he was just reading his lines for the first time... it was such a wasted villain. LOL I can't wait for your next episode! My husband is playing catch-up to all of these episodes and BTW, he was laughing when we got to "The Tale of the Full Moon" - that bizarre episode has once again scored another MST3k-like fan and we couldn't stop joking and laughing at the sheer stupidity of that episode, sans the creepy moment when you see the werewolf smiling that Andy/pedo/serial killer smile towards the end. I can not wait till you and possibly Adam (and hopefully more AYAOTD fans perhaps) can join in and discuss Season Four. (Oh the sheer goofiness to be had in that season - it is a joy!) That other particular "Laugh" filled episode - with the weak hillbilly cousin of Mr. J, who tries really hard to be just like him. :P ^_^ Could spend an hour easy just ripping that one to shreds MST3k style - just like Teddy and Feddy, the cousins of Freddy Krueger. :P (that's a reference to YTer Phelous' reviews of the remake Nightmare on Elm Street with Jackie Earle Haley and the bootleg Nightmare Feddy doll (yes that IS a real thing and yes, that IS what is was labelled as) - If you have a free moment, I recommend to watch that - I personally found it hilarious, but some may not - so just know that going in, if you and your friends watch it. In particular, the skit at the end by Phelous trying to recreate a weak Nightmare on Elm Street/Baywatch skit is, IMHO, hilarious) Peace, bro!

@JackOfAllNerdsShow
@JackOfAllNerdsShow Год назад
@@HlootooThunderhammer My only issue with that theory is that if the kids were all buried alive, they would simply be missing. And while, sure, their parents would eventually have a funeral with an empty casket once they gave up hope, Corcoran specifically mentions burying all those kids. So they bury the kids alive and then unbury them? And if that were the case, after so many kids died that way, I feel like people would assume there was a serial killer about suffocating children in the graveyard. I just think it is one of those stories that when you look too closely at it, it doesn't hold up. Much like a lot of stories from this show (well, tv in general I suppose).

Maybe perhaps because I live in the city of baton rouge which is one of if not the most lowly rated cities in the whole cities in the whole country's. Not just only from being a pizza delivery driver but also a Uber driver that gives me the question of what is good in baton rouge and I always tell them unless LSU is having a home game or there is an exclusive event at the river center, sometimes not even then, the answer is absolutely nothing as baton rouge is a sad crime infested hell hole
