A Juan le gusta viajar y acampar. Quieres que saque la basura? Le diste el libro a Maria? Sí se lo di. Si fuera rico, me mudaría a España. Maria estuvo triste cuando llegó a la oficina. Trabajé para esa empresa por diez años. La parte interior del coche está caluroso porque hace calor afuera. Juan me dijo que no me ayudaría hasta que lo pague. Se me cayó el vaso. Pon las maletas sobre la cama. I paused the video to write these, promise I didn't cheat! 😁 How did I do?

En cuanto a #8. --Se puede decir así -Juan me dijo que no me pagará hasta que le pagara--?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Год назад
In that sentence, everything is occuring in the past so the conditional is required. It mirrors English in this regard: he told me he "would" help me. But just like in English, we could tweak the sentence to be occurring now: He told me will not help me until pay him - Me dijo que me ayudará hasta que te pague. (The last part would have to change too for tense agreement).

Tengo una duda: ¿ En realidad no existe el subjuntivo en inglés? Si yo digo : I hope you be fine. ¿ No está en subjuntivo? ¿ O está mal?. Gracias.
@jacobmparis
@jacobmparis Год назад
In English, there's past indicative "I was, he was" and past subjunctive "If I were, if he were". There's also present subjunctive "ensure that you be here on time" you would say "you are here" Those are really the only times we use subjunctive in English

This is great! I really like the diagnostic utility of this test, pointing me toward weaknesses to study. I think I made a 50% but at least now I know what to study! I wonder about number 6 tho…I thought it would be trabajaba because the work was ongoing for a time in the past…at least that’s how I have seen it explained in the past. Like if I was saying I lived somewhere for a time I would use vivía. I would appreciate a clarification! Thanks!

Another great video and you make a very good point about the DELE language testing system. Real world is a complete different ball of wax than achieving good " test results". Case in point, when I was a young NATO soldier in Germany back in the 80s I was used as a translator all the time because I had learned German quite quickly and I guess I could say I was and I still am fluent... However the Canadian military in it's infinite wisdom decided to give me a language test, a test in Kurdish of all languages to see if my brain was actually capable of learning another language. Of course the results were miserable as I had never even seen or heard the Kurdish language before, so the military deemed me incapable of learning another language, although I was used as a German/ English translator the whole four years I spent with the Canadian army in Germany.... Moral of my story , tests don't really mean anything when it comes to real world language ability. Suerte a todos desde Colombia!!

Overall, feeling pretty good! Like many others here I went with pague instead of pagara on #8, and on #9 I totally blanked on the obvious answer and went with a clumsy “Dejé caer…” Defaulted to “hacer camping”, coche, and caluroso…blame it on studying in Spain! (And yes, I’d move there in a heartbeat if I were rich. 😂)

Thanks, Paul. I stumbled across your channel last April at the very beginning of my Spanish journey. I love you teaching style, and I'm so glad I found it. As for the responses, it felt great that I got most of them correct so I know I'm making good progress. 1) A Juan, le gusta viajar y acampar. 2) Quieres que saque la basura? 3) Le diste a Maria el libro? Si, se lo di. [does it matter (i.e., sounds wrong to the listener) if I put the 'a Maria' right after the verb since this is the only way I've been able to learn to use it when needed] 4) Si yo estuviera rico, me mudaria a Espana. [error: ser vs estar] 5) Maria estaba triste cuando llego a la oficina. 6) Trabaje para la compania durante diez anos. 7) El interior del carro es caliente porque hace calor afuera. [error: ser vs estar] 8) Juan me dijo que no me ayudaria antes de que le pague. [error: didn't know 'hasta que le pagara'] 9) Se me cayo el vaso. 10) Pon las maletas sobre la cama.

Don't know the answers yet. But, so far, 1-6, 8, and 10 were easy for me. I think I got 7 right, but it could be slightly wrong. And 9 is the only one that I can't answer, not because I don't know how to conjugate the Spanish passive (which I assume is what I need to do here going off the word "accidentally"), but because I don't know the verb "drop" in Spanish. 😂 My guesses: 1. A Juan le gusta viajar y acampar. 2. ¿Quieres que saque la basura? 3. ¿Le diste el libro a Mary? Sí, se lo di. 4. Si fuera rico, me mudaría a España. 5. María estaba triste al llegar a la oficina. 6. Trabajé para esa empresa diez años. 7. El interior del carro tiene calor porque hace calor afuera. (?) 8. Juan me dijo que no me ayudaría hasta que le pagara. 9. Se me [verbo] el vaso/la copa. (?) 10. Pon las maletas en la cama. A ver cómo me fue 😁

Update: 1. ✅️ 2. ✅️ 3. ✅️ (I still kept the name as Mary in my translation, but I'm sure that doesn't matter. 😁) 4. ✅️ 5. ❓️ (I wasn't sure if I should've used "al llegar" or "cuando llegó." Would the former be correct in this context? 🤔) 6. ❓️ (Is it correct in this context not to have a preposition before "diez años?" 🤔) 7. ❌️ (ngl, the "it's hot outside/hace calor afuera" threw me off here. 😅) 8. ✅️ 9. ❌️ (To be fair, I would've gotten this one if I knew the vocabulary. 😂) 10. ✅️ Results: 6 ✅️ 2 ❓️ 2 ❌️ 6-8/10 (60-80%)

This is an interesting and efficient, quick assessment tool. I almost got them all correct. On #6 I did debate a moment between pretérito y indefinido but decided that, even though it definitely occurred in the past, it was a repetitive, prolonged situation, so I went with indefinite. I also chose por instead of durante. Is it possible that indefinite would be acceptable in this situation? Just curious.

The good I just started learning Spanish in the spring, so the mere fact that I was able to cobble together a sentence for each seems like good progress for 5 months. I got #3 perfectly correct and considering the amount of drilling I've been doing on pronouns, I'd have been disappointed if I messed it up. The bad I missed the other nine. I met the knowledge intent of #7 with an incorrect sentence For me it seems like more verbs and learning the tenses/moods. Can you suggest a logical learning order for verbs? My goal is to be a conversational traveler. Thank you for this. As others have said it's humbling yet motivating.

I got none correct but number 4 is the acid test. Take the were out and use was. E.g. If I was George Washington I would not have crossed the Delaware because it was too cold that night. Thanks to you I add it was too cold that night to my test question. I ask English speakers that question most often when a Spanish speaker who they do not respect is arround. The Spanish speaker always translates that correctly no matter how much English he or she has. The English speaker always fights the English. They first look for a group to blame for using was rather that were if they recongnize the English subjetiva. Then they play out the history in their mind if they know the day and the sociología and real politique of the crossing. Then as I do they mess up the translation. I then tell the Spanish speaker if you want English leave your baggage behind. Then I explain to the English speaker that Spanish speakers are smarter because of the nature of the language. At that point the Spanish speaker smiles and the English speaker starts talking about migration. Thus if someone else got none correct as I but respects Spanish and those who speak it they will find someone to help them.

Do you still offer tutoring/coaching services? I would love to have you as a teacher. If not is there anyone or company you would recommend?

That was tough! On the plus side I identified pretty well all the grammatical constructions, but unfortunately I just haven’t got a sufficiently immediate command of the language to be able to translate, even writing them down. Sometimes there’s no alternative to rote learning.

Wow, I got all of them correct except the second half of #8. I think I just read through it too quickly and when I saw the correct sentence I realized that I actually do know the conditional and the subjunctive imperfect it was more of an English reading comprehension error on my part. I have your wonderful videos to thank for much of my learning. I’ve been studying for 2 years solid, but speaking “on the fly” is my weakness right now. Reading/writing are my strength areas whereas listening comprehension can be fairly good depending on the speaker. Thank you! I still have so much more to learn!

Great video. I was unaware of the concept of using the singular Gusta even though we have two verbs that are pleasing. For reasons that I don’t understand, I continue to confuse diste with dijiste! Thanks so much.
