Watching Gord Downie perform live on stage he goes into trance-like state. Gord gets real wrapped up in the mood and moment that at times it appears he is in his own little world but in front of thousands of fans. Something to behold. An artist lost in his art in real time and for everyone to witness. He is missed by many.
“The individual is going to take the meaning that they put on it out, and that’s what it is to them.” IMHO, you just described at least 75% of all human communication. Sometimes that’s a good thing too. Many’s the time someone has referred to something I’ve written and ascribe a meaning to it that’s very flattering (because I actually hadn’t thought it through to reach the concept now attributed to me!). It’s also a useful warning, because it’s easy for us to assume the other guy thinks at least similar to ourselves and ‘got’ at least the mean points of what I told him… and yet - often - he doesn’t.
The older I get, the more I like them, now that they aren't overplayed on Canadian radio. Saw them headline a festival once in the early '90s, they were great live.
So true. I took a break from them for 15ish years. It’s like I am discovering them again for first time and have much more deep connection now. …and the band is incredible. Young dumb me had no idwa
When you gave us that repetitive Bass line sound from the 90's I started singing STP's Vasoline👍. The "whoops" sound I thought was more of a American Roy Rogers sound 🤔😊
First of all thank you Todd for the request. Day for Night is the best album by the hip. Every track is great. I personally like their studio material over their live stuff, even though i did have a good time seeing them here in Toronto.
He is talking about a married couple fighting, and all the little things that cause arguments in a relationship. "I do the rolling, you do the detail" is talking about painting a room; and the excitement about getting a job done, but arguing during the process. The cat s indifferent or just furious, it seems their never neither. A nod at either partner in the relationship answering "Im fine," or anything along those lines. Clearly annoyed. The hair bird looked around and said I like your hair the best, to build her nest, obviously selecting a partner. All references to marriage and then living life together, and the small annoyances or quibbles we have. In relationships we are like "Thugs" and we have too stay tough, but it is constant, , relationships are hard; So it's thugs in perpetuity.
Other than Gord, no one in the band really stands out, but they all fit together well & the songs are great. America really missed the boat with The Hip. Sorry.
Don't be so quick to speak for all Americans! I've seen the band over 20 times, and those in the states that like them are rabid fans. But I understand your point. They never hit like they should have here in the States. American radio was too lost in the flavor of the month in the 90s. Poets got airplay, but that was about it, sadly. And, in my opinion, Poets is far from their best work. Form one Hip fan to another, cheers!
I think I would like this song if it had been produced/engineered differently. The guitars were overbearing, the vocals, percussion and bass were too muddy for my taste.
