Anubias and Java Fern are actually quite tricky and dubious choices for "easy." Your options are better for reasons you provided.

People get their expert level lighs for plants that would actually prefer a horrid $10 car accent light. These were considered easy when all we had was flourescent or halogen and beginners weren't clamoring for $150+ full sun simulators. We associate low light plants with easy because our collective thoughts about it haven't quite caught up with the technology yet.

I'm having fantastic luck with house plants growing outside the tank with the roots dangling inside the tank. They get natural light from a nearby window. No algae because the plants use the nutrients. Happy fish, crystal clean water with great parameters.

I am a noobie myself with a deep substrate comprised of pond mud, capped with sand. It’s only been one month under an LED light, and I have already trimmed back my Elodia, Bacopa, and Green Foxtail, all of which have doubled in size. I stuck the trimmings back in the soil and have seen growth in the trimmings as well :)

Well said!! ' an easy plant is only easy in the right tank with the right set up!" Over the many years I have kept aquarium plants, it has been trial and error. Learning which plants do well in my tank. Many plants labeled easy will not grow in my hard water. Vallisneria and java fern is labeled easy, but struggles and eventually dies in my tanks. Even with the best ferts and water changes!

I used to think only bulb types were easy. Then I got Trident Java Fern and got a jungle in no time. So I got some Anuibus Nana Petite and unfortunately got moss with it. Well, the moss took and was really easy until it took over the tank. But, the Anuibus loved this and grew like wild in the shaded tank. My tank has a Fluval Shrimp substrate in it for plants and the Java Fern now grows into that substrate. I have to trim or take out plants each month now. But the anuibus was supposed to be a hard plant, but wasn't. Now I know I can grow it easy and so can others. Take Care and Stay Safe, Alex.

I never had any success with Anacharis, and Java ferns hate me. LOL But Crypts and Anubias species all grow great in all my setups. I've also developed a love for pgymy chain sword and Italian val. My local water is hard and alkaline, and I know that can definitely impact plants - both positively and negatively, depending on species. They grow very easily for me. It definitely pays to experiment with various plants different people find "easy".

Excellent video! Always read ahead, don’t just jump into the hobby. I’m speaking from experience and trial and error. You’ll also find which plants grow well for you, stick with them . Find another plant that you see is growing well for you. Trim them and put in another tank. Every plant that you can replant it’s trimmings is money you’re saving and like Alex said you can sell back to your local aquarium and fish store. 👍

Very informative video for all fish keepers. However the "easy plants" for me, actually do seem easy as I can keep algae at bay with low lighting and a couple of snails and keep up with water changes. Sure, for some people root tabs and a fertilized substrate is way easier but it comes down to each individual

I have very hard water. 500ppm gh 300ppm kh, 8.0ph I can keep many kinds of ludwigia, specifically the red ones, alive and well. In fact I've had the most success with all kinds of stem plants. Cabomba and Tiger lotuses seem to do well as well. A couple died back, but most lived. Swords also do well in my water, and ofc floating plants like duckweed and frogbit did well.

I've never had much luck with java fern. Grows fine but never all that healthy. My first foray into plants was with a starter pack as well and it was kind of discouraging. From that, however, I'm still harvesting plants from that bunch over 2 years later. So now I have a couple of staples that I recommend to people. Dwarf sag and lobelia cardinalis. First one's just dynamite for carpeting and as far as stems go, cardinalis is really low maintenance. I've grown my fair share of bacopa as well now.

Hey! I enjoy the content you have on this channel a lot, having deep dives into things is a great way to learn more about the subject. I understand you really enjoy being able to study and learn to bring it to us, I also understand that the attention span of most of us is very short. My suggestion would be, post short videos through out the week and then have one video where you dive into a subject for a extended video! Being able to watch those videos through out the work week would be alot easier for alot of us. Then on the weekends when we normally have more free time we’re able to sit and watch for a longer period of time.

Great video and beautiful shop! You are so right: easy plants are only easy in the right tank with the right set up. I can grow things in some of my tanks but not others - it clearly depends on the tank lighting, substrate, and water which are very different in each of my tanks. So each tank has it's own easy and hard plants and they are not the same! Just picked up a new 40g to replace a 20g - have wood soaking out back, cleaned off a 5 large pieces of dragon stone, going through all my supplies to make sure I will have great substrate for plants, and planning to spread the 20g tank substrate on top. Looking forward to seeing which of my plants love the new setup:) Fingers crossed on my p. ridleyi when I move some in - it's grown large and lovely over a year in one of my tanks and died in all of my other tanks. Maybe this will be lucky tank 2.

Unfortunatly I think many online plant suppliers who do plant packs stick in plants that arnt selling in the plant packs rather than provideing a balanced pack of aquarium plants and my advice on a good light If the superfish scaper LED is available near you its a very good light and more important its the BEST value for money PAR to price Ive found will grow high light plants at cheaper price than most makers lights cost to grow low to medium light level ones

This is exactly why I'm still on the fence about trying my first planted aquarium. There is more to it than the common comments I see people tell newbies "buy plants" I am happy I'm keeping my fish alive and constantly learning about everything and anything I can about their health and happiness. Plus i really enjoy the addition of my pothos and other plants I know i can manage. I have to be willing to take care of everything that goes in or above my tanks right now my "fear of plants" would hinder that. Which is why i love these videos though, i can still learn a lot and if or when I'm ready to try it I'll know i really took time to learn.
@alancarter9471
@alancarter9471 Год назад
Someone, once said try several different plants, perhaps from a local hobbiest, and see what works. Then if you have any that don't make it, then look into those plants vs the plants that made it, and see if you can figure out why they didn't work for you. When I try new plants, I will generally put 3 stems, or whatever, of the new plant in several of my aquariums and see which ones do well. Of course after researching them, and understanding my water parameters on the tanks they go into first. At this point in most of my tanks I won't be making changes for new additions. Therefore making the addition of the new plant doesn't complicate things. Also don't be afraid of failure. I went from keeping some of the hardest fish, expert invertebrates, and other non-photosynthetic corals in the saltwater hobby to killing duckweed, and the consensus online is that is an impossibility. Well not if you have a ton of flow at the surface of the tank. It will kill most if not all floating plants. Also keep the changes you make at one time to a tank minimal, and space them out, so that if something doesn't work out it's easier to figure out why. If your especially worried about losing a particular plant, hold off on buying it untill you can perhaps keep a similar type of plan thriving, or give a stem or two or three to someone else in the hobby who you know can keep it thriving under the pretense that they give you trimmings if yours don't work out for you, or worse case scenario, if you have a tank crash. Also remember that for everything people have said there is someone who has found an exception, so don't be afraid of going against the norm once comfortable and try new things. Hope this helps. 😊

@@alancarter9471 yes I appreciate this and your experiences. One of the things i love most about the hobby is the never ending amount of things to learn and still be able to do what works for you or what you like, ans there is loads of information when you know your reliable sources. I've considered freeing up (when possible) one of my 5g cubes and trying a fishless planted scape so i pay attention to everything with the plants and not derail my focus on my fish. Thank you so much.

You really do have the most accurately informative hobbyist vids, thank you for putting out solid information for people. I do disagree with you on 1 thing - lighting - no need to spend big$$$ at all (co-op is just as overpriced and not much better than the rest). I had been using Hygger 24/7 lights and they are amazing and fairly priced, but still too much. As I expand my fishroom, I have been using simple 5000k led shop lights from amazon (10 for foot lights cost $130). The other thing I will say is ... why use fertilizers at all? If someone sets up a planted tank it is because they want fish and plants - so just add more fish to feed the plants. 😁 Thanks again and please keep making your videos, they are definitely the best info any beginner could hope to find.
@Handygrrl
@Handygrrl Год назад
Why use fertilizers? Well, plants need a whole lot more than just nitrates, which is supplied by fish and invertebrates. Some plants take up nutrients in the water column, some take up nutrients by their roots. Other conditions in the tank and substrate and lighting provided or not can make nutrient uptake inefficient.

Im trying to figure this out, but I have a 75 gallon tank that I set up with sand (if I could do it over again, I would put dirt and then sand cap with thick substrate) however, I have what I have now. The middle of the tank has about 4" of sand and the edges are pretty sparse with sand. I use a water softener on our house. I am using root tabs for my planted plants and right now I have corydoras that are burying poop so I dont think I will vacuum the tank bottom very much now. I am reading about softener water (we are using salt on our whole house water softener, not potassium). I see that having this is not going to let my plants thrive and it will eventually hurt my fish over time. I now have 13 plants in my tank. Anubius, java fern, new and small val, some dwarf hair grass, and 3 swords that have not grown and have been in there on a root tab for over a month. They aren't dead, but they are not doing good - not melting yet, but some leaves are getting veiny and see-thru on one plant. Here is my question..... With a water softener, should I slowly be adding in Seachem Equilibrium when I do water changes and water top offs?

Alex, I have a mystery for you. About a week ago I set up an old tank that has been in storage for 2 years now. (No water. just gravel and a dead cory skeleton.) I removed everything and thoroughly cleaned the tank with vinegar. After setting up the tank (adding a base + sand + gravel and dragonstone) and adding water for a week to dark start. I noticed 2 or 3 tiny fry, the tiniest I have ever seen. they are the size of a newborn neo shrimp. maybe a bit smaller. I have no clue where they came from as i only have shrimps and guppies in another tank and didn't add anything in this one, not even plants. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. My guess is that they were on the dragonstone somehow and i heard kilifish lay dormant eggs. i honestly have no clue.

Is it to late to pull back the sand and add some bags of..eco-complete and cover back with soil?

Easy plants: floating and terrestrial. Those are fool-proof imo. As I'm learning I have a mix of a few different varieties. My ludwigias are doing very well, even get a bit of colour at the tip, but my lighting is not ideal. I also have very fine sand, which I hear can be hard on the root system of some plants.

Any experience with having goldfish and darters in the same tank? I recently set up a 55g native species tank. The current stocking is 10 orange throat darters. My original plan was to add one pumpkinseed fish as the centerpiece, but I'm not 100% sure they would get along. I also have a 29g with a wakin goldfish and I was wondering if I could put it in with the darters. Would that be a bad idea?

Thank you Alexander I've had a few disasters with plants but seem to have got some of them right & they're very healthy. The Java Ferns I bought I left one in the ceramic ring & the other one I separated, the one in the ring is doing a lot better than the separated ones. At a loss to why?

Help! I just found dragonfly nymphs! I removed the plant that I suspect is the culprit but I keep finding them and plucking them! I have 7 shrimp and 11 rasboras and a handful of snails that made themselves at home but so far, nothing seem to be missing. I don't want to have to reset the whole tank cause I just got it cycled. I only have one other tank but it hasn't been cycled yet so I can't move them over. What do?

Least killifish heterandra formosa... thats what comes to mind instantly. But there are more too, elassoma will take up the water collumn in a species only tank or biotope... flag fish i suppose too....rainbow shiners and metallic shiners do as well

I don't think crypts are easy, although they are sold as beginner plants. The only way I can keep them from melting is cranking CO2 for a week.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
If they aren't aclimated to under water... yes crypts are like impossible to transition without melt. But if you get under water cuttings, they do well usually.
@globalist1990

I was told they would take a month before I see any growth. They're hanging on so far, no melting, we'll see.

Bruh java Fern for me. Supposed to be easy, all ive done over the last 5 years is get them to make more babies and look uglier until they all die lol. And no I'm not planting them in the substrate. I've tried tons of different things, lighting, substrates, I've even tried growing them in tanks without fish 😂 but I can keep everything else alive no issue haha

I'm laughing because I watched a bunch of small snails gather at the base of some micro sword I had just planted - they got onto the plant, faced the substrate, and started moving forward slowly pulling up the plants as they moved until they could feast on the roots!?! I was so mad but absolutely fascinated!

~TLDR: Im new to the hobby and need help building my microbiome to stimulate sparkling gouramis (and build a healthy ecosystem overall)~ I know it’s not really related to the video but I really need your help with creating a good micro biome for my fish tank. I’m on my first fish tank (you’ve already responded to my comment about it on your backyard culturing video), it’s a 55 gallon (tall unfortunately) with 4 inch deep substrate (mix of sand and rocks with bagged aqua soil, topped with sand on one side and gravel on the other) and working towards being heavily planted. I had it set up with snails for a few weeks before adding 8 blue velvet shrimp and then about 20 isopods which included a couple scuds, detritus worms, and some unknown blobs that I added. Finally a couple weeks later (now) I’ve got 3 sparkling gouramis with 6 more otw to attempt to cut down on hydras which I also apparently added. I’ve really enjoyed watching the sparklers hunt once they got comfortable and I just really want to give my micro biome a head start so I can have lots of cool little critters for the sparklers to hunt. I just have no idea what stuff to add and what source to get it from that won’t be like from a pond and add terrible parasites.
