His onstage persona and offstage were so wildly different. He was like a posessed man on stage entranced by each song. Privately and in interviews, he was THE most humble, quiet, introspective and generous people according to anyone who interacted with him. All these things were said long before he passed away BTW - he was a legend and a musical monster but at his soul, he was a wonderful human who donated endless time and resources particularly to first nations causes that were close to his heart.

Another great Canadian band. Gordie had so much passion on stage. We loved them here at home. Unfortunately he got brain Camcer. Did the final tour so sick. Would come on stage and come alive. His memory was failing but would remember the songs. The sets he demanded they do!!!! So much respect for the man.... Had an amazing voice. Cheers

Throughout their career, they never really rehearsed their shows. They would just take the stage and let Grod by Gordie. But they did a lot of rehearsals for their final tour. Which makes all the sense on the world.

One of my favourite memories of the band was when they did a live show on TV in Canada. We have our own version of MTV called MuchMusic and they used to have a show back in the 80s and 90s called "Intimate and Interactive" in which bands would show up in the crammed MuchMusic studio space, they would stuff it with as many fans as they could fit, open some patio doors out onto the street which was also blocked off and stuffed with fans and let the band play live and take questions from the audience directly, over telephone or pre-recorded video. When the Hip did it someone from the local audience requested they play a song of theirs called Cordelia, Gord turned to the band and asked everyone whether they remembered it well enough to play it as it wasn't part of their set list and then asked the guy to come up and sing it with him as Gord wasn't sure if he remembered all the lyrics. The guy was actually brave enough to do it (badly) but it reinforced how humble these guys were. EDIT: For anyone interested, I actually found that performance on RU-vid.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tMSenTo7Mj4.html

Gord Downie has the music running through his body! One of my favourite Hip songs. Thanks Todd! Last summer there was a movie being shot on my street in front of my apartment block and I was singing this song. 😂

This much I know is true: I was lucky enough to see the Hip for the first of many times in May of 1989 at a small dive bar near the Buffalo airport called Sinbads. While I was stone cold sober, they fully and completely hypnotized me. Literally. Gord was wearing the same soaked black shirt and I contend I now have super powers because some of Gords sweat got into my eyes. They were so many levels better live even though their studio recordings are fantastic. When they recorded album's, they walked into the studio with their 'set list', played the whole thing start to finish live and direct, and that was it. 1 take. 2 hours for an album.

Saw The Hip several times in the 90s and 2000s and loved them. With Gord Downie, you're either with him having a blast, or you don't really get it. I knew some people who couldn't take his live persona, but it was the type of thing where much of it was improvised according to what was going on during the show. I also love Midnight Oil. Peter Garrett has a similarly energetic (but more dancy) kind of stage presence. I consider the Tragically Hip to be the sound of Canada for a generation of rock fans, and I've heard the same said of Midnight Oil for Australia.

Thanks for this request Todd Justin reminds me of Rob Baker. Maybe it would be more obvious if Justin played Lead guitar. The singing Gord has a unique delivery, and is a great poet. Sometimes I prefer singing Gord's studio delivery to his live performances of the lyrics, but the intensity is always captivating. Justin, now that you have teased us with a possible Hip album reaction, I am excited. "Up to Here" would be a great place to start, "Fully Completely" is another great choice.

Imo there best performance is New Orleans is Sinking (Westwind). Or anything from woodstock 99 was great too. I was there and what was cool was anyone who had a Canadian flag was able to go up front and center.

Given your comments about him keeping you right in the moment (and, good lord, who said he can't sing?), it's worth noting the lyrics of one of his most recent posthumous singles: "They say you gotta stay in the moment. What they don't say is that the moment is a wild place."

I will never understand why people introduce others to bands with their favorite live versions of songs or even why anyone would want their first experience with a band be reliant on the huge array of shitty possibilities of bad mixing, mics, performances, when they should gain an appreciation for the band and respect their work with the studio recordings first. I'm not saying all live recordings suck but the true way to experience a band live is to be there in person. Side note: I saw the tour for this first album when they were playing clubs and the venue in Calgary was the Silver Dollar Action Center (glorified bowling alley/casino) and was actually early to be front & center. The show was incredible, beyond words until at the end of night I found an empty stall outside where my vehicle once was, stolen not towed, oh well😅. The Hip's sound didn't transfer well imo with the larger arenas for the next couple of tours when they became popular, the sound at the Saddledome was overdriven and echoed terribly, maybe I was spoiled by the more personable experience of seeing them in the smaller venue first idk. One thing was always a constant, Gord Downie gave everything he had on stage at EVERY gig they did like a young Rod Stewart or that guy who sang for the Stones (only better, sorry I cringe just seeing a picture of Jagger) & yes like Weiland to (saw Scott live 4 times, STP & VR).

13:09 Too many people are hardwired to listen to vocalists with very little personality, who can sing but have no real emotion. Looking at you, Liam Gallagher. Tori Amos also comes to mind. She sometimes goes right off-key in emotional moments of a song. MOST pop stars aren't allowed to do that.

I 💯 agree. I love the band and own many of their albums, but live I find that Gord is not that great live and way over the top. I have always been of the mindset that most of time less is more. I would suggest to listen to the studio version of that song, which to me is way better than this live performance.

You say "you're not doing that" again. But Tragically Hip is a ridiculous band. Every Canadian I know argues over whether Rush or Tragically Hip is the best Canadian rock band. I love both, but I take a lot of heat for putting The Hip at #1, with Rush at second place. I've seen both bands in concert 5 times each.
