I like how Robbie sings consistently (and actually really well) while just doing random things. I also really like how he was like "fffffluff- I have kids" and then a couple minutes later swears lol. He's just so much fun to have join the crew

I really love his take on the bard as a nervous music/drama nerd - there’s just something so genuine about Dorian that breaks free of a lot of the tropes associated with the class

@@gaininsight3897 Honestly I’d be disappointed if the hag ever specially seeks Jester out for vengeance. I think it makes more sense for her to have just let it slide. It was a good honest trick, which you’d think she’d respect. And she wasn’t personally harmed, physically or in reputation. And the hag should be intelligent enough to realize that trying to retaliate would mean starting a fight that she might not be able to win.

@@kaniamia If I recall, at the Talks Machina closing out Campaign 2, Matt did say that the hag has since taken care of the spell Jester cast on her. He hinted that the hag does know about how she was tricked, but hasn't made any moves towards retaliation, so she might've decided to let it slide (for the time being). If Jester ever decided to reach out and contact the hag though...... All bets are off.

Sadly Orym had told Dorian to look after Sir Bell that night. Dorian had said that he would but then left after some prodding from Sir Bell that he wanted to "just be alone for awhile" even though Sir Bell was drunk basically in the lobby/bar of the inn.

@@weepingwalnut I think the wiki says he's actually using modified warforged, but either way sage advice (iirc) says constructs still have "life" and are affected as normal by healing spells and potions, in addition to being able to use hit dice if someone Casts mending on them

@@chalor182 ah, I just assumed it was the autognome because the UA came out before this campaign started. Also about the sage advice thing, a good number of healing spells specify they don't affect most Constructs, such as cure wounds and healing word (although autognome has a feature around both of those).

@@weepingwalnut so I decided to look this up, it was first addressed in an unearthed arcana and then later written officially in the eberron book that warforged are "living" constructs and are affected by all healing as well as the medicine skill just like a normal PC. The autognome on the other hand doesn't have a specific ruling like that that I can find so it might only be affected by the low level spells specifically listed in its exception.

I was thinking it would make sense if mending worked, but that might be a bit OP since it's a cantrip.

well, the spells effect wears off after an hour, so if he keeps this up, there will be a lot of angry people feeling douped by this oddly charming blue man

@@spshouppe honestly I’d have been super excited to see the character dynamics evolve around him actually “factory restore”ing every time he goes down. Other interesting ideas for party structure I’d love to see played out by pros like this is a party of exclusively super long lived characters with one human, and the human is actually swapped out with their child every few sessions as decades pass between arcs. The elves and dwarves and gnomes all fuck off for downtime after months of adventure, and when the finally come back they get the young able warrior that lives there and looks the same except plot twist it’s the child. Bonus points if it happens a couple times before they notice and realize their original friend died years ago and this is the grandchild now. Calling them by the wrong name, all that weirdness. It would help the larger dnd community really UNDERSTAND how strange friendships with humans would be for many common races.

@@n0xure it CAN be like that, but it seems like the setting needs to be human-centric for it to be true, ya know? In a lot of settings, humans are dominant, but they’re also usually a young race. This implies there was a point in the setting’s past where it was the first generation of humans. Gnomes, Dwarves, and Elves, the big “society races,” all live 3 to 5 times longer. There would be a weird adjustment period. The humans first domesticating dogs from wolves had a point where they didn’t know a new generation of wolves came and grew and left every year. Only the mated pair that stayed nearby generally would stay the same wolves. It obscured the age and population mechanics of wolves for an unknowable amount of time in prehistory. It wasn’t until generations of humans and wolves interacted positively that it grew to become what you described. There’s a “that part” for elves and humans too. Or rather, there COULD be, and I’d like it as a media project.

@@peterlazzari6157 i don't think there's a bonus, more like it's a cool moment of cooperation. You can do it like Matt did and take the damage from one attack and the initiative from the other. Which would make it fair for everyone.

Although it's not RAW, I like the idea of something more substantive to encourage the cooperation and collaboration that comes from a coordinated attack. The coolness of the RP by itself should be enough, but an extra hit die of damage might encourage players to be more involved when it's not their turn. We'll see how Mr Mercer plays it out. I may experiment at my table.

They would not use metaphor to call pets children in a world where actual children can be cursed into permanently becoming literal animals. Like, you can just have your kid polymorphed into a dog if you piss off the wrong Wizard. It wouldn’t be a common expression, because it has a literal version and people wouldn’t want to make the faux pas.

@@demonzabrak no it's not. If anything, knowing every single intricacy of language through socioeconomic classes is meta gaming. Uncommon sayings are still sayings, regardless. There are sects of isolated people in DND that don't know about magic, so it would stand to reason that literary devices would change throughout various groups of people. Plus, if what you said is to be followed then no one in any campaign should ever use metaphors or non literal sayings, because damn near anything is possible. At least that's my line of thinking as another DM.

I mean, I get the gist, you disagree with my fundamental premise, and that’s actually fine, but I’m still right. Metagaming is just using player knowledge to inform character decisions, while playing a game. A player heard someone say children, and immediately assumed it was a certain way, based on real life expectations and experience. The character doesn’t have your life’s experiences and expectations built into it. They, the character, would have had a different gut reaction than the player. Therefore, it IS metagaming. The actual mechanical rules also have no direct statement that magic is rare or exists in pockets. The mechanical rules say that about 1 in 20 people can’t cast magic, and everyone else can at least learn one type of cantrip. 3d6 generates a number 10 or higher 62.5% of the time. Odds of having 0 of 3 magic stats that are over 10 is 0.375^3, and that’s about 5.2%. It’s actually less reasonable to assume a setting has areas without magic than it is to assume it has magic everywhere, without additional setting details related to a particular campaign. Please note: unlike most people, I am not bothered by metagaming by default. Some types are less desirable than others, but the metagaming feature “player buy in” is objectively good. You don’t NEED to spend a long RP session justifying a new character jointing the group when your old one died and the body was lost. You can just meta that. Saves time, particularly in high death campaigns. You can make pop culture references, and laugh at things that sound a little to much like a euphemism for something “naughty.” You can metagame. It’s actually okay. You just need to talk about which types are allowed at your table, and what expectations you should bring. The only rule that actually matters is “this is a game, the point is to have fun.” It’s rule -1, before rule 0, which is “DM gets to say what the rules are.” Metagaming is not a problem. Metagaming is an essential tool for playing the game. Some people don’t really understand it, and assume it’s bad. It isn’t. Sometimes, the actions players take to avoid metagaming in a good way are clear examples of metagaming in a bad way, and a bunch of rookie players take this group and their style as gospel, and they’re honestly not very good from a gameplay perspective. Mostly fantastic Role Players, pretty solid world building, but not spectacular. An example is the famous door bit from season 1, where they tried a bunch of things one time and escalated the shenanigans. That’s bad metagaming. “I failed this roll so I can’t try again.” I was in the infantry. If you kick a door and it doesn’t open, the first second and third responses are not “try using a sword as a lever, climbing into a second story window, and jumping through the wall.” It’s kick the door three more times. Then it’s shoot the door until it looks fucked up enough to kick open. The In Character thing to try would have just been… trying a few more times. I don’t recall if Matt had lock picks break, but… that’s bad metagaming too. If he did a ruling that wouldn’t have happened for game drama purposes. You don’t need to inject drama into D&D, the dice will do it for you. You wanna hear some good metagaming that Matt could have done? “You try and force the door, but fail. It feels like you could get it if you tried a bit harder and were a little lucky. DC 19 to open the door like that.” That second half is metagaming, but it keeps the action moving forward. It informs the players of things the characters would have known, while also telling the players something the characters can’t know. Nuance.

I still think it's totally adorable and wholesome. It implies that she accepts and loves Laudna, the way she is. But also just very funny.

She doesn't notice any whispers because they blend in with all the other ones.

Half of the crew doesn’t seem bothered by them.

@@mikeandjenn2001 that's not how that happened (if you're talking about the Tomb), but Vex did fire explosive arrows near Scanlan (and Grog) that would have led to his death if Matt used the "meelee attacks lose 2 death saves" rule at the time

being the only notetaker in the campaign is so stressful and wonderful and it’s great. i was in a group with one player who often wasn’t there and they were the only other who took any notes. so there was just me as a tiny wizard who we said canonically filled his notebook with stuff so i had a reason when i had to flip through so many notes. i filled like four books. and now i’m dm, and i’m worried about them because none of them will take notes

@@castor2029 Been in the position once where I was the only note taker. I got so freaking excited when the DM dropped a clue and I tied it back to a person I had written in my notes. I got really excited while the rest was like: what the hell are you talking about? They couldn't even remember ever having met this person xD But when this happened, I decided to always make notes because 1) it's nice for the DM if someone keeps track and 2) it's awesome to be the one figuring stuff out.

@@castor2029 honestly, without you to rely on, they will soon realize how important notes are. Make it clear that notes are their responsibility. Let them screw up and don't help them with repeating everything. Just say "you've met them/been there before, look at your notes" instead of explaining. I'm sure they'll take the hint :) Most of us as players had to learn that the hard way.

Heck I named my bard in a campaign I’m in (which 3.5 bards are nigh on impossible to play properly without having to upgrade to a sublime chord) after Roy Orbison, except I spelled his last name in a way that worked better in a fantasy setting like Faerun 😂

@@jmc6326 As a matter of fact, I think I've changed my mind since posting this comment; I think Dorian is probably my favorite mode, but minor/aeolian is up there too. I haven't heard much in Lydian, and I think that mode shows a lot of promise. How bout you?

@@thomasevans4578 I like Dorian a lot, but it's probably third for me. Lydian is my absolute favorite. Idk if you like instrumental guitar music or not, but Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson all use it a lot. Joe Satriani's "Flying in a Blue Dream" is a great example. Phrygian Dominant is probably second. It gets used a bunch in certain genres of metal
