My dad showed me the value of carrying basic tools in your pocket. I suspect I've seen him grab and use his pliers literally 10,000 times! We'll show his tools, and some improvements I've added.

My edc is a pocket knife and a flashlight. This brought back a lot of memories about my dad. He always had an Old Timer knife and usually had a pair of diamond pliers. He was a rice farmer so we always had a shovel and a 22 rifle in the truck.

Thank you for resurrecting my memories of the tools my father and grandfathers carried (pliers and a pocket knife were common). For me I moved from Craftsman pliers and two stubby screwdrivers to now the Knipex XS Cobra pliers and Klein 8-1 stubby (extendable) screwdriver, always handy from the field on into the kitchen. A pocket knife is also always with me from workbench, to church pew. One method of carry I learned from my grandfather was to make a leather pocket liner from a worn glove by cutting off the fingers and thumb just past the top knuckles (either used in the back or front depending on the activity).

Tim....... Take the pair of pants that you REALLY like to a seemstress & have him/her sew in a strap or a flap that snaps closed, that will keep your tools in your pocket yet still at hands reach when you need them. What I did, I went to a guy here locally who worked with leather. I brought in the tools I like to carry. He figured out a good design & custom made me a belt carry pouch that's perfectly laid out for what I carry. It works awesome!!!

Tim - I still have a set of those Diamond pliers! However; I could have never survived farming without a mini set of vice grips in my pocket. Those small vice grips were a life saver so many times in the field. They held a shield in place, pinched off a hydraulic hose, bit into a warn or stripped bolt head......so many times those things saved my tail. Great video as always and thanks for sharing. God Bless you all in the New Year my friend. I bet your Dad is carrying a set of gold diamond pliers these days helping God get his work accomplished in Heaven. 👍

Omg! You just brought back some great memories of my Grandpa! He always had a pair of those diamond pliers as well. He carried them in the middle pocket of his overall bibs. I don’t know how many times me or my Uncle asked him if he has his pliers... he always did. Used them many times. Thanks for triggering that memory of my Grandpa.

I didn't realize how useful a pocket knife would be until I started carrying one... Then I didn't realize how often ambient lighting was insufficient until I started carrying a small flashlight... I keep adding tools and finding good ways to carry them. Soon, I may not need a toolbox.

Tim, once your absolutely certain which tools you want to carry and that they can be replaced if broken, go to a leather shop and have them fashion you a pouch custom fit and made to your desire. They will have the ability to choose a leather that is as thick and durable, that will last for 10 to 15 years or a thinner more flexible leather that will only last maybe 7 to 10 years, as you would like. This will allow you to choose any jeans you would like as long as you have a strong sturdy belt to carry the weight of the tools and pouch. I know some carpenters who spend a lot of money on custom fit construction belts as builders because they don't like the way the store brand belts fit and work for them. Keep in mind, it won't be cheap but will always be exactly what you need, which is worth something in itself! By the way, I have been watching your "RU-vid" channel for a couple of years now and don't think I've ever commented. I went back to the beginning and watched almost every video you guys have produced. I am considering purchasing a tractor, not sure what size yet, to work the land if I decide to purchase some land and build on it. I'm considering building a "Timber Frame or Post and Beam" home. So, I will need to buy a saw mill and tractor to mill the post and the beams. Good to finally reach out to you, I enjoy your family approach to how you handle the channel. God bless you and your family!

Great video Tim, growing up I remember my grandfather always carrying the diamond pliers, I still have one of his sets of pliers. My everyday carry is the Knipex Cobra 87 01 180 and the knipex pliers wrench 86 03 180, the pliers wrench do a great job with square or hex heads, I also carry a Milwaukee knife that takes a drywall blade and has flip out screwdriver.

Carhart carpenters pants are build like the Lee's with a overlap on the side pocket. I wear them at work and home every day. Knnipex plyers are the best in my opinion. As an electrican, i can carry 3 screwdrivers in the right leg pocket and plyers and 6" crescent wrench in the left. Covers most things. 40# tool bag stays on the truck, but ther if i need it. At home, every tractor has a 6 in 1 screwdriverr and crescent wrench in the tool box, and i have a small pouch that holds a few combination wrenches, hammer, small socket set, and channel locks that travels with me from tractor to tractor when i got out to do whatever task is at hand. This works for me, hope it helps others. Keep selling tractors

I feel your pain my friend. I farmed in my younger years in southern Iowa in the 70s and 80s. I struggled for years tofind a system for tools that I could carry on my person. My family I farmed with did not possess a superpower for keeping track of tools and alot of the time the monkey wrenching details fell to me. I know alot of folks around town got a big kick out of seeing what kind of gear I would have strapped to myself at any given time. This were pre leatherman days. If I had had the multitools then I have now I would have had it made. Mostly I finally settled on a pair of 3 position water pump type pliers and a 4 inch diamond crescent wrench in my pocket which i still have believe it or not. Anything else required a trip to the toolbox. Never really did get there as to the kind lf system I wanted.

I always appreciate the info in your videos. It’s funny how the “little” things in life make a big difference in day to day activities. I always carry a Leatherman “Micra” tool or Gerber “Squirt” in my pants pocket along with a 6 ft. Zippo tape measure. Handy for all occasions. Also carry the Gerber blunt nose multi tool when working on the farm. As has been said, it does many things moderately well. The pants issue seems to be a never ending saga. Thanks for the info, and blessings!

My EDC are Columbia Breha 2 shorts,(K-nipex)6 in plierwrench, Wiha tradesman screwdriver. I live in SE Ga,and have been wearing the Columbia for 10 yrs (10 months per yr,)installing fence and cabinets . The plierwrench have a mechanical advantage of about 6-1 for squeezing ,and can turn a round pipe. Wiha tradesman have 13 double ended bits inside the handle, and a lock to hold the bit at the tip. I've tried many brands of pants, pliers, and screwdrivers over my 44 yrs. These, underwear, socks, and shoes, make a huge difference in your day to day comfort.

Tim - 2 things - gotta have the pocketknife! You may carry one and not think of it as a tool? 2nd - try Roundhouse Jeans (round-house.com). They have the catch at the top, like your Lee’s but are made in the USA. They are a little more expensive, but they sell seconds for less than the Lee’s and you are supporting American workers. Thanks for all your great info!

I might have a few viable options for you. Duluth Trading Company makes some pants called Firehose Cargo pants. Their cargo pockets are actually three separate pockets and my Cobra 180 fits perfectly in one of them and my Klein 11 in 1 fit in there too. You could seriously carry enough tools to fix about anything in these pants. They are as rugged as my Carhartt duck pants but fit a lot better and are easier to move in as they have a gusset in the crouch area especially for people who actually do physical work. They are kinda warm like the Carhartt in the summer time though. That's when I switch over to my 511 and Blackhawk cargo pants. They have places to put your magazines in some and some just have multiple pockets within the cargo pockets. You might also like the Klein 5 in 1 or 11 in 1 screwdrivers better than the one your currently using. They'll not lose their bits and shafts like a lot of screwdrivers and their bits are high quality and won't wallow out screws or round the bits off like some do. They come with a clear silicone type cap which is good to keep and use as it keeps the screwdriver from wearing holes in your pants. It's kinda strange that so few people carry any tools anymore. I grew up in the country doing farm work and then got into the construction trades. So I don't feel completely dressed without at least a couple of tools and a good knife in my pocket. I find it funny that so many people frown on carrying a knife now days. When I went to school we carried belt knives if we wanted and rifles in our vehicles. Now in the same school the kids have to go through metal detectors and they have school cops. It's depressing how everything has changed and it gets worse with every passing day. I don't care what anyone thinks about my knife and tool carrying. They are always glad to see people like us when they are broke down with their hoods up though, go figure. LOL

I only think about this as a first responder, but was always advised not to carry screwdrivers in lower pants pockets. It places the tip right near your femoral artery, which isn't a problem when you're digging a hole, but is if you slip & fall or forget to take them out when you get into your car. Just something that crosses my mind every time I go through exactly these same thought processes. Deluth Pants are the best line I've ever worn. Those Wrangler Rigg's the he mentions are #2.

If you want to talk about diesel perfume, I was a submarine sailor on a WWII Diesel Submarine with 4 Fairbanks Morrison Diesel engines. Only shower on board was used for food storage. So when we went ashore we all smelled like diesel fuel. I was later transferred to a nuclear submarine which didn't have that issue, it did have a diesel engine that served as backup but the boat was so much larger and the engine was only started rarely to test it, the exposure to diesel smell was not a problem. In the Navy I carried a huge folding Case knife in a holster to cutting through mooring lines if your feet ever got tangled in them. These days I carry a Leatherman like many others.

Here's my vote... A Leatherman Wave in a tool belt sheath and the 7-1/4" (or 10"?) Knipex pliers in the Carhartt belt holster. The 6-in-1 screwdriver is a better screwdriver than the Leatherman, but the Leatherman's screw drivers work in a pinch and the Leatherman also gets you its needle nose pliers, two knife blades, a file and hacksaw, a wood saw, and scissors. The Knipex pliers are much more useful for nuts and bolts and grabbing bigger things than the Leatherman's pliers.

I carry a pair of knipex cobras at work, had the same pair for 16 years. We always would carry, what we call the "big three" channel locks, 6 in one screwdriver, and adjustable wrench. I also carry a leatherman. And I wear carpenter pants and use the side pocket to carry tools like you showed. Best way I have came up with, but you end of with holes on the side pocket eventually, and fhe hole will get big enough your tools will start falling through. Then its time for a new pair of pants.

I grew up wearing a Cee Tee pliers on my waist and always had a pocket knife in my pocket. Somewhere on the tractor or implement we always had a loop or two of bailing wire. Now, my tools often vary with the attachment I have hooked up. For the tiller, it's the socket and combination wrench for adjusting the height. If I'm using the HH tooth bar, I make sure I have the allen head socket and wrench should I need to tighten those, etc. It helps that I rarely use my tractor off of our 2 acre property so more tools are always near by. I can't believe you tricked me into watching a video about jeans. I'm going to have to go use some power tools or something now.... I think I have the same Lee jeans, but they haven't trickled down to 'outside work' status yet. Recently, my wife's left-over Khol's cash has been getting turned into those jeans. If you were shopping in Winona, it was Fleet Farm. There's a good bit of humor built around Fleet Farm vs Farm & Fleet: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n1EzBcRQiQ4.html

Yeah, I've carried a pocket knife since I was a teenager, so close to 50 years. I always have it with me. If I need any other tool, my truck is always nearby. Just about any common handbook and some power tools are in the truck. Besides that, I have multiple copies of all my hand tools, so tools in my office drawer, tools scattered around each recent project in the house, tools in the woodshop, tools on the tractor, more tools in the tool chests in the garage, etc. I would find a plier/screwdriver/wrench banging around on my leg annoying. I'm glad you found your solution.

I love the Duluth Firehose Flex cargo pants. Only buy them on sale but work great. Because of you I carry pliers all the time. I use Irwin's version of the Knipex pliers. Alot cheaper and had great reviews. The pants come in three different fits. I where mine low so the standard fit works perfect. I've tried the other two fits but they are definitely not for me.

I also carry a pair of pliers. I lost the pair that I really liked when i was at a softball game for my daughter. I don't remember the brand but I miss them. I currently carry a pair of Stanley slip joints. I also carry a straight blade screwdriver (the most abused tool ever), a sharpie and a putty knife. The putty knife is a 1.25" Hyde Tools. The handle is thin so it carries easily. I used to carry in the side pocket of my pants like you suggest. I quit doing it because it would wear a hole in the bottom of the pocket eventually so the screwdriver and the sharpie would fall through. I currently use a Masterforce 5 pocket Utility Knife Tool belt pouch from Menards. Nice and small but carries everything nicely. It has a metal belt clip so it can be removed easily if needed.

Swiss army knife, two blades, screwdriver, and a pair of pliers. Been carrying one for 45 years. Lost a few over the years but easy to carry in pants pocket. Use it every day. O, fyi I am in the process of buying 2 Ventrac mowers for the golf course I work at, great videos, keep it up

I like Duluth Trading Duluthflex carpenter pants. Cool enough for summer & I switch to the fleece lined ones for winter. I do not carry a screwdriver, too hard on pockets. I have a Leatherman Supertool 300 in a belt holster & Maglite AAA led flashlite in my right side pocket. Too many dark areas to work in & this lite is easy on batteries & as brite as much bigger units. You are correct on Knipex pronounciation. I have several in my toolbox & used to carry one when I worked at the mill. The Leatherman gets me out of most tight spots now. People like to poke at me a little also because I always have a tool & a lite but they dont mind borrowing them.

I carry a Leatherman Surge multi tool and Kershaw Leek pocket knife. I’m a fan of Carhartt carpenter jeans. Nice and lightweight with good pockets.

I have one of those cheap 6 in 1 screwdrivers in every vehicle and every work space! The 5/16" hex is perfect for hose clamps. I EDC a Leatherman wave, kershaw clip pocket knife, and streamlight clip flashlight. I highly recommend Duluth Trading DuluthFlex Fire Hose Relaxed Fit Carpenter Pants. The most comfortable I've ever owned and they wear awesome. I've had one pair over 4 years worked hard and looks new. Pricy but I wait and get them on sale

I carry a pocket knife and Knipex cutters. In cleaning the farm we have come across a lot of old fence line/wire and they get used a lot. I use a simple leather pouch to carry them in. In the tractor cab, I have two spud wrenches, screwdriver, and a Channellock tongue and groove pliers. Like yourself, I tried to find away to carry more tools on me that wasn't burdensome, but so far haven't been successful. There are times I will switch out my cutters for pliers depending on what I think I might be getting into, but most of the time, it is the cutters.

Look into the Klein 11-in-1 screw driver. As a maintenance tech I'm never without one. They're more expensive but I've never had one wear out and get sloppy, and they tend to last at least a year or more of daily use. Also LA Police Gear's web site had a great selection of tactical cargo pants with magazine/knife pockets of varying styles that are GREAT for EDC tools.

Tim, Men's DuluthFlex Fire Hose Relaxed Fit Carpenter Pants are my favorite pants. They have the same crook as your pants. They are very tough, and have lasted much longer than jeans in my experience. However they are expensive $69.50, currently they are 25% off. I believe that ends 1/11/21 at midnight.

For over 30 years I carried a pouch that had snips & knife slots. I worked outside for Southwestern Bell and they were part of the job. Now I just carry my pocket knife, just need to remember to take it out when you go to certain places!

I carry 8” pin wrench, channel locks, a flat screw driver, and I knife. I work in a large industrial facility. It is amazing what you can fix with 4 tools when you are 100-150 flights of stair away from your tool box. For a long time I wore Duluth trading firehouse pants, but like you, ever time I sat down my tools fell out. Recently I am trying the TSC house brand pants (only $10) and they are very comfortable and the pocket seems to hold pretty well but not like Those Lee pants. They look great, I will be ordering a pair to try.

I carry a pair of pliers, a Milwaukee Fastback utility knife, and some type of mini flashlight (none of them last very long for me) as my EDC. I started keeping my pliers in a pouch 5 years ago after getting frustrated with them constantly falling out of the side pocket of my Carhartt 5 pocket carpenter jeans.

Hi Tim & Christie (Christy?), I have a variety of carpenter & cargo pants, none are perfect but the Riggs are high on the list and a pair of Cabela's carpenter pants are firmly planted at the bottom! Typically my phone goes in the right thigh pocket (being rt. handed) and the Cabela's have a hammer loop and no rt. hand pocket so my phone ends up on the ground and thee front pocket lining is just a bit thicker than tissue paper... both blew out within a month just carrying keys, very small pocket knife and wallet. My "home EDC", Buck 1.5" lock blade folding knife, Streamlight rechargeable pen light, original Leatherman. Occasionally, depending on the days chores, I'll swap the small Buck for a Buck 110. Last but not least, Springfield XDM45 in a IWB holster. My "work EDC", same as above plus a Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger for laptop, small tool kit (with small Knipex, 4" & 6" adjustable wrench, Klein 11-n-1, Klein 4-n-1(0 & 00 Philips and 2 small straight blade tips), Klein electrical tester, & 12' tape measure), and an assortment of task specific meters for the day. My dad always wore bibs and I've been considering trying out a pair myself but you make a good point about them being hot. Also been looking at the Duluth Trading brand of fireflex/firehose I don't recall now what they're made of but those are definitely an investment, I think they are in the $70 range. I noticed one of your viewers said they are having a 25% off sale so now might be the time to buy! I love your videos, please keep them coming... always look forward to the scripture! Dom
