A man goes on the trail of the Black Douglas, inspired by the Netflix movie Outlaw King. He visits the real sites depicted in the film then tells the story of Douglas's liberation of Berwick
I’m a descendent of the Black Douglas, I’ve got the family tree and the 23&Me test to prove it, my granddad was a huge history buff and had a piece of antique tartan, not quite that old haha, but it matches up. My last name is Douglas. My family line pretty much stayed in Scotland for AGES, migrated south to Yorkshire and stayed there for AGES, and then came to Australia, someone in the family has a collection of copies of documents about it all… evidentially the hatred for the English and the church is still strong in the family line.
@@QUESTIONTHEWORLDVIEW Black Douglas Black Reserve 12 is what you're looking for ...a nice Highland single malt...though the Douglas was a Border Lord ... Cheers Laddie!
@@mightybaloo1880 bwhaha my youngest son would agree. The gift dies if they turn you into a monument he said. No bowing, just rising up for love & freedom for the People. It feels like the blood DNA soul, wha'er we know it by asks this. We are very happy through all tragedies & miracles in our family to be a wee bit of Douglass Clan.
History and people like Black Douglas are some reasons I am always in awe of Scotland and your great heros. I'm American, we have historical figures. But no1 so universally loved by the whole country as Scotland's heroes! Robert the Bruce, William Wallace and by all means most absolutely Black Douglas! It's a beautiful thing. I sincerely mean this. I have a history degree, that's not important, I only mention that because in all years of studying I can truly and safely say no other country but Scotland has such heroes, universally beloved by all Scots!
I love seeing this! James Douglas is my ancestor and even the name has past through my family as far as my grandfather. I would love to get the chance to visit the homeland and his resting spot.
How could you not respect a man of such ferocity and determination such as Douglas. I have Irish/Italian ancestry but just marvel at what this man and his brothers in arms were able to achieve. DOOOUUUGGGLLAAAAAASSSSS!!!!!
“James Douglas, the man known as Scotland's fiercest ever warrior” - Well, with the facial expressions that you have pulled, you rank alongside him as “Scotland's fiercest ever presenter”. Well done.
Awesome... As a small boy, I remember my Grandfather (William Douglas Sr.) telling me the story of the Douglas and the Bruce. And why the Bruce's heart was front and center on our family crest. When you entered the Church, with that key... your reverence and awe as you knelt at the tomb of James Douglas was extremely palpable. Who else was entombed at this location? The other walls and center seemed to be occupied. USA / Midwest here. Thank you for bringing the Douglas history to life with such emotion!!! ... Bruce Douglas
Thank you Mark Nicol for your contagious expression of the stories in these places. Our wee branch of Douglass lives in the United States. When I was a girl I made a necklace of our crest Heart and Stars to share with my brothers. I said, we have to remember where we came from, who we are, what we stand for - love & freedom for the People, hopefully with not so much bloody fighting. It feels like the blood DNA soul, wha'er we know it by asks this. We are very happy through all tragedies & miracles in our family to be a wee bit of Douglass Clan.
Thank you for an amazing walk through history about James the good/black douglas!!! Words can’t Describe the feeling that my ancestor was a great hero of Scotland!!! Very proud of my surname and family history!! Thank you!!
Outstanding! Mark,my favourite of your videos so far.The Black Douglas was my boyhood hero, and that he is now starting to get attention for his role his Scottish history alongside The Bruce and Wallace,is long over due.He totally deserves his own epic movie to bring him further into the public consciousness.Great job!
This is what RU-vid is all about hidden gems! If you can find your way through all the trash gems are there to be found and I found a gem tonight Mark Nicol and his videos thanks Mark keep up the great work
Great man! And a the corries song! Iust subscribe now. First video ive seen but thoust passion is great and strong. Good job. I'll be checking out more
Mark, my ancestor Thomas Dickson was with Sir James Douglas when they went to retake Douglas castle in 1307...Thomas was slashed across his belly and was said to be seen holding his belly to hold his guts in while he fought on until he succumbed. His family were ceded lands south of Douglas castle by Robert the Bruce for Thomas Dickson faithful service and bravery in battle ..I am coming to Scotland this year in June and will be visiting all the areas of my forefathers ..Thanks for the great content. My name is Reese Thomas Dickson.
Wow. Brother in arms. James is my 24th Great GrandUncle, we descended from Archibald, his brother. I just watched The Outlaw King for the first time today and I cried when James’s character came on.
@@stella8726 We are actually related.. Thomas's mother was a Douglas and his father was Richard of clan Keith, before they had last names. Thomas and James were cousins and James came to Thomas's nearby farm to recruit men to retake Castle Douglas as you seen in the film..If you watch the credits closely you will also see credits of "Thomas Dickson" played by..... So yes, we are related in blood and brothers in arms, absolutely...It was so chilling to be on the spot of the battle and where Sir James is buried in that little church nearby of St Brides...What heros they all were..
@@imyourhuckleberry357 Cousins? I never knew that. Thanks to you for that information. Many of the nobles were related, I have the Stewart’s too. Where do you bide?
Well done, its great that your so passionate about. Hes a very interesting character, Douglas. Ive heard of him before but not that much, thank you for sharing your well made video. Im from Ireland but I find Scottish history interesting also. God Bless.
James Douglas is my family. I have looked into my families history and found out that I'm blood kin to James Douglas, I would love to visit that place and learn more about my family history.
Hi loved your video just watched the OUTLAW KING and am fascinated by SCOTLANDS HISTORY always have been. Can't help but feel YOUR PRIDE coming thru the video hitting me in the face. LOVE IT. AWESOME. 👍👍👍👍
I came on here looking for information because my Grandmother has just told me today that we are part of the douglas clan. I am wow at all of this. i didnt know anything until she said it to me. makes sense now on my personal actions in life lol
Great video presentation, and I enjoyed your previous presentation on the subject. I remember reading, "If the Douglases had not existed, Sir Walter Scott would have had to invent them." So true. The exploits of the Douglases certainly do read like fiction. From the interweaving into the Royal family, the treachery between "The Red Douglases" and "The Black", the actions of these warlords, good and bad, are the story of Scotland. Proud to be direct descendant of Sir James and both houses. Please dig for more stories to do about the Douglases! There are many, and you would do these stories justice with your video presentations! Keep up the great work!
Just what I expected Mark. Fantastic as usual and a great insight to someone we glossed over in Galashiels Academy !!!!!! Bet you were over the moon getting the key to your hero's tomb
One of only a handful of heroes including wallace to NEVER swear fealty to Edward. This documentary doesn't even touch the sides, this man was a fucking fearless animal.
A friend of mine linked this too me, the production values are top notch and I enjoyed this as much as anything I see on mainstream tv!! Funny, I always want the “rebels” to win in films/historical events like this and I’m English.
This makes me proud to see considering I'm related to James the black Douglas. I've always made sure to follow my dna since I was a young boy. Ancestry DNA helped me pint point exactly where my blood and name comes from. I'm proud to be a Douglas.
Thanks for the video! Black Douglas is my ancestor and I didn’t know anything about him before this video. I need to have a watch of Outlaw King now haha
Great video!!! I wish I could of course with your permission upload it to my channel. Just would make it easier for me to share to other social spots.. I would put a link to your channel of course..let me know.. Again well done on the video
Stories handed down to me from my great-grandfather, has my family poised as the descendants Sir James himself. I grew up hearing these "fables". Long live Scotland and Freedom for all. Love and Respect to all Douglas Clan in Canada, America and back home in Scotland.
Hey mark did you ever hear of a legend where in the mid 1400s before most of the black Douglass family was wiped out at the battle of at Arkinholm that there was a baby the Douglas family left on the front steps of St Thomas church in Falkland palace so that he wouldn’t be killed. I live in America but have heard about it and was curious if it was a legend over there?
I am also a descendant of James Douglas. Have the pin at home. I am discovering more and more about him and i couldn't be any more prouder. Its incredible to discover family on this page as well.. if you all would like to connect and figure out some sort of family tree that would be amazing!!
great video! but there are many people who think they are related to the Douglas family, just because they have that surname. That's not how clans work!
Great story telling and Gimbleing with the Drone. My Grandma Olive Austin who's mom was a Douglas said they cut the Kings head off and brought it back to Scotland. I wonder if you can verify that tale? Maybe they'll finish the story of Good James and the Tragedy in Spain. When you tell it can you play "Nights in White Satin" Moody Blues. Thanks Bob
I am a Douglas also in america my grandfather was from ayrshire Scotland was told we are descendants as well. We are a military family I've been to war but Sir James was in 72 battles I believe hand to hand could you freaking imagine 72 battles all hand to hand combat dude was a beast.
That's kl as fuck man 👌 Need to go now, Rosslyn Chapel aswell. The Black Douglas always intrigued after reading Outlaw King. Boy seemed like a handful 😁🏴
Marc, It´s Marco from Mexico. Is this a public place? People can just go and ask for the key to walk in? Love your videos, sometimes it´s kind of hard for me to follow your accent but it´s always interesting. Keep on the good work and thank you for allowing us people from far off places to get to know such interesting places.
Marco Antonio Moreno thank you!! Yes it’s public. A lady who lives across the road has the key in her house and hands it out to visitors. Her address is on the church fence.
