Gandalf is a wizard from the lord of the rings trilogy. He used magic speratically but his potential is never discussed. I noted every magic spell he does in the extended version of all three movies.
Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, as well as the Balrog are Maiar, basicly Middle Earth's equivalent to angels. So if you're trying to classify them for DnD start with beings of the outer planes like Deva and Demons.
As for power level, the DnD Balor (demon) was originally called a Balrog in OG DnD with the name change being for legal reasons. So, Gandalf would be pretty buff power wise to stand up to one.
This is true. I wasn't specifically trying to relate it to dnd, that is just what happened to come up in google search when finding out what kind of spell or power he was using. I was just using anything and everything to figure out what the power might be. I did come up with battle mage from the elder scrolls also.
The wizards were not allowed to use most of their magical powers. They were sent to middle earth to help organize and encourage its people in the fight against Sauron. They were not meant to all out fight Sauron and his armies.
Fair enough, however we still don't know what their powers were if they never demonstrated them. So that means their full potential is going to be forever a mystery.
@@dev6rehab666 Yeah that's true. Tho the Maiar sang the world into existence. Melkor transformed elves into orcs. One of the Maiar created the dwarves from clay I think. Saruman was able to make the orcs more physically powerful, but he did this with eugenics more than magic, I think. Gandalf and the other "wizards" weren't sent into the world to confront Sauron directly tho. Gandalf feared he was too weak to fight Sauron and did not want to go. I think Gandalf's "notable powers" were Fire and Light. He survived falling a great distance, while being burned by the Balrog's flames, Are supernatural levels of durability and stamina a power? He used lightning in his subsequent ten day battle (after the fall) with the Balrog. And he "killed" the Balrog though he also "died". And then Eru (God) sent him back with greater power than Saruman to complete his mission. But what limits are placed upon him isn't stated. He still doesn't try to go head to head vs Sauron tho.
