On this episode of The Midnight Society, I look back at season 3, episode 1 of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?": The Tale of the Midnight Ride. Gary's little brother Tucker tells an initiation story to become a member of the Midnight Society. That tale is a modern retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, featuring teens being pursued by the Headless Horseman.

I always loved how this episode basically was a retelling of the original Legend Of Sleepy Hollow with the main characters of this episode in place of the original ones from the story.

Thanks! Yeah, I had bought a green screen hood for a history video I was making about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow short story and it just happened to be around the same time as this episode so it just seemed to be destiny to include the headless horseman in the review.

interesting trivia :The three main characters of this episode have the same first initials as their counterparts in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Ian: Ichabod Crane Katie: Katrina Van Tassel Brad: Brom Bones. the reason why David and Kristen were written out it was because Nathaniel Moreau (David) was terminated due to salary disputes and Rachel Blanchard (Kristen) personally called creator D.J. MacHale and said that she simply didn't want to do the show anymore.

I did know about the initials since the characters are all stand-ins for the characters from the original story, but I didn't know anything about the cast changes. That is some great trivia. Thank you for sharing!

How timely that you land on this episode just before Halloween, huh? =D Any kid who grew up watching the cartoon Arthur would instantly recognize Ichabod's voice. Mr. Ratburn! And he was in Assassin's Creed, too.

In all fairness, I did skip putting out a video in September so this one would release in October. ;-) I think I've only seen one or two episodes of Arthur, but that is very interesting. Now his over the top voice makes a lot more since if he does a lot of voice work.

Another great analysis 👌 also can we agree that the Headless Horseman would look way less intimidating if he was wearing a graphic tee instead of his usual gothic attire?

Hahaha! Yes, he rode up in a graphic tee and some board shorts, he would not have the same menace. Interestingly enough, the horseman is suppose to be a Hessian soldier, but he's never portrayed in that uniform. If you're not familiar, just do a Google image search of "Hessian soldier" and you'll think that isn't much scarier than a graphic tee. I can understand why they go with all black for tv and movie iterations of the character.

The first half of the episode, was a bit slow, for me, though the second half, came together, mixing the old story, with the new characters, situations, etc. Great review vid! Happy Halloween, Michael! #nostalgia

@@robroush2142 The original Scream is great, in fact in made my top 5 slasher movies on the podcast the other day. We will be watching our usual nostalgic picks: Hocus Pocus, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, etc.

Our dances were never decorated. A bunch of kids were always in the lobby talking. A girl would aways be crying surrounded by her friends. I'm not even exaggerating. Every. Single. Time. And inside the gym most people were hanging with friends, not dancing.

Yeah, I've heard that Paramount Plus is missing a number of the episodes from the original series, which is unfortunate. I bought seasons 1-5 on Vudu so I don't have to worry about that, but I have yet to be able to find seasons 6-7 on digital so I might have to resort to something like Paramount Plus eventually (provided they have those episodes).

Tale of Sleepy Hollow is good but I never liked this episode much Tale of Apt. 214 is really good looking forward to that review I just watched that one a few days ago

I could see why someone would not care for it. As I said, in the review, I think my love of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow skewed my opinion of the episode itself. I'm looking forward to reviewing Apartment 214.

I don't think it's a licensed song. I think it was written for the episode. If you look at the IMDB cast and crew credits there are 4 people listed for Additional Music and it is the only AYAOTD episode they worked on. I'll bet they did that dance song.
