The Town 10th Anniversary Video Essay.
This video looks back at Actor/Director Ben Affleck's 2010 Boston crime drama "The Town". Based on the book "Prince of Thieves" by Chuck Hogan, Affleck crafts a heist film full of everything you would expect from the genre but also adds the same emotional punch that we found in his script for "Good Will Hunting". The set pieces are tense but the characters are as authentic as their Boston setting resulting in a powerful and ultimately memorable movie. Let me know what you think in the comments.

That was a brilliant video essay. A thorough examination of a lesser known movie gem with excellent parallels to Ben Affleck’s previous work highlighting the central themes of loyalty and longing for escape that run through his work.

Great video. Sorry it took so long to view it. Affleck IMO is close to being the next Clint Eastwood, on screen presence built around a persona, but a director that is seen as competent, but far more interesting and subtextual then he is given credit for. The Town is a film that I first saw on its release (mate of mine had a crush on Rebecca Hall, and he wanted to see it) And TBH it was a film that just passed by me, it really didn’t do much for me and it was just an entertaining Boston noir that cropped up in the late Noughties, early 10’s. It took me ten years to check this film out again and it is only now that I realise its a film about individuality and personal freedom. Despite his surroundings, Doug is very much the single everyman of the 21st Century, a man trying to gain freedom and not be defined by his peers, and Affleck portrays this part through vulnerability, regret and frustration. He is frightened, but he wants to exhilaration of leaving his old life behind and embrace his own choices. Claire is the catalyst, and Jem is the antagonist in this regard, but they too at the last moment do an abrupt face and their roles in a way reverse. The last thing that Jem says to Doug is “See you in Florida”, whilst Claire refuses to have initially any contact with Doug after his reveal. Whether this is bravado, or accepting fate, it is IMO a nice drawn out conclusion.

Thanks for the comment. I was a big fan on the book “Prince of Thieves” which the film is based on. The book is interesting as it’s a bit like Heat as the Jon Hamm character is also the main protagonist and focus more on the conflicts between similar men on different sides of the law and the love triangle also feeds into the dynamic more. Affleck took a great approach and saw the potential to make something more personal, focusing on the themes you discussed about the themes you mentioned. When I rewatched the film those themes resonated so much more and for all the action and suspense, the heart of the movie is very powerful and packs an emotion punch that stays with you. Despite not appealing to everyone, Affleck has proven himself to be a strong writer/director who seems to have a knack for choosing great stories that play to his strengths and sensibilities. BTW, a new video is coming this week!

@@graemewilson7975 The Town definitely takes a leaf out of Michael Mann’s book by putting the characters first and involving us in the stakes of the crimes elevating the action.

Excellent review of complex emotionally and physically movie. Affleck far better director than actor. They live by night although deeply flawed very enjoyable. The town is remarkable in its minutae of Boston life, with a brilliant cast playing every part superbly. And the late Pete postlewaite scene stealing with no noticeable effort. Brilliant review

To Live and Die in LA, the French Connection, Ronin, Terminator 2 and Bullitt all have great car chases. Also The Matrix Reloaded has a great car chase halfway through. Those are the ones that come to mind.

Lol, i think I cover enough of the story. I guess I focussed on Ben Affleck as he directed it and there seems to be a connection with the other work he has directed. I’ve got passion for all the filmmakers and actors featured in the movies I make videos on, otherwise what would be the point?
