You mentioned the straight out weakness with the cow hitch, does the timber have a similar directional shortcoming?

I've never seen it with the round turn before the dogs. It should be more secure that way though.

Yes. If it is a crucial rigging move I would choose a bowline on a bight though(or daisy chain hitch as Patrick uses)
