Total Recall 30th Anniversary Video Essay
This video looks back at Paul Verhoeven’s mind bending science fiction classic “Total Recall” as it turns 30. Paired up with Action Icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, they created one of the greatest action films of all time, but beneath the surface of a secret agent movie on Mars, is an existential mystery as Arnie’s Douglas Quaid wrestles to find out the behind his identity as reality and fantasy collide. Please check out the video and let me know what you think in the comments.

Informative and entertaining. Lots to reflect on and in particular, the link between the film's slant toward ontological musings/questions (in and of reality), with that of (some) contemporary philosophers/thinkers propositioning that we (already) live in a simulation.

It’s a nicely layered, entertaining and ambiguous movie. So much so that even when I finished the video I think I missed many other clues and details that swing it either way. Glad you liked it.

Always learn something new from your videos that enhances my viewing of fave movies. And the editing is spot on with perfect split second (often comedic) timing. Thanks!

Thanks a lot, I try to add some visual flair when I can as it can get a bit stale just watching back clips from the films as they play out. I try to time things to illustrate the ideas and occasional punchline. Thanks for the kind comment.

Verhoeven a wonderfully understated director (& I'm not been facetious) with a verbal reference to TR ending 'blue skies that's new...' at recall hq. I always seen movie as a reality, with quaid replacing Hauser as Quaid becomes the dominant personality and who he really is. Verhoeven truly one off his stunning Dutch movies -soldier of orange been the greatest (in my opinion) and spetters ,the fourth man then his first English language FLESH+BLOOD(85) Spielberg reputedly phoned him and told him to come to the USA after that highly entertaining but controversial movie. He like the American/English Terry Gilliam wants to make his movies his way and if they successful great and if not make another but all have similar thematic lines of DNA of the individual director (unlike say Ron Howard's output which is largely audience friendly and studio friendly) As to Total Recall a true classic with the Austrian oak on top form and a fully committed cast & crew delivering a movie that still works some 30 years after its initial release. I won't mention two pointless remakes of recall and RoboCop but looking forward to audience friendly remake of Showgirls... Great review as always

I think Showgirls has become audience friendly over time, would be interested to see a new interpretation of it. I think Verhoeven’s sensibilities were perfect for it. I agree with you in regards to understatement within Verhoeven’s work, beneath the bombast and spectacle the drama and storytelling is very poignant. The character journeys are fully realised and that’s what makes his great action films connect. His body of work is so impressive and it has been Hollywood’s loss that he decided to make films in Europe at this point in his career.

@@MovieBirthdays as u can tell ii really like his work. Any chance of a flesh+blood review. I can't stick the anodyne movies we get stuck with now. And their weirdly lit scenes. And actors who (not all) are nothing more than clothes horses. Rant over

Excellent stuff. Love the Baudrillard references and the hyper real stuff. I was always drawn to that quote you ended on. It’s pure Satre and possibly an antidote to the existential question of who we are.

An interesting compilation, and thoughtful intriguing insights into a sci fi movie classic - Total Recall. As a sci fi movie buff I had to watch. Just what I needed to see. Drawing on the topics of “reality” and “duality” and what we think it is fits perfectly for today’s society and future generations. Very Ray Kurzweil’s Singularity Is Near. Many conspiracy researchers and whistleblowers such as David Wilcock, Richard Hoagland and the like...would definitely reveal the hidden messages inside such movies and about the secret government “secret space programs” and Trumps Space Force initiative for Mars Colonisation on the red planet. A very insightful movie for those in the know.

Another great video. Could not agree more about Verhoeven, the man shows the explicit, a whole bloody true, satrical hunour and most of the time via a compelling canvas and he does so with first and foremost with entertainment primarily in mind. Even his last film, Elle, IMO is a satire on the so called liberalism viewpoints of society, whilst at the sametime being almost a parody on the French art house scene. As for Total Recall, as Ron Suchet said, a thinking mans action film (IMO Executive Decision belongs to that genre also🤣) and a reactionary satire on the spy and action genres. The hero doesn’t know who he is, the human shields are literally bloody pieces of meat and the whole adventure may well be Quaid’s and in turn the audiences’ dream and an antidote to the anxieties of everyday life. My friends and I have disagreed many times on films, but what we do duly agree on that Verhoeven is the only man who can save the dull monotony that Hollywood has become. Another great video, also what are your thoughts on True Lies? Also how do you think David Cronenberg’s vision for Total Recall would have panned out?
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 3 года назад
Those are some great observations. Beautifully conveyed and as usual I totally agree. To prove your point on Verhoeven even further, the two remakes of Total Recall and Robocop perfectly illustrate your point about Hollywood also, the remakes were toothless, poorly directed and empty films with no sense of the genre or excitement in general. Thanks again for your feedback, see you on the next one.
@spaceodds1985

@@MovieBirthdays To be honest before your comment on the remakes, I actually forgot there were remakes made in the first place on these two films. Haven’t seen the Robocop remake, but I did unfortunately see the Total Recall remake. I was naïvely expecting A glimpse of what David Cronenberg might have done for the film. Of course I was wrong.
