The Tom & Jerry - the most cozy, fluffy holiday drink ever!

Today’s drink is a cozy one - the Tom & Jerry! This is a holiday favorite that's been around for 200 years. What makes it so memorable is the texture - something created by using a batter. The batter should be enjoyed fresh, and most recipes require a large group to consume it all - so it really is perfect for a holiday party. This is a smaller recipe that's perfect for 2-3 people, but it's easily scaleable to serve the masses - if that's your goal. Liberties can, and should be taken. It's common to replace the hot water with hot milk, essentially creating hot eggnog. Or, if you want it richer, you could add softened butter to the batter and steer this drink closer to a hot buttered rum. Whatever approach you choose, may this fluffy, comforting drink warm your bones. Cheers!

From the cake angle. Eggs at room temperature. Whisk the egg whites first, transfer to another bowl. The reason is that the yolks contain fat, and fat is bad when whisking egg whites. You need a very clean bowl for the whipping. Then add the egg yokes and other incredients and beat using the mixer. You can get specialist paddles that scrape and beat. You want the mixture to go pale, and you want all the sugar to disolve. Hence the caster sugar bit. 10-15 minutes. Surprising long. Next to combine. Use a spatula. Fold in half, just half, of the egg whites. This lossens the mix. Then fold in the rest. That approach keeps the most air in the mixture.

Tip for when you don’t have caster sugar - just put your sugar in to a food processor for like 15-20 seconds and it will be caster sugar, you can also use a coffee grinder for this. Great video anders, making this week, can’t believe I’ve never heard of this one? Cheers! As a baker I would also make the adjustment to hand fold the egg yolk mixture as the paddle attachment might take more of the air out of the whipped egg whites.

Just want to say thanks for this video. My mother, aunts and grandmother used to make this drink frequently (along with hot buttered rums and hot toddies) for the adults in our family in the 70s and 80s here in California when I was little. Fond memories! Really appreciate you showing us how to reproduce it! I remember they made it from scratch sometimes (without the bitters), but they also cheated sometimes and bought a ready-made version of the batter in a tub that used to be found in local liquor stores along with other similar batters. You'd scoop them out by the tablespoon and add the booze and water/milk. This is the elevated version!

Perfect timing as always Anders! I've been working on 25 days of Rum drinks for Christmas so this one fits the mold! Definitely going to give this one a try! Happy Holidays and Cheers!

@Anders Erickson my original thought was just any rum drink but I've been finding some with festive names so trying to get as many as I can. LOL! So far I've had; Winter Daiquiri, Winter Rum Sour, Downhill Racer, Christmas Rum Cocktail, Holiday Mai Tai, Merry Rumhattan, Hot Buttered Rum Cranberry Daiquiri, the Brass Rail and a Planters Punch. Tonight's will be a Spiced Cider Highball. My favorite so far is the Merry Rumhattan. 2oz of Aged Rum (Appleton 12yr), 1oz Sweet Vermouth, 1/4oz Cranberry syrup, 1/4oz cinnamon syrup and 1 dash of Orange bitters.

That looks so good, I'll have to try and make that this winter! Funny story: I saw your video about the division bell, and I recently made a cocktail that was evidently a riff on a drink I didn't know existed lol. Without knowing the grandfather even was a thing I made up this drink working back and forth with a bartender. 1oz amereto 1.5 scotch .75 lemon 3 dashes bitters Top with soda I was going for sweet, smokey and citrusy. It took like 5 attempts to get the ratios right but he only charged me for the one that worked lol. I soon ordered it at another bar and she was like "oh, you made a riff on the grandfather" and I was like "wait, what?"

I never heard of that drink until I had one in Minnesota years ago. Made by the great aunt of the family.I thought she was going to make a lemon meringue pie.

I remember tom and jerry batter that came in a waxed cardboard tub. Didn't last very long, as we kids would casually sneak into it . I remember one time we drained the bucket in a matter of hours. All hell broke loose that evening when it was discovered what we had done.

I live in the Great White North and starting after Thanksgiving, pre-made batter is available in the grocery stores and many liquor stores! I'll have to try my hand at homemade, though. Thanks, Anders!

Had one years ago at Miller’s Pub on Wabash when I worked across the street from it. Great on a cold winter night, helped make the walk to the train much better. Great job on this!

I just made this last weekend. Never heard of it before but it came up on the Difford's cocktail-of-the-day calendar so I gave it a shot. I so wish I'd looked up your video beforehand, my preparation did not turn out so great from just reading the recipe. Still very warm and cozy drink though ;-)

My parents used to make Tom & Jerrys when I was a kid, but I never tried them. They'd buy batter from the grocery store, and I can't find any out here, so I tried this recipe. And can I just say? This is 1000% better than eggnog. Hands-down best holiday cocktail. I'm going to make these every year. Thank you for the amazing recipe!

Very similar to the eggnogg I made last week, no hot water. Folded in whipped heavy cream and thinned it out with whole milk.

I live in Ohio. My wife's grandparents used to own a very old bar and grill. This was a Christmas special drink that was popular. Another local place has them for a limited time during the holidays. Not bad, but not the same... yum.
