A two-seat switch-wing (or VG, variable-geometry wing) aircraft, the Tornado has served in a range of roles, as fighter and ground-attack aircraft.Developed and then renewed in recent years by then-Prime Minister David Cameron, the jet was kept in its role bombing ISIS from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus for longer than originally planned.

Sad to see it phased out of RAF service next year but the Tornado is showing its age now, coming into service 1979/80, nearly 40 years ago! The Tornado has definitely proved it's self as a worthy aircraft for the UK, its allies and the RAF in particular.

How is it showing its age when even the Typhoon cannot (as yet) carry out the same role as Tornado GR4.
@davidhouseman4328

Mike William although the design is ageing it's the physical age of the airframes thats leading to there retirement.

David Houseman David. The primary reason Tornado is being retired by the RAF is Money and Manpower - the lack of both. The decision was taken by SDSR'S 2015 when it was decided that the RAF would operate 2 fast jet types - Typhoon and F35. Of course the aircraft are getting 'tired' there are plenty of spares as a result of the RTP PROGRAMME.

I must be getting old, tho it was the end of service for the Vulcan, 50sqd was my first operational Vulcan squadron and I remember tornado coming into service, it was brash, modern and loaded with technology, I couldn't wait for my posting onto Tornado, or as I though it would be, My next squadron turned out to be on harrier, then canberra and then tornado, 17f at RAF Bruggen in Germany, surprisingly I finished service life on Buccaneer and Hunters at Lossiemouth when Tornado took over once again, now they are bowing out, it's difficult to believe, I am simply GETTING OLDER...... 😒 Wonderful jet, it did a great job, along with the other great jets I looked after, Vulcan, Harrier, Canberra, Tornado, Buccaneer and the legendary Hunter. All the best British jets (Including tornado, being part of Panavia) its so strange to see even GR4's in museums, it is these moments when I see my jets in museums, I know age is creeping up on me... 😒 So long Tornado, job well done....!!!

Andrew Ward thank you for your service sir. One of the unsung hero's who in my eyes are as important as the chaps that fly them and the aircraft themselves. I live not 10 mins from what used to be RAF St Athan in South Wales (now disbanded and sold off to civilian contractors)... fond memories of Harrier, tornado, vulcun and many other types coming in for servicing not to mention the annual airshows. The tornado was the one I wanted to fly as a boy, unfortunately though I broke both of my arms in the last year of high school and missed out on all my exams. Dream over 😕. I ended up boots on the ground in the army instead for my sins lol. Thanks again Andrew 👍😎

Clayp.E30 _V8 pleasure was mine, if I could wind the clock back? I would do it ALL again... I know St Athan well, I have spent recent time there in it's civilian guise, been thinking about restoring a Hawker Hunter there, time will tell if I'm successful.....

Andrew Ward yes. I used to live in one of the old RAF houses on the eglwys brewis estate (they sold a lot of them off when they disbanded the camp) and saw hawker hunters flying regular. It's great to see them still going 😎

@@robertmackinnon4414 Thank you and Andrew the OP for both of your Service. Always found it strange and a little disturbing how Britain always keeps it's vets / servicemen very under wraps , but I think the country should be incredibly proud of themselves and a huge part of that are the forces. Our children and grand children wouldn't live such privileged lives if our nation hadn't given us all such a boost. People say they don't fly the Union Flag because people will think they agree with the BNP. Thats sad. I fly mine because men and women ,including a friend of mine, died for Great Britain. And I for one am grateful every day for the country I live in and those who made/make it so great.

Tornado has been such an outstanding fast jet. Pretty much the very best ground attack and strike aircraft the world has seen let alone the RAF. It was designed to take on the might of the Soviet Union and it's Warsaw Pact allies and be the first NATO strike aircraft into battle. As testiment to what the aircrew though of it just listen to the passion in John Nicholl voice. Very rare that you will hear such fulsome praise. To quote a pilot who I was lucky enough to speak to - every time I walk up to it Tornado gives me such a fantastic feeling. An awesome piece of kit. Well done Tornado. Retired far too soon and for the wrong reasons.

The Tonka entered service with TTTE in 1981, and operationally with IX (B) Sqn in 1982. ;-) The GR.1/4 has been a superb machine, shame about the F3, though it came good in the final five years! This jet has served us well though the Cold War, Op Granby 1991, Op Desert Fox 1998, Op Allied Force 1999, Op Telic 2003, Op Herrick 2009, Op Ellamy 2011 and Op Shader 2014. Sadly though as with all types, time has finally caught up with it and retirement looms, I just hope that it goes out with the fanfare it richly deserves.

I remember making models of the Panavia Tornado and the F-18 Hornet back in the mid 80's, when they were both still new enough that the model manufacturers only supplied the decals and colour schemes for very early versions. (I think that they were made by Hasegawa or Academy or Fujimi and were very detailed models for the time). It's amazing to think that they are now both considered to be quite old aircraft that will likely soon be consigned to history.

Never understood why UK always use twin-engine aircraft... it’s extremely costly to maintain and operate in comparison to single-engines. It would make sense for USAF who doesn’t exactly have budget problems. If you take a good look at UK’s budget and GDPs over the past 5 decades you will find a constant, a steady (with a few bumps) decline in defense spending, as % of the GDP, as % of the total budget, and for some periods even in real terms. All National Defence Reviews have been eminently budgetary papers detailing how the next round of cuts will be implemented.
@stephengilmore2741
@stephengilmore2741 5 лет назад
Both this and the Typhoon are pan-European projects, the decisions are not taken solely by the UK in any way. But yes, oddly enough single-engine fighters are usually statistically superior in most ways, even in terms of reliability. Perhaps that's why more modern fighters are being designed as single-engine. I doubt designers had the kind of data back in the 60s, 70s and even 80s that they have today.

@kevinwilliams4137
@kevinwilliams4137 5 лет назад
BS !!!! the f-15 strike eagle couldn't even find the targets at night during the gulf war. Even with the Lantirn system didn't find any scuds when given the grid patterns, highly over rated performance. Only success was when they bombed from medium altitude on other targets .Tornados' flew the most dangerous missions of the war taking out the airfields along with scud sites. Ids tornados are the most accurate bombing platform in Nato and can fly over 900 mph 65 feet off the deck in all weather day or night.
@dumdumbinks274
@dumdumbinks274 5 лет назад
The Tornado came before the F-15E though and was less expensive. @Kevin... You're exaggerating a lot. F-15Es didn't even drop that many guided munitions to begin with which is why they weren't that effective from higher altitudes... The F-111 dropped the vast majority of guided munitions in the conflict. Tornado losses were 6 in combat vs the 15E which only had 2 losses. More dangerous missions were abandoned because of those losses and most Tornado sorties were medium altitude. The Gr.4 upgrade was specifically to enhance the Tornado's effectiveness from medium and high altitudes because low-level flight is almost pointless now with all the advanced sensors and smart munitions available.

Hahaha 😂 Another uneducated comment, it was nothing to do about the aircraft that got the jet shot down, but it was a weapon, JP233, airfield denial, it had to be deployed in a high risk environment in a non tactical method, there's a long story behind the losses and Sir, you have NO IDEA....!
@KevTheImpaler
@KevTheImpaler 3 года назад
@@andrewward9601 The RAF believed in low level bombing to get under enemy radar. That airfield denial weapon was developed with low flying in mind. The Americans on the other hand did not believe in low flying because of their more recent experience in Vietnam.
