What are indulgences?
The reality of indulgences is a bit complicated. As such we will need to discuss the development of penaces and praying and offering suffrages for the dead
We will also dispel a few myths on the way.
Simply put, an Indulgence is a replacement for a penance. Or, rather, someone does the penance for you. You receive the benefit, in exchange for a minor act.

Any Catholic taking their faith seriously will probably quickly realize they're a very rare breed, particularly if you're a convert and you realize just how off-the-path your friends and family are; if this is you, realize you're actually in a very privileged position and do everything you can to become a machine that cranks out indulgences. If nothing else, your reward will be great in heaven. Personally, I've concecrated myself to the Blessed Virgin, and have given her full permission to use any graces or merits I've earned, however meager, as she sees fit. I know she can present my prayers to her Son in a much better way than I ever could, and like at the Wedding at Cana, can direct my efforts so they bear more fruits than anyone could've even imagined.

@brucewmclaughlin9072 Okay, and? If we're gonna use Scripture to pose sarcastic questions at one another, I'd like a turn -- Isn't it strange that whenever Mary's will is shown, it's always perfectly in-line with submitting to God? "I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to thy word." "Do whatever He tells you." If our Lord thought it was fitting to submit Himself to her as His mother, then it's certainly fitting for me to follow His lead. After all, her "soul magnifies the Lord" -- many aspects of His love can be brought into greater focus by learning from her. Consecration to Mary does nothing to hinder "fixing our eyes on Jesus", it actually only helps. Meanwhile, in the verse directly before the one you told me to read, Paul talks of the "cloud of witnesses", cheering us on as we "finish the race." Is that cloud of witnesses in any way distracting us from finishing the race and following Christ? Is Mary not a part of that? If I want any person on my team, I want the woman who did God's will flawlessly, to the point that we have been given God's eternal salvation.

Thank you for this video. The explanation of how fallen Catholics would visit the martyrs in prison, in order for the martyrs' suffering to be applied to them as penance, is beautiful. I had never heard of that, but it makes so much sense. In a similar way, I have always tried to get close to any holy people, especially the consecrated religious or priests. I tell them about my troubles and ask them to pray for me, knowing that they perform far more acts of penance than I do, hoping that their penance may be applied to me and my loved ones. This is how the communion of the saints works; the strong work for the weak, all of us bound together in love.

PRAYER OF ST. GERTRUDE THE GREAT A Prayer which would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. Our Lord told St. Gertrude the GREAT that the following prayer would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. Recommendations: Pray it at least twice, to at least release twice as many souls! After the prayer, ask the Holy Souls to pray for your intentions. "Eternal Father, I offer thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory. -Amen" Our Lady said that if we pray the prayers "we'll deliver so many souls, so many souls!" "The Holy wounds are the treasure of treasures for the souls in Purgatory." BIBLE - 2 Machabees, Chapter 12. Verse 46: "it is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." An indulgence, applicable ONLY to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted when the faithful devoutly visit a cemetery and pray for the departed.

So are indulgences suppose to make reparations for sin to lessen time in purgatory? Sounds like if you don't get any indulgences in your lifetime you'll have to make up for all your sins in purgatory. Is that right? Also do you have to be catholic to receive an indulgence, or can you be protestant and God can just give you one when you do an act that counts for an indulgence?
@AM-iy6qe
@AM-iy6qe 7 месяцев назад
I believe that if you do Acts that would count toward an indulgence without dedicating it to souls in purgatory, then you receive it yourself as pennance, but remember it's all partially paid for unless you are completely detached from sin, and doing communion.
@wms72
@wms72 Месяц назад
You gain an indulgence by performing, with the intention of gaining the indulgence, an act indulgenced by the Holy Spirit-led Catholic Church hierarchy. To gain the indulgence for yourself or for a soul in Purgatory, you must be "in the state of grace," which means you must have God living inside you. An indulgence is remission of some or all of the penance required as reparation for sin already forgiven by God through Jesus's Sacrifice on the Cross.

@carissstewart3211

The teaching on Purgatory is very bare bones and vague. As I said in the video. All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. Sone believe its physical place, some dont. The state of the dead, according to the word of God. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof *thou shalt surely die* {Genesis 2:17} Man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? ... So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their *sleep* O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, *until thy wrath be past* that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, 👉till my change come. ... His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. {Job 14:10, 12-14 & 21} And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in *my flesh* shall I see God. {Job 19:26} Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, *nor knowledge nor wisdom* in the grave, whither thou goest. {The Preacher 9:10} Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; *in that very day his thoughts perish* {Psalm 146:3-4} Then said his disciples, Lord, if he *sleep* he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, "Lazarus is dead." {John 11:12-14} ... Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection 👉at the last day. Jesus said unto her, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet *shall* he live:" {John 11:24-25} But go thou thy way till the end be: for *thou shalt rest* and stand in thy lot *at the end of the days* {Daniel 12:13} For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him *should not perish* but have everlasting life. {John 3:16} And *the serpent said* unto the woman, *Ye shall not surely die* {Genesis 3:4} Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down *in the midst of the stones of fire* {Ezekiel 28:14} ^ (satan always turns the tables on God, for he is the father of lies.) The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. *Who* among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? *He that walketh righteously and speaketh uprightly he that despiseth the gain of oppressions that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil* {Isaiah 33:14-15} If anyone errors in their understanding of this doctrine of the dead, then they will in no way be led to the understanding of the truth, for it will be a stumblingblock unto the decernment of spiritual things, including soilterology and eschatology.

Jesus NEVER said "ALL true instruction to lead to eternal life is to be found in Holy Scripture." DIVINE TRADITION IS THE ORAL WORD OF GOD JESUS TAUGHT HIS APOSTLES. IT'S NOT LESS THAN THE BIBLE. BOTH MAKE UP THE "DEPOSIT OF FAITH." PROTESTANTS THREW AWAY JESUS'S ORAL DIVINE TRADITION SO THEY *DO NOT HAVE THE FULL GOSPEL* Deuteronomy 4:2"You shall not add to the word of God, ... nor take away from it. " Protestants didn't just throw away Divine oral Tradition but also threw 7 books out of their Bibles. Matthew 4:4 says, "Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." Protestants don't have EVERY WORD, only PART of the written Word, none of the Oral Word. Remember, guys, we're NOT Jews. The Holy Spirit fell on the Church, not the rabbis. Jesus and His Apostles used and quoted the Septuagint Bible. Protestants use the rabbis' shorter Masoretic text that didn't EXIST until almost 100 years AFTER Jesus ascended into Heaven. Remember what Jesus said in John 16:12,13: "I HAVE MANY MORE THINGS TO SAY TO YOU, BUT YOU CANNOT BEAR THEM NOW. BUT WHEN HE, THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL TRUTH...." Truth NOT written in the Bible. The Catholic Church guards the oral teaching -- called, not tradition of men, but *Divine Tradition* -- which Jesus taught His Apostles, and which the Bible tells us to keep, in 2Thessalonians2:15, 1Corinthians11:2, 2Timothy1:13, 2Timothy2:2 and Titus1:9. Protestants threw away Jesus's oral teaching, violating: Deuteronomy 4:2, "You shall not add to the word.of God ... nor take away from it," Psalm 118:160 says, "The SUM of Thy Word is Truth" and Matthew 4:4 "Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." Oral Word of God (Divine Tradition) + Written Word of God ( Holy Scripture) = the FULL GOSPEL *ONLY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS THE FULL GOSPEL.* Holy DIVINE Traditions guarded by the Catholic Church are: the 7 Sacraments, especially the detailed ritual of Baptism and various rituals of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the correct interpretation of Scripture, especially teachings on Mary's sinlessness, the intecession of the saints and Purgatory, use of holy water, relics, blessings, indulgences and other sacramentals. Luther worked NO MIRACLES to prove he had authority to change the Church. Instead, 1) he broke his vows, solemn promises to God, he had freely made. 2) He threw away 7 books from Scripture, and 3) he forbade the publication of the Epistle of St. James from his edition of the German Bible because James EXPLICITLY *DENIES* Luther's made-up doctrine of salvation by faith alone. Your rejection of the FULL GOSPEL risks having Jesus say to you, "Depart from Me. I never knew you." Your pride blinds you to the Truth.
