My process is: did it taste nice? If yes ask the second question: did the sample cost me an arm and a leg? If no buy more

That's certainly a useful approach when it comes to deciding on which tea to buy! Though I would recommend also looking beyond just taste: How does the tea feel in your mouth, how does it drinking it make you feel?

Well, in sheng pu'er teas I'm usually looking for fruit notes and also a bit of archive smell like dry cellar or wardrobe and ancient wood. Honey is perfect as well. So when the tea is at least 5 years old, fruit notes becomes more prominent. Also the aftertaste is sweeter, but still juicy (like sweet fresh fruit). With older teas - like 10 years old, you can start to get these archival notes, pleasant old wood or spices which add a new dimension. With sheng pu'er 15 - 20 years old, there should definitely be some honey aroma and also archival notes stronger. And if such an old sheng pu'er keeps the fruit notes, then it is the top one. I had one from Yiwu 2004 (if I can remember) and I was surprised how much fruit notes it was offering - with all of these archival undertones. It was like a morning in an old cabin in the mountains. The sun was shining in through the opened window and the fresh mountain air made nice contrast with the smell of an old dry wood and the wardrobe in the room. On wooden table there was a jar with honey and a bowl with dried fruits. It was perfect experience. I had only 15g sample and the cost was approx. 15€ (it was about 7 years ago). Well, I have just realized that maybe I had already wrote you about that experience in the past. 😁 If some details are different, it is because I don't remember it precisely.

The few times I’ve purchased Puerh tea it’s been a disaster. I have to be out of the loosing streak now that I’ve started getting tea from Nannuoshan. I want so much to like puerh.

It can take a while to warm up to Pu'er. What kind of tea do you normally like?
