The truth about aikido ukemi part #2 the conclusion to the first video that we posted the other day. Lenny Sly aikido sensei of the #roguewarriors training compound finishes up this 2 part series on why and how we take the rolls and breakfalls that we do while training in aikido. Lenny again shows some things on why we take breakfalls off of finger locks and a few other joint lock throws like kokyunage and hiji shime.

The poor student! Lenny can you please, please have more than one student during these videos? I do Aiki-jujutsu and can vouch that these techniques hurt and am almost cringing at the techniques being performed on one solitary student! Still a great video on a very misunderstood topic.

Vaughan MacEgan For the amount of demonstrations he's doing, one uke's plenty. He obviously chose this guy as his uke because he's confindent in his ability to take ukemi and not get hurt, which is the whole point of learning to take proper ukemi.

If it were just about ukemi it would be fine! But there were a few times in this video and the previous vid filmed just before this were he told him not to ukemi and he was in quite obvious pain. Poor guy, all up there was around 50 mins of footage and he took quite a beating - I hope he iced up after they were finished.

Vaughan, Rod is an excellent student. His Ukemi is bar-none. Lenny wants to give us explosive demonstrations, and Rod is his best candidate to do that. I believe his other senior students are away doing schooling. I believe one is an artist of some sort. On his website, he uses all his students in the videos. and let me tell you, he has atleast 100 videos on their that were not released on youtube. The videos have better quality also (not sure if quality is lost uploading to YT.) Finally, the videos are more based on detailed instruction. It is like you are there in the dojo with him.

Second remark (sorry): it's very good to hear you say that 'applying the technique only works when they resist, it doesn't work when they don't resist'; 99% of the youtube keyboard warriors shout the exact opposite... that it only works uke doesn't resist and you couldn't do this technique to a non-compliant attacker ;) ; that being said, you have no idea how many (advanced level) aikidoka look at me funny when I don't just do some acrobatic flip when they apply a technique... because, well, it doesn't work and I'm not there to placate them and boost their ego... I don't jump/fall/roll if I don't feel like I should! Some even told me literally that ''you have to take ukemi because it's expected of you'; well... no, I don't jump through hoops just to make tori feel good about himself, even if the technique was crap!

A question for those who claim that aikido and aiki jujutsu are fake and bullshido, and do not understand the essence of the training. Let's imagine that I'm practicing gun shooting in a stationary target. You can say: well, yes, it's easy when the target does not move and does not attack you, it's not a real situation. So, would you be willing to attack me and try? :) So we can have real situation. :)Thank you Lenny and guys for all effort and video lessons.

I love how people who crap on Aikido for Ukemi seem to forget that this is nothing new to the Japanese, and maybe others too, arts. Yes, it has it's own flavor of how it is done, but even Karate has it's versions of Ukemi. And it has always been about protecting the receiver of the technic from harm.

Yet another great video Sly Sensei. Once again you presented yourself bold, blunt and brutally honest. I trained in Hapkido for a year Straight and Yoshitshune Jujitsu, those techniques hurt, even when you properly take Ukemi. Those people who talk smack need to feel a few techniques, even at 1/4 power and without the intent to "real-world" apply it and I bet they won't be talking about how it doesn't work anymore. You are a great instructor, very knowledgeable, versed, and your breakdown of the Bunkai is awesome. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, your family and everyone in your Dojo Family. Fucking genius. Never thought of aikido this way. I almost left aikido for judo and wrestling (i do all of those)...still, I would like to hear your thoughts on, maybe, aikido defence vs wrestling attacks (single and double leg takedowns) or about differences between techniques and tactics. Thank you for your videos Lenny. Another aspect of Ukemi that you may want to consider. Ukemi means "receiving the technique". Ukemi is the students workout. One cannot get strong from the inside out, unless one takes ukemi. Getting knocked down and getting back up makes the student stronger and gives one an intimate knowledge of body mechanics. Also ukemi offers the keys to counters: kaeshi waza. Just a thought.

Very good. You are Correct, uke(s) have to take proper ukemi otherwise there is a lot of hurt. I have practiced over forty years....I taught Aikido seminar several years ago and the Sensei .... afterwards mentioned that it was 'hard style' cself defence' 'combat' aikido..they were not used to it... You are improving... Merry Christmas. Keep Aiki Spirit up.

Congrats, Lenny!!! And thanks. It´s very nice to hear this kind of things from an experienced martial artist. I do not practice Aikido (maybe one day I will) but Hakko Ryu jujutsu (different but some common grounds). It seems that very few ukes understand that they have to actually "play the game" and really attack, punch, kick or grab; it´s very frustrating to understand and research the proper application of a technique/principle/movement when you are facing a "noodle" type uke or someone who rolls/falls before the application just to avoid having any pain. These mat pals usually complain when you are the uke and you grab strongly, resist the application, or simply you do not fall/roll "as expected" (even if you feel nothing). I find pointless to do that!!! You cannot improve of your uke does not tell you how it feels, whether it works or not and if your uke does not play the game properly by resisting and properly attacking. Love your videos and your approach. I bet you and the sihan at my dojo would be good training mates (I do hear the same things from him every training).

I've been watching a lot of your videos. My sensei's style is basically the polar opposite of yours - he's all about the spiritual side of Aikido. "It's not an enemy attacking you, it's your brother reaching out for help," is one of his quotes that sums up his philosophy. That said, I really appreciate your perspective. Your style of teaching technique is very informative, and your explanation of ukemi in this video is particularly enlightening. I'm definitely going to use some of the tidbits of wisdom you have imparted here to explain aikido to some of my friends that don't quite 'get it', but want me to show them some technique. Thank you. Keep it up.

My Sifu says, "The art will not fail you, you will fail the art." Many people say our art is bullshit because we do not draw blood, break bones, or knock out our training partner. They just do not understand that we take care of each other so we don not run out of training partners. They do not understand we are family. If we applied the techniques on the naysayers for real, they could be maimed for life or worse.

So refreshing to see someone that has an understanding of how things work. In another video you do talk about applying techniques at a different angle. Might mention that sometimes different angles are used to allow safe ukemi or they would be landing on head breaking neck. So many talk about pressure testing aikido. Part of the reason of Aikido ukemi is the pressure testing of martial techniques. Using this form attack and response can be practiced at realist speeds once ukemi is learned. Before techniques had to be done slowly or softer leaving techniques out as sports as judo did. Ueshiba didn't want to do this. Final note Kono sent some of his top Judo students to train under Ueshiba. Sorry for the rant , this is good stuff ,Thanks for presenting quality demos and explanations. ...

Joe Rogan is a hypeman. I happen to like Joe Rogan, but he is very opinionated. I think if he meets Lenny Sly Sensei, he will understand a bit more. We can't really blame him, though. Because, like Lenny Sly Sensei said, Joe is seeing the other 99% of Aikido out there where technique is not followed through with. Hopefully, more Aikido instructors jump on the Lenny-Train and start evolving their art to be modernized.

These explanations are spot on. I am by no means an Aikido guy but I know you HAVE to have ukemi PERIOD ! When I first saw jiujutsu in the 70s in a demo after a cómp we were all in awe. This back belt took this guy all over the floor. But he got up was it crap ?! No. He knew how to fall as much as his senseI knew what he was doing. I’m trying to apply small circle in my stuff and I see your stuff and say oh wow he’s using small circle theories. But point is you’re right. So I’m getting what I can to incorporate into my training. Unfortunately after years even the best uke can reap pain from it but hopefully not. You have to listen to your body. there’s that fine line in all training. But if you don’t train realistically then you’re setting yourself up for trouble in the street. I’ve never had a fight in the street and I plan on keeping that record ha but I still want to be the best I can. So thank you for sharing your videos so much.

You keep stressing that in the real world chances are slim to none that you get attacked by a 'trained fighter'; in principle I agree... but a very large number of punks and street hooligans actually ARE training in kickboxing or muay-thai just because they want to learn how to bully people; if you get in a situation where 2 or more of such guys gang up on you and immediately start throwing punches or kicks (which most aikidoka don't typically train in a traditional aikido dojo), it's very difficult to spontaneously and efficiently apply an aikido technique; maybe if you're VERY experienced in aikido (like you)... but for the majority of people who just train aikido as a hobby, it's not going to be helpful. I did some friendly sparring against competitive TKD guys/girls... and if I don't keep ma'ai very close and immediately do irimi and atemi, it's nigh impossible to defend against unscripted attacks; even if kickboxers only have 2 or 3 years of training, reacting to their attacks is extremely difficult. It already takes a significant amount of training and experience to spar with other aikidoka in a fully random attack/defense style exercise... doing that against kickboxers (even if they train in dodgy low-class schools) would be very very difficult. What would you recommend in such a situation? e.g. one assailant, low to medium kickboxing skills; unscripted (real-world) attack forms... (and I don't mean a pro UFC fighter, just a street-punk who can do basic kicking/punching); happy new-year, from Belgium ;)
@pandabearlp
@pandabearlp 6 лет назад
My suggestion would be practicing your TaiSabaki (hand deflections). TaiSabaki is the key to all applications. Whether they punch, kick, grab, or try to take you to the ground...your TaiSabaki will deflect that attack. Once your Taisabaki avoids the attack, it opens the attacker up for applications to be applied. Randori is also good practice for ''freestyle'' attacks.

what i found in ukemi is that when u come to spontanious stage, when nage can do what ever technique he wants at full speed, its like u update your brains. in tori role It helped me to deffend against no agreed attack. its like your body is responding very fast to attack same like your body responds in ukemi. good ukemi helped me big time to do good. stuff when we do jiuwaza. no agree attack, just come and get it. i belive ukemi is the most important thing.

Love the ascent of using fucking profanity's when trying to get this over as I was saying this before you probably started aikido LOL!! I'm 64 and been practising since 1975. I did judo before my stint of military service and amateur boxing when in service. Also did Goju Karate and Wing chun Gung fu before I came across Tomiki Aikido in 1975... Practised for 18 years and went my own way after the love & harmony "intellectual" types took over... Love it and totally agree with everything you've said Lenny... Keep up the good work... I wish I had the kit to have done this years ago when I was still running my club at the Uni of Winchester UK... This was my last "aikido" video and was done entirely off the cuff in 2006 by their media students who wanted to do a Uni article for their activities... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YWiY5Xrbl1I.html

For saying Aikido is peaceful...lol. I find peace in knowing my TaiSabaki works and allows me to enter. Entering was the hardest thing for me to grasp as you instinctually want to back up when approached with aggression. I work with a bunch of younger males that like to horseplay a lot. They know nothing about Martial Arts and resist every technique. I constantly twist them up with yubidori, hand deflections, kotegaeshi, nikkyo, sankyo...etc. I find peace in their facial expressions when they wince in pain...hahahaha. They say, "She knows 'some shit'.'' lol. It's good practice for me as they keep trying to sneak attack me. One day they scared me as I was walking through a doorway. When they yelled ''Boom'', my hands came up in a kiriage-suriage movement. I find peace in knowing hand deflections are engrained in me and I didn't shutter from fear.

yes no bs about it. An attacker out on the street will not take the fall. They will get hurt big time. It will be quick as fast as fast as they attack us. That just the martial way, we not artist as they say.

I have nothing bad to say about you I don’t know why every time you’re using the F word and going off because I got nothing bad to say I’m just trying to learn from you and when you’re using Japanese term analogy it’s really hard for me to follow since I’m new to your site I wish you explain when used to Japanese word so I can catch up
