The Three Arrows: Fate of the Black Douglas (Scottish Folklore)

The Fate (or weird in scots) of the three arrows, is an old Scottish tale which revolves around Sir James Douglas. He was known to be one of the greatest knights in Scotland. This was not for his ability to command man, but for his mastery of fear as a tool of war and his personal ferocity in battle. There were very few English men that crossed swords with Douglas and lived to tell the tale. Many in Scotland knew him as Good Sir James as he had always championed Bruce’s claim for the throne. For years Douglas would hold the border between Scotland and England. On many occasions he would lead raiding parities south into Northumbria. The English of the border feared Sir Douglas so much, they thought of his as some form of demon. It was then he was given the moniker of the Black Douglas, since all the people of England knew that death followed wherever the Douglas went. One Night while the Black Douglas was stationed in Jedburgh, he met a strange old woman who engaged him in a quest of revenge.

One thing I love to reflect on is the fact we have never truly been conquered. The Romans, the Norse, and the English all tried to conquer but they best they could do was either build big walls to keep us out or sign treaties. Albeit those treaties ended up not being so good for the Scots.

I’m proud to say I’m a descendent of Sir James Douglas! We’ve got the family tree and ancestry paperwork to prove it. Even the 23 & Me results I did in high school for a family tree project shows my family is mostly from the area. My granddad along the Douglas line has an antique sample of the Tartan, not from that long ago but a bit later when most of the family was still in the area. I want to visit his ruined tower one day…

As a Drysdale, my roots trace back to the Douglas clan. Three Douglas brothers in the 1400s got into a territorial dispute with the Johnston clan and a number of Johnston's ended up dead. The King of Scotland at the time was friends with the Johnston clan, and sought to bring retribution to the Douglas Brothers. They fled and hid from the King. They settled near a small river called the dryfe River and changed their name to Drysdale. Today the Drysdale parish sits near Lockerbie Scotland and is a location of a memorial built for passengers that died from the Lockerbie bombing.

My direct ancestor Thomas Dickson fought alongside Sir James Douglas in the retaking of Castle Douglas in 1307. Unfortunately Thomas Dickson received a wound across his belly and was seen holding his belly to hold his guts in while fighting on with his sword with his other hand. He finally succumbed to his wounds that day Sunday 1307. He and his family were givin lands from Robert the Bruce for his loyalty and bravery in battle in perpetuity.

Thanks for your Video. I am of the line of the Black Douglas through my maternal Grandmother who was the Cousin of Lord Douglas, She married my Grandfather who was of the line of Gunn. My coat of arms that Sir James Father William hung over the gates of Berwick when he tried in vain to defend it against Edward the beast Longshanks Army. the over ran the town butchering everyone,, leaving their bodies where they fell for months as punishment. He also sent William Douglas to London to die in the Bloody tower. In Berwick he had a Bulls privates cut off and nailed onto the white area beneath the three stars on the Douglas Sheild over the city gates. An insult neither forgiven nor forgotten by my family.

I'm just a whisper past the ten minute mark. I'm hoping the Douglas planted on of the old ladies arrows into each of the killing strikes on the three English leaders. I don't recall the woman saying she wanted the arrows to be the cause of death? Didn't she simply say she wanted to return the arrows to the English the same way they came to her? Back to the tale. Love the Holy Grail footage!

I love hearing about brave men like Douglass! I love hearing about anyone who would stand up to the English. I can't help but think, though, that the old woman was inspired by one of the war goddesses. Her appearance, her commission, and the coincidence of the English coming to fight the Douglass just afterwards sounds like one of the war goddesses' machinations.
