Im a audio engineering student. And one of my lecturers always tells us that, "you have to learn the rules, then you can break them".

Rules are a lot like magic spells - not using them doesn't mean much if you don't know them in the first place. But if you know them and choose not to use them then you might be onto something (or you've made your life harder with no benefit at all, but isn't that an integral part of art?).
@oscarlove4394

i've heard people say that in the art (drawing) community, in writing contexts (both storycrafting and grammar). in basically anything creative really.

And the mob of 303-plus-909-using people rose and yelled in four-to-the-floor-unison "THERE ARE NO RULES HERE, WE ARE ALL UNIQUE!"
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut 9 месяцев назад
303 and 909 have become as natural to techno as guitar and drums for rock&roll. Even if you don't build your entire track on them, there is just something to adding a familiar element that works extremely well. I don't think anyone imagines being unique for using these. That's not the point.

Yeah, so you are telling me than everybody using a piano are the same? Like Beethoven and Miles Davies and Debussy are not original? LOL.

I'm stuck at rule six. After the "use acid" step, I got into this confused state of mind where I'm unable to seriously make music. My DAW started talking to me and convinced me that this was not the right time to make music. Instructions unclear.

I'm a novice music producer but I have practiced and taught woodworking for a number of years. What you are saying about knowing and implementing "rules" is absolutely true. If you start experimenting before understanding the basics, you'll never master your craft. You may accidentally create something that looks or sounds good, but that is generally just a stroke of beginner's luck. Knowing some theory will give you the chance to analyze what just happened, and learn from it. Thanks for great content!

Hey Oscar, I just wanted to say that your videos are so good that I DONT EVEN MAKE TECHNO and I watch your content because it's thoughtful, well put together, and still applies to my more common genre (bass music in my case-- maybe someday I'll have the courage to lean into making techno). So keep up the amazing work! So much of what you say is universal and applies to any genre. Thanks for what you do!

Same "dismay" of rules as in photography (I'm not surprised). You can see how far somebody is into a certain field on how they react to the term "rules". You explained it very well, and this "explanation" video clears the one or other point (and points to some of your videos) that might've not been obvious for some people.

Love the video and the EP Oscar. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I don’t know why, but I want to start a tradition of sharing my favorite tracks here each week. My plan is to suggest one Techno and one House track every week. My Techno recommendation for this week is "[KRTM] - Popface" from the album “It Will Make The World A Better Place”. Make sure you listen to this album from start to finish, it is mad. For House it will be “Simon Doty & Artche - Who Do You Love?”. I hope some of you find a new gem for their collection and feel free to share some tracks too. Let’s grow our playlists together.

I love the original ten rules and your explanation is fun, too. I find it not only entertaining but informative and inspirational- I now use a Digitakt, TD3 and Analog Four (sometimes some Volcas) and work dawlessly- and your video made me realise I don't use polymeters very much (if at all)- but I want to add some when making techno- luckily it's very easy to change bar length on the Digitakt. The nice thing about your Ten Rules is that it applies to making music dawlessly as well as using a DAW.

The video ... is made well and points to individual videos. In the end these individual videos you refer to are the key, but... all in all: Well done 👍! A "rule" comes into account if my/you/... music is meant to be accepted by other persons. If one makes mosic for the him/herself, everyone makes what suites his/her likes. When making music even for a group of people, the music should be found good by the majority of the group, or the result may be a group of people running away or yell "BOOO" at it ... If - in general - I want to produce whatsoever, I have to accept, that I have to satisfy my customer's "taste" (even when selling amps, bikes,... food.. In case of music this means to know my "target group". If this target group loves "Industrial Techno", Melodic Techno might disappoint them... most of them will have an expectation to get an "industrial" sound, not really melodic (at least nothing with chords)... simply that, what they have heard in their past and present labeled as "Industrial Techno style". So applying "rules" makes sure, that the sound is at least similar to the general style and thus ... mostly accepted.... My interpretation 😉
