The reason gravel is so hot is because of cars. Yup cars. When your on gravel your not on the road with cars. It's much safer to ride without cars around you. That's a very good reason just to buy a bike for it. I'm all in on gravel. Got an old Trek and brought it up to date with some new parts. I love it. imgur.com/a/qcPyrUE

Also part of the reason why I bought a gravel bike. Another advantage is when on the shoulder of a road a gravel bike is way more comfortable/stable vs a road bike thanks to those 40mm+ tires.

A paddlers perspective. Gravel bikes are the 16ft Prospector Canoe of the bike world. (I'm a canoeist too!) My 16ft Novacraft Prospector will go anywhere that my kayaks will go. It will surf waves like my playboat, just not with the same repertoire of tricks. It will run hard-ish rivers and drops like my creek boat, just get swamped a bit more. It will paddle on the Sea and big lakes like a sea kayak, just with a bit more care, skill and judgement needed. And here in lies the rub.... If I exercise a little more care, skill, judgement (and effort) I reap a greater reward from my Gravel Bike in any given environment, just as I do in my Prospector. And that is much more satisfying than having my care, skill and judgement either compensated for or negated by any of my other bikes/boats. It's just more satisfying.

I tried going all casual wear for a year on the bike but then i started wishing that my shorts had a little more padding and didn't snag on seat when i moved around. Then i started wishing that i had some convenient pockets for storing my phone and food that were out of the way but still usable. I know there is a new breed of middle ground clothing choices available that could work but regular cycling clothing just does the job so well.

I also like gravel bikes as you can swap parts around to change use of bike even further than bike was intented for . So you can literally have one bike dose all . More people riding bikes? I don’t know what it’s like in the Canadian Maritimes, but right now, as we are told to avoid crowds and cower under a comforter, our LBSs in Memphis are SLAMMED. The weather is nice and people want to get outside in a responsible way. Indeed, the Manager at our name brand store (I won’t name the brand. But it rhymes with “Heck”) told me that they are so busy, they don’t have time to assemble the new inventory that is piling up. If these new folks keep riding on our steadily-growing bike infrastructure, that’s a good thing.

I grew up on a rural (farm) gravel road during the 60s and rode my kids single speed bike on those dirt roads for years. Never got one flat tire, no special "gravel" tires, no special frame, just cruiser bars with plastic grips. Back then I didn't know any better so I just rode. It's a bit funny all this fuss about "gravel grinding". I go out on the gravel to get away from the traffic and noise and ride about 6 to 10 mph and just take in all the scenery, the smells and even the occasional farm dog the chases me down the road. I am rejuvenated.

Loved the gaming style edits. Like to see more of those were it’s appropriate. I have to disagree though as I can do everything you suggested clothes wise and adventure wise on my mtb hard-tail. It is literally a set of drop handle bars away from being a gravel bike. Just like John Tomac back in the day. That is marketing for you! The check and balance is how much off-road vs. on-road you intend to ride. More on-road go for gravel. More off-road go for a lightweight mtb hard-tail with a decent range of gears. Up until recently, a hard-tail was my daily driver with the ability to tear legs off, on / off the road and switch up for long 100mile + day adventures.

More Spinney wisdom. So that's why I like my 9-speed Surly with the wide tires and the rack on the back, even though I can't get that perfect cadence, like I can on the road bike. It's not just about less traffic (I ride in Central NJ; there's ALWAYS traffic). It's about that the Surly will do anything... including a grueling local climb (like I did yesterday, coronavirus or no). And I've ridden it with lycras and with track pants, turtleneck, and jacket; the Surly doesn't care.

The only reason gravel appeals to me and my friends is that you can ride on roads with little or no traffic. I hate being on the side of a highway with cars/trucks whizzing by - it feels very dangerous and is loud and obnoxious.
