The placebo effect it's a very, very powerful one! Another "effect" I usually find super interesting is when you set your goals higher than normal. Like: I have to do 15 push-ups instead of 10. The moment I start the exercise, my mind is already thinking about reaching AT LEAST 12-13 push-ups, and once there it just tell me to give up as soon as possible. The same would have happened at 8-9 push-ups in a 10 repetition set. Our mind is super powerful guys!

I fix I personally use for this, is telling myself I'm gonna stop at 10 and 10 is easier for me but then I just push on.

I had my hip replaced, and was given a morphone pump to manage my pain. I was pressing it, and I felt better. I was pain free when just lying there. The interesting thing? I was pressing the button, but not far enough for it to click and release morphine. I only found this out when the nurses came to give me more morphine and found it hadn't been used.

I'm a skeptic by heart and I usually wonder to myself if I would do more harm than good by telling someone that there isn't any evidence behind placebo-inducing treatments.

I think most people are aware that other people think their Crystals or Special Socks are useless and dont work. That doesnt stop them believing it anyway. Similar to religion or other strong beliefs, there is always info to support for or against

The one bad thing about being aware of placebo is that you can never experience the benefits of placebo. This goes beyond products as well, such as motivational speakers impacts etc. It's a double edged sword. On one hand you are more aware of your own thinking, on the other hand, you can't experience benefits of placebo.

Great video Ben! I had that balance test done to me, where I balanced with and without holding a mobile phone and the difference was profound. I couldn't balance at all holding the phone. I couldn't work it out and thought it had to be the placebo effect. so I tried it a bunch of times with other people, to try and eliminate the placebo effect. I got them to do the balance test holding a bag with different products in it that they didn't know what they were. then swapped it with a mobile phone and the results were the same. they couldn't balance when I put the phone in. can you put it to the test for me and solve the mystery! is it placebo or do mobile phones actually mess up our balance?

Thank you for bringing up the placebo effect. I see nothing wrong with athletes getting what they need mentally to perform. I use BFR and scraping, and despite a limited study base, I perform far better when I use them consistently. I feel more confident, which allows me to be more explosive, with no additional cost to recovery or risk of injury inherent to the treatments. That philosophy of use is acceptable in my book. It's a damn shame that any time some big athlete says "this works for me", average Joe's can be tricked into thinking that's all there is to it.

Alex Hutchinson's Endure has an interesting chapter about several performance enhancing recovery techniques (special oil, massage, hot baths, ice baths, etc.) which each individually had a 1-3% effect; combined, they still only had a 1-3% effect.

I haven’t read the entire book myself yet, but in the book “you are the placebo” by Joe Dispenza, he talks about the same thing, and how the placebo effect can literally kill you if you believe you’re going to die, or heal you if you believe very strongly that you’re gonna be alright. He talks about much more, but the thing about the little girl and the candy reminded me of that book, do you could perhaps check it out if you want. I’m still kinda skeptical about some of the stuff he talks about, but the person who recommended it to me is a really reliable person who knows a fair bit about how to get better, spirituality, and exercises to relieve pain and solve problems with the body.

@@BenEcho I agree with that. Unless it is something that cannot exist in the universe. But my point was more, you mentioned these companies were selling these products that are fake. As some kind of secret "science". without knowing what it was about. I feel it was more, these companies exploiting these systems that have been around for hundreds of years, and not really saying where they come from. Or maybe even knowing much about. Much of this stuff is about acupressure. I am not an expert, but I have done some practice with it, though not professionally. It isn't a Placebo so much, when someone does it right and understands what they are doing. When you apply pressure to a point in one spot of the body, and it effects another part of the body just as the system says, and it is confirmed by someone who you didn't tell would do anything to the other spot, it might be more than a belief. But I would suggest researching acupressure and meridians, before concluding it was just some bullshit, fake science some scam companies made up. I like your channel and many of your videos. I had just recently subscribed.

Ok but Ben that study you cited also saw a larger/more consistent boost in performance for the pre workout supplement. Let's not completely throw the baby out with the bath water here. Placebo effect is usually only about 50% as effective as the real thing, leading me to believe that psychology of the individual plays a massive role. The more credulous you are the better it works. Edit: this is partially mentioned later in the video. Making my critique somewhat null and void :)
