Years ago most of these neighborhoods were very affordable. Big money came in and refurbished everything and the prices skyrocketed and the people who grew up here can't even afford to live here anymore! There is no real middle class in Portland anymore in my opinion. The homes on munjoy Hill are exorbitantly high. A two-bedroom condo on the hill is about $750,000 and how is that affordable? Portland has turned into a city I don't even know anymore and I grew up in South Portland! South Portland is outrageously priced also and property taxes are getting ridiculous in both Portland and South Portland. These videos are made for the rich and only the rich!!!

@@3verdades832 There is something very wrong with unchecked capitalism that punishes the poor and middle classes for no reason other than they are easy prey for millionaires and billionaires -- who by the way participate in a socialistic economy for themselves. Destroying life for the masses so that the privileged few can turn the world into their playground is beyond disgusting.

The real Portland died 15-20 years ago. It is completely unaffordable in all neighborhoods. I grew up there and lived in the parkside neighborhood for 20 years until the prices of everything skyrocketed and my family had to move. Nothing about Portland is the same as it was back then.

I've lived in Portland for 34 years, love it..., and lived on Munjoy Hill for 13 years..., in a house with a ghost. To the gentlemen that posted this video I can tell you where you were, you were at Sumner Park, I used to take my backpack chair there and watch the sunset. So..., is everybody ready to get freaked out?..., this is going to be interesting. Start at 4:25, the guy on the left said he'd looked at a remodeled house that had been turned into 500 Sq. feet condos, and the price was a quarter million each..., and he pointed off to his right and said it was just down the street..., that was Quebec st, and that was MY house. LoL My partner and I sold the building 4 years ago and bought a house here in Westbrook, no more tenants, yaaaay!, and the old place is definitely condos now, very pretty. Can somebody do me a favor and tell the gentleman that the house he was talking about used to be mine..., and that if he did go inside..., he just walked in to a haunted house. I sh-t you not. 😱😱😱

10 years ago I retired and moved to Portland because the rents were so much cheaper than Ma., and because I loved the area. Lived on Mellen St., Parkside. Left 5 yr.s later because the rent was going through the roof & the landlord did nothing to maintain the units for us (because he could charge even more for new tenants?). Moved down to Alfred, just west of Kennebunk. Quiet, safe, closer to beaches, and basic cost-of-living way more manageable. Only things missing are Deering Oaks Park and the Saturday farmer's market.

Best place is the islands. You take a twenty minute ferry ride. And your in the heart of down town Portland the largest city north of Boston. You can walk to any neighborhood bar/ restaurant. You are at the foot of the mountains of sugar loaf and Sunday river. Your an 5.5 hour drive from Quebec. Portland International Jet port gets you to Iceland and then Europe. You keep your car on the island until you really need it.

Nice video. Any recommendation for neighborhoods that is about half an hour to Portland that is in the 300k-ish maximum for a new build house? I work in Brunswick while renting an apartment in Augusta and planning to settle our family somewhere near portland. Good schools for young kids is also a consideration. thanks

Sorry to burst your bubble, but good luck finding anything at that price-point without a major catch. Wealthy City folk are moving up here in droves right now. Demand is much higher than supply... As a result, I'd say Lewiston/Auburn is the closest you will get to Portland for your Price Range and Housing Type, and the schools aren't amazing in either town. My parents commute to Portland from Auburn, and it's usually about a 40-minute ride each way. Hopefully you found this helpful!

Very interesting video, thank you. I would like to ask what is the best neighborhood to raise a family, not so far of downtown (not so close either), and maybe near a school ? ((where we can possibly use any french ?))

Hi Greg. Great questions, and there are couple of neighborhoods that come to mind, like Deering and North Deering. Matt is actually a French speaker, so I would suggest you definitely hop on a quick call with him. Our contact info is in the description, so feel free to DM or call anytime.

Sadly the average person can hardly afford to buy here now. Housing market pricing is exorbitant compared to the median incomes for the area

omg condos are only half a million that's so affordable. You only have to work for decades to afford a couple of bedrooms in a shared building

This is all basically BS. No mention of where you can live if you have a family. Too much mention of bars and restaurants. Portland is becoming a place where only the rich out of staters can afford a mere condo on the peninsula. Hey, remember that condos carry that extra monthly price for maintenance that will never decrease. As far as the islands go, there is nothing there for anyone and no reason to visit them. Most of them are part of the City of Portland. All the islands have very high taxes and few services from the City of Portland. One other thing... from December to April Portland is very cold, very snowy and very icy. And from April through June the weather basically sucks!
