Where is purgatory in the Bible?
If you asked many people where is Purgatory in the Bible, you may either get blank stares, possibly be told, vaguely, it's somewhere in the Old Testament (which is true), perhaps in the letters of St. Paul (which is true), or even still, the 1st Letter of John (which is also true).
However, not many people take note that Jesus himself speaks about an eschatological (i.e., an end times) reality in addition to Heaven and Hell as a real option, contingent upon how we act in this life. And, this third option has traditionally been called purgatory. And not only does Jesus speak about purgatory, but he Jesus speaks about this reality in more than one place in the Gospels using parables to describe it (this video doesn't cover the only place that Jesus speaks of this reality).
So if you've ever wanted to know where is purgatory in the Bible, or perhaps, more specifically, did Jesus ever speak of purgatory, then check out this video above from the video series, The Mass Readings Explained, with Dr. Brant Pitre.

As an independent fundamental Baptist (Protestant), this has changed my mind a bit. I’ll do my own study over the matter (referencing scripture with scripture, no private interpretations, etc) to clarify it for myself. But this is intriguing at the very least.

Verus Luciferum You should look into the more moderate Orthodox View of “The 3rd State”, for want of a better term. We’ve never quite settled on what to call it. You see, nearly everything about the sources for this video and most of the discussions are true. What we disagree on is the conclusion of purgatory as defined is necessarily entirely accurate and absolutely disagree that indulgences are the right way to deal with the problem. There IS a third state, we are required to pray for the dead there, but we Orthodox don’t agree that enough is known to dogmatically define it beyond what’s revealed in scripture, and even if a reconciled Orthodox Catholic Church eventually DOES come to agree on the metaphysic, a condition of reunification will be that all dogmas unique to Rome since 1054 will have to be at least temporarily rescinded until re-confirmed by a LEGITIMATE Ecumenical Council, as we will NEVER accept Papal Supremacy. Orthodoxy will ever be a Confederated Hierarchy Of Bishops. Rome must return to this; God does not want an absolute monarchy on earth, HE is our only absolute Monarch. Confederation was His plan in the Book of Judges, and we believe was his plan for the Church. ALL Patriarchs have the “Keys to the Kingdom”; The Rock has many peaks. Anyway, I can also confirm that only Requiem Mass/Liturgy will ever be recognized as the appropriate method for helping the dead. We will never accept the Indulgence System. It has been proven too corruptible and prone to selfish motivation even without tithe abuse. To get where I’m particularly coming from, check this out: www.staugustinedenver.com westernorthodox.com/reference-library/western-rite-parish-directory/ And see my recent videos as well. I will update them as often as I can. My focus is on Western Rite masses, but I will include any sort of Orthodox sermons, as I travel and Greeks outnumber us 10-1, so manage.

@Fisticuffs Guilde During Fatima, when Mother Mary appeared to the three children, I believe it was St. Lucia who had asked Mary about two friends of hers who had recently died. Mother Mary, one she told to Lucia was in Heaven and the other was in Purgatory and would remain there until the end of of the world. I am also a Catholic convert. Still miss RCIA at times. Purgatory is mentioned in the Bible, just not by name. Jesus spoke alot in parables and not everything should be taken literally. You need to try and know what is to be taken literally and what is a metaphor. That's tough, but that's where videos like this help and there are also Catholic books on it. You may even have a Catholic bookstore near where you live. Ask you Priest or Deacon.

Fisticuffs Guilde; Purgatory is Biblical, it may not be explicitly spelled out in Scripture, but nonetheless it is implicitly taught in Scripture. The word Purgatory like Trinity or the Incarnation may not be in Scripture but the concepts are. We also know that even the jews before Christ’s believed in praying the dead. Trinity is one of the foundational teachings of christianity even though the word doesn’t appear in Scripture, but God revealed both the Trinity and Purgatory to us. There actually are several areas in Scripture where the Doctrine of Purgatory can be found in 1st Corinthians 3 says; “ON THE DAY A MAN DIES HE WILL BE JUDGED, AND FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVED IN JESUS THEIR WORKS WILL BE TESTED BY FIRE” and Verse 15 says; “IF ANY MAN’S WORK IS BURNED UP, HE WILL SUFFER LOSS, THOUGH HIMSELF WILL BE SAVED.” So there must be some other ‘place’ that is neither heaven nor hell and catholics call that Purgatory is God’s “refining fire.” Purgatory is rooted in Christ’s promise we must be perfect. According to Scripture, man must attain the highest perfection to enter into heaven and if that perfection is not attained by the time of death, then he/she must be purified to reach that perfection entering in heaven. The need for purgation thus from the promises of God we shall one day perfect “YOU MUST BE PERFECT AS THE HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT.” (Mtt. 5: 48, Rev. 3:2.). (2 Cor. 7: 1; James 1: 4) St. Paul says; “MAY GOD WHO HAS BEGUN IN US. BY GOD’S GRACE, IT WILL BE BROUGHT TO COMPLETION” and that means the purification process continues even after death. Heaven is also described in the Bible as a place of those who have been made perfect (Hebrew 12: 23; Rev. 21: 27).

@Fisticuffs Guilde Here are many of the scriptures which are referring to Purgatory in the Bible. Purgatory Isaiah 6:1-7: In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" Then flew one of the seraphim (*seraphim means "burning one") to me, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth, and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin forgiven." 2 Maccabees 12:43-45: "He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.". Matthew 5:25-26: [25] Be at agreement with thy adversary betimes, whilst thou art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. [26] Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing. Matthew 12:31-32: [31] Therefore I say to you: Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven. [32] And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come. (NOTES** - [31] "The blasphemy of the Spirit": The sin here spoken of is that blasphemy, by which the Pharisees attributed the miracles of Christ, wrought by the Spirit of God, to Beelzebub the prince of devils. Now this kind of sin is usually accompanied with so much obstinacy, and such wilful opposing the Spirit of God, and the known truth, that men who are guilty of it, are seldom or never converted: and therefore are never forgiven, because they will not repent. Otherwise there is no sin, which God cannot or will not forgive to such as sincerely repent, and have recourse to the keys of the church. [32] "Nor in the world to come": From these words St. Augustine (De Civ. Dei, lib. 21, c. 13) and St. Gregory (Dialog., 4, c. 39) gather, that some sins may be remitted in the world to come; and, consequently, that there is a purgatory or a middle place.) Matthew 18:32-35: [32] Then his lord called him; and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me: [33] Shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant, even as I had compassion on thee? [34] And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt. [35] So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not everyone his brother from your hearts. Mark 9:48: [48] For every one shall be salted with fire: and every victim shall be salted with salt. Hebrews 12:22-24: “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to a judge who is God of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks more graciously than the blood of Abel. " Revelation 21:27: But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15: [12] Now if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble: [13] Every man's work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. [14] If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. [15] If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire. Hebrews 12:29: "For our God is a consuming fire." 1 Peter 1:7: [7] That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 1 Peter 3:19: [19] In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison: (NOTE** - [19] "Spirits that were in prison": See here a proof of a third place, or middle state of souls: for these spirits in prison, to whom Christ went to preach, after his death, were not in heaven; nor yet in the hell of the damned: because heaven is no prison: and Christ did not go to preach to the damned.)

God gave us a tripod to remain faithful to Him. Scriptures, Tradition and Magisterium. Scriptures alone doesn't stand on itself, for many reasons: 1 - It's not in the Bible; 2 - The Bible reinforces oral tradition and Church's authority; 3 - Historically not plausible, as Paul preached Jesus without a single Gospel written. Or should jews ask him: where is that in the Scriptures? 4 - The free exam of Scriptures only led to more confusion. 5 - Sola Scriptura has been weaponized against the Catholic Church, as many, if not all denominations have other source of doctrine like the writings of Ellen White, the book of Concord, the book of Mormon, Westminster catechism, etc.

You make an interesting case. In my Protestant years, I had read this passage as your “cases 3 and 4” (many blows versus few blows) as being a mere amplification of cases 1 and 2 (the faithful versus foolish stewards). But I can see how the case can be made for cases 3 and 4 being ADDITIONAL situations. Also, the wording here - “steward” and “servant” - CLEARLY indicates people who have an existing relationship with Jesus, not just anyone from off the streets. So there can be no doubt that Jesus is talking about his followers - CHRISTIANS - here. Additionally, we have 1 Peter 4:17-18 to reinforce this concept: “For it is time for judgment to begin with the God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, if it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the sinner?” Clearly, right here in the Bible, we have this: Christians are going to be judged, too! And it is hard even for them to be saved - OR, at least hard for them to go straight in to Glory without any punishment/purification whatsoever. The passage talking about our works being “tested by fire” definitely applies here, especially regarding those who “will still be saved, but only as those escaping through the flames.” 1 Corinthians 3:13-15. When I was a Protestant, these passages perplexed me, and I struggled with the meaning of them. Now Catholic and well catechized, it all comes together to make sense. PERFECT sense (I LOVE how the Church does that!)

@@AVB2 How do you read the parable as, then? And by the way, I totally agree with you. Jesus the Messiah forgives/purges our sins. But He also tells us we must repent of our sins to be forgiven of them (“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9, note John says we must confess our sins) and also ("Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." Acts 3:19). And many other verses support this. So if someone is saved in Faith by the Lord Jesus Christ, yet they have sins they have not repented for, then they will be "beaten" for these sins because they were not ready for judgement, but of course still saved and given Eternal Life by Christ. Or you could also say they will be tested by fire and escape out of flames like as described in 1st Corinthians 3. Essentially, on the Last Day, the Lord of Hosts will send the majority of people to outer darkness and eternal destruction, but among the saved there will then be those who were ready for His coming and will be given glory and Eternal Life in the Kingdom of God, and those who were not ready and will be given a beating but then the Lord will give them Eternal Life as well. And then there will be those who never receive the Message of God, and they will also be given a beating but then God will allow them Eternal Life in His Kingdom.

I'd like to think we saw a living parable of Purgatory actually unfold in the OT. The Jews walking through the desert are not allowed to enter the promise land (heaven) until the sinful generation that came from egypt died out (is purged). Some of them were taken into hell in the process (Numbers 26:10). Only 2 of out of the first generation out of Egypt (Joshua and Caleb) made it to the promise land and the rest were never allowed in. So we see the 2 (Joshua and Caleb) that make it and they see the promise land, those that are not allowed (the first out of egypt) in but still are saved through the covenant and then those who are cast into hell for their rebellion against the established order of God. It could be a stretch on my part, but the Bible is so much more profound than people realize. To take the Bible at face value is absurd! It's so rich in deep meaning that skimming only the surface would be ridiculous.

He wants us to come as we are, striving to do our best. Some are saints sooner than others, this is where Purgatory comes in, to purify us either by excepting hardships thrown at us, and love for our God and our fellow man here on earth ,or if we neglected these things later on in a state of purgatory.

@@Mar-wt3di In that respect it makes no difference if we know or do not know the exact day of our expiration. We all know that our time is short in this world, be it even 100 years. There are thousands upon thousands of people expiring every day because of sickness or old age. In general, no body is acting up knowing that there only few years or even few weeks left to live, though there might be some extreme cases in that regard. Lord Jesus did not tell when He is coming back to take His bride, the church with Him to the Fathers house before the end times, because even He did not know the day Himself but only the Father knows it. It has nothing to do with the so called ‘purgatory’, man’s invention. This is my riposte to the lecture in the video, and I am pasting it here for you to reed: There is no ‘purgatory’; death and upon resurrection judgment. Purgatory was invented by the Talmudic Jews and then adopted by the Roman Catholic Church at the Council of Florence in 1438-1445. My question is: what happened with the souls before the Council of Florence took place? The proverb in Luke that you are discussing only illustrates severity of punishment for certain types of behavior and of course reward for obedience. Let’s delve into the subject of sin: the three types of misconduct depicted in Luke are three types of sinful behavior, you cannot dispute that. Sins can only be washed off with the blood of Lord Jesus Christ, He died on cross for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2 (KJV) "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." When you are on the other side, it is already too late to be cleansed. Furthermore, there are no other determinants to quench the guilt for the sins but the blood of Christ. Furthermore, sins can be pardoned only when confessed and asked God for forgiveness in the name of Lord Jesus Christ (not a priest, priests cannot forgive sins). Mark 2:5-7 ...who can forgive sins but God only?” 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Romans @-24 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” Isaiah @ “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” Isaiah @ “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” (only God is the One that can save us from sins, not a priest) Romans @ “23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1Timothy 2:5-6 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” After people die, the souls are waiting to be resurrected. Eccles. 9:5-6 “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.” (the dead are waiting in their graves to be resurrected and judged, the souls sleep) 1 Thess. @-18 “13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleepin Jesus will God bring with him.15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” John @-29 “28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” Sir, with all the respect, yourself, you are playing with the fire, an eternal fire by deceiving people and leading them to everlasting condemnation. Galatians 1:8-9 (KJV) “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Once again, the gospel is: Lord Jesus Christ suffered, and died on the cross for the sins of the world, and was resurrected on the third day according to the Scripture. He paid fully for our sins and only by His blood we can be cleansed. And not in a man’s made-up purgatory by some other imaginary means. Man (I am referring to preacher), whoever you are, and whatever your title is, when you will stand in front of the White Throne facing the Almighty Judge, you will have a huge burden upon your shoulders for deceiving thousands, upon thousands ignorant people who rely on your word instead of turning to the word of God, and seeking the truth in the Bible. 2Tim. @“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2Peter @ “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Hosea 4:6“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” There is no excuse for ignorance, the Bible is accessible for all. Amen.

@@mirr1427 I know nobody is acting up , that was just an example of what might happen if we knew the date of our death. You seem to dodge the very words of Jesus in the many parables he told to teach us what the kingdom of Heaven is like. And you are right about being washed by the blood of Jesus saving us from hell The foundation in the following is an example. 1Cor 3.10-15 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid the foundation , and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with CARE how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid, that foundation is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation, with gold silver precious stones wood hay straw, the WORK of each builder will become visible, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with FIRE, and the fire will test what sort of WORK each has done. IF what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward, IF the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss, the builder will be SAVED, but only through fire. Now don't you think that all the loss and suffering will be gone and settled before entering into Heaven ? Remember there is no suffering in Heaven right ?

The third servant thats talked about in the video is the one they combine with the second. So my family claimed that the one who went to the unfaithful just received a severe beating. @Michel Martinez You are correct there is no passage that indicates bible alone . 2 Tim 3:15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. This of course relates to the old testament which is what Peter had to work with when he got up to preach at Pentecost. Jesus founded a church ,not a book is also correct . Jesus wrote the scriptures and 2 Timothy points out what those scriptures are for. The church has not remained faithful to the scriptures over time and has brought in doctrines that are false and misleading to the common person. The church encompasses the Catholic church and the protestant church as a group as you will not find anywhere in all of scripture any name attached to the believers to say they are better or more spiritual than the other. So Jesus founded the church with teaching authority ,and can you point out what church that is ? You are taught that it is the Catholic church and protestants are taught it is the protestant church, so just where does one find the truth ? Maybe that good ole guy named Paul telling Timothy what the scriptures are for, could be an indication of what the church should be believing and teaching ,without adding to it.

Read the context of 1 Cor 6: and then notice that the justification, sanctification and washing, in verse 11, is all past tense, as in already done , so we know from Revelation that no unclean thing will enter heaven and Jesus has done absolutely everything to make you clean already before you die . Purgatory denies the full payment for ALL sins that Jesus accomplished on the cross. There is absolutely nothing you can do to merit God's acceptance on your own . If you can by all means point out the scripture that says anything close to it.

There’s also a Museum of the Holy Souls of Purgatory in Rome with artifacts scorched by the Holy Souls. The display consists of one large glass-enclosed case in a small room adjoining the sacristy of the Parish of the Sacred Heart in Prati, Italy. Jesus sent Fostina to visit Purgatory with her guardian angel. She heard the Lord say, My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it." The Holy Souls are suffering and it is our job as the Church Militant to relieve it. We gain their release by offering prayers for them throughout the day. Jesus. Jesus meek and humble of heart make my heart like unto Yours. My Lord and my God. This is just a few of the prayers we can offer for their release. St. Faustina writes in her diary about visiting purgatory. [The next night] I saw my Guardian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. In a moment I was in a misty place full of fire in which there was a great crowd of suffering souls. They were praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid. The flames which were burning them did not touch me at all. My Guardian Angel did not leave me for an instant. I asked these souls what their greatest suffering was. They answered me in one voice that their greatest torment was longing for God. I saw Our Lady visiting the souls in PURGATORY. The souls call her “The Star of the Sea.” She brings them refreshment. I wanted to talk with them some more, but my Guardian Angel beckoned me to leave. We went out of that prison of suffering. [I heard an interior voice] which said, My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it. Since that time, I am in closer communion with the suffering souls. (Diary, 20) She called it a prison of suffering. Jesus speaks about prison. You won’t get out until you have paid the last penny. You don’t get out of hell.

I wish this was the whole video instead of a clip. I think you’re right Jesus is talking about purgatory here. Being Catholic Christians we grow up understanding that purgatory exists. The classic go to Bible verse is 1 Corr 3:15, “he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.” but read the Chapter for context. Most of us have some attachment to sin so our souls must be cleansed, temporal punishment, Lk 12:59, 1 Pet 1:7, Mt 5:25-26 before we can enter into heaven. Rev 21:27. It’s like I can be forgiven for speeding but I have to do the time or pay the fine. I always wondered about all of Luke 12 not just the verses you talk about here because of the last sentence Jesus says, verse 59 “I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper” which seems to fit the concept of purgatory well. Great video Dr. Petrie.

CONFLICT BETWEEN TWO AUTHORITIES: THE POPE'S AND THE BIBLE'S This is the main cause of differences in beliefs & practices between the Catholics and the Reformed Churches (Protestants). The SCRIPTURES are the writings of God's prophets and of the writings of Christ's Apostles and Disciples. The BIBLE is the collection of scriptures, the WORDS OF GOD. MISINTERPRETATION of the scriptures are also a notable cause of divergence in beliefs within the Christian community. "SOLA SCRIPTURA" is a Protestant doctrine, which asserts that the scriptures alone are the sole authority on Christian theology and practice. But where else can we get our correct instructions and guidance on Christian faith other than from the Holy Spirit-inspired writings of Christ's personal witnesses? CHRISTIANITY relies solely on the Apostles' and Disciples' writings for its existence -- otherwise, it's not Christianity. The HRCC is not true Christianity because of its heavy reliance on its nonscriptural doctrines.

Geovanny Fajardo There is no biblical basis for the human-created concept of purgatory. In this video, the speaker attempts to use this biblical text to deduce that there is such a thing as purgatory: Luke 12:35-47 35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table, and will come and wait on them. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” 41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?” 42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men, and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. 47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Dear souls, once more I exhort you to read scripture and consider the full context. Do not be deceived by lack of due diligence. In this particular case, we need to consider the full chapter i.e. Luke 12. In this case, let's consider what Jesus says in Luke 12:1-2: 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed or hidden that will not be made known. Notice that in 12:41 Peter's question was "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?", at the beginning of the text Jesus is addressing the disciples and that is why Peter is asking the question. From verses, 12:1-12 Jesus is addressing the disciples not the crowd. Then in verse 12:13, we read "Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”" at this point Jesus starts addressing the crowd from verses 12:13-21, then he starts addressing the disciples again from verses 12:35-48 and goes back the addressing the crowd 12:49-57. Notice that the question Peter asked is not answered directly by the Lord, but Jesus uses a parable concerning masters, managers, servants, and unbelievers. From this, we can deduce that the master is Jesus, the managers are believers in leadership positions, servants are believers, and unbelievers are lost-souls, therefore this parable is concerning believers, saved by faith in the fact that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God. In verse 12:42 Jesus asks “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?" Jesus answers Peter with a question that contains his answer mainly this is concerning "faithful and wise managers" i.e. believers in leadership positions. The servants who God will give leadership positions are those who are "ready for service and keep their lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return" i.e. servants who keep the faith believing that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God" as stated in verses 12:35-36. Then Jesus refers to a servant that doubts the faithfulness of God by doubting the fact that Jesus in did will return i.e. verse 12:45 "My master is taking a long time in coming". Therefore this is a leader that loses the faith and no longer believes in the second coming of Jesus and therefore denies that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.", this leader starts abusing the believers under his care and using them for his personal gain, this servant is guilty of hypocrisy as stated in verse 12:1. This kind of leader is no longer a believer and therefore was never a believer and "Jesus will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers" as stated in verse 12:46. The next category is verse 12:47, "the servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants" this servant will experience the consequence of their lack of commitment to Christ even if deep inside they know that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.", they will not enjoy the fruits of the Holy Spirit "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness" and will find themselves suffering in the middle of the storm without comfort even though they are saved by grace. Then is the believer in verse 12:48 "the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment", this is the believer that neglects to put everything in prayer and supplication, who is unable to count his or her blessings and therefore is anxious unable to depend on God, contrary to what Jesus says in verse 12:22 "Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear." Then Jesus finishes with a very strong warning for all of those who desire leadership positions, verse 12:47 "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.". As you can see the most severe of consequences is for those who desire to serve God in a leadership position. If you desire to serve God in a leadership position make sure your faith is strong and you are willing to sacrifice everything for Christ. There is absolutely no support for purgatory in the scripture cited by this video. I beg of you don't be deceived, seek the truth in scripture, meditate in the word of God, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you. God bless you all.

@@generalnwankwo8689 Read the scriptures in context with every verse given to you as proof of purgatory and you will see for yourself that purgatory denies the finished work of Christ on the cross, who died for all of our sins and when we do sin Jesus is there for us, keeping His righteousness as a shield over us. 1 John 2:1,2 Everything we do as believers is through faith , and any works we do in faith does not get us any closer to God . roman Catholic church has the CCC CCC 1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire: reference given 1 Cor 3:15 Context starts in verse 11 ! read what it says about purgatory and look at the verse presented , Now read the context and you see that sin is not in question at all , repentance of sin is not in question at all, purification from sin is not in question at all, stain of sin is not in question at all. No one is punished , no one is tortured , no one is barred from heaven, no one suffers pain they do suffer loss of what they could have had . No one is burnt so what is burnt? 1031 goes hand in hand with 1032 prayers for the dead and the quote from Maccabee's 12: is again ripped from context . As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come. Well does Matthew 12:31,32 actually say that sin will be forgiven in the age to come? 31:And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32:Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Do you see the emphasis on the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and not on forgiveness of sins? but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. That means no forgiveness now or ever and it is not talking about sins , it is talking about blasphemy of the Holy Spirit! So READ the CONTEXT and prove to yourself that what you believe is correct. has the holy spirit revealed all this to you ? Paul tells Timothy that EVERYTHING he needs to be THOROUGHLY equipped is found in the scriptures. As there is no contradiction between the old testament and the new testament we can look to God's word with confidence for what God wants us to know. The Holy Spirit reveals God's word to us as we read it. However we need to read it in context not in cherry picking season.

@Sean Rath From my copy of *The Didache Bible* on the Particular Judgment (p.628B): "AN APOLOGETIC EXPLANATION OF THE PARTICULAR JUDGMENT _What is the Particular Judgment_ ? *We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God* . *And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit* . *The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned* . *The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one* . ( *1 Cor 2: 12-15* ) [ *Christ* ] *has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself*. *And just as it it appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him* . ( *Heb 9: 26-28* ) Everyone who has died or will die before the Second Coming of Christ is judged immediately at the time of his or her death. This is the Particular Judgment. The New Testament speaks of the judgment mainly from the perspective of a final meeting with Christ when he comes again. But we also find in many places of the Sacred Scripture references to the retribution immediately after each person's deaths a consequence of his or her faith and deeds. We know with the certainty of faith that each person, at death, receives - in his or her immortal soul - an eternal retribution in a _Particular Judgment_ . He or she immediately refers his or her life to Christ, going to one of three states: through a period of purification directly to his definitive state in Heaven, or to eternal condemnation (Cf. CCC 1051) The Particular Judgment is an act by which God makes the soul understand clearly the state it is in. This illumination will lead directly either to the soul's union with God or its rejection of Him. The _General Judgment_ at the end of the world does not alter the results of the Particular Judgment in any way. The Sacrament of Penance, in which we ask forgiveness for our sins, in effect anticipates our Particular Judgment and aids us to avoid the eternal consequences of our transgressions. (Cf. CCC 1022, 1470) The *Catechism* addresses this question in paragraph 1021."

Think of purgatory this way: A mischievous kid throws a rock at a car window belonging to his neighbor. The neighbor goes into rage mode demanding monetary payment for the damage incurred. The kid's parents pay the damage to avoid further trouble and resolve the matter (This is a picture of eternal debt being paid. Obviously the kid is incapable of paying for the damage done to his neighbor's car) However, the kid is brought home and is caned by his parents for his misbehavior. This is a picture of the temporal consequences that is paid off. The kid is not kicked out and disowned as he is still their child, so similarly us believers are still saved (Heaven-bound) - sons and daughters of God. Yet the kid is caned temporarily... why? Because he is to be purged from his wrongdoing, to become better, and to be restored to right relationship with his parents and neighbour.

Yes Jesus died once and for all to take away the sins of the world, and to rebuild the bridge reconnecting Man and God. Nothing more, nothing less. That we do not deny or debate against. The blood of Christ covers our original sin - saving grace conferred onto us via baptism in water and spirit (as well as confirmation - sealing with the Holy Spirit). But because we still have original sin, we still have sinful inclinations. As long as we're in this world, we'll be exposed to temptations and near occasions of sin. Hence, we all fall down, struggle and make mistakes. Let's be honest, can we confidently say that at the moment of our deaths we are 100% unblemished? Several of us indeed yes, but not every disciple (one who is in a state of grace and friendship with Christ) Salvation is ongoing - I was saved yesterday, currently being saved and express a confident hope of being saved in the future. We teach an ongoing sanctification and inner renewal of the righteousness conferred by Christ to us. Purgatory simply serves to assist some of us with achieving that objective. It's gonna hurt but no pressure, no diamonds. Just my 2 cents worth.

I like his interpretation of this portion of the bible. Yet he himself said Purgatory is something that was later developed in Church doctrine. Nothing in the bible speaks of purgatory. When Christ dies and said it is finished.....He dies for all sin. That the sin of this world was paid. @@nathanielfabular9981 There is no biblical basis for the human-created concept of purgatory. God bless you all.

all this explanation did for me was redefine purgatory. It's one thing to be judged for our actions and it's another to say that in doing so we become purified to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Nowhere in that parable does it say the beatings purified the servants. The only way a believer is purified is by the sacrifice of Jesus. We enter into the kingdom because we are clothed in his righteousness. Not because we are beaten into purification. I'm seriously studying purgatory but it still always seems to undermine the gospel. I find it too hard to accept.

Thewordoftruth, I share only to encourage you to seek to view Scripture through a both/and lens. All Scripture is true. The promise passages as well as the warning passages. I just dont want you to be deceived into thinking the promise verse have no warning verses to go with them. God bless. Romans 11:21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.

Felipe Van Leeuwen I am not Roman Catholic because Rome denies the gospel. Rome has a gospel but not the gospel and, in reality, their gospel damns not saves because it explicitly denies that justification comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Rome accurately understands the Protestant position and unapologetically anathematizes it. To the work of Christ it adds the work of Mary. To the intercession of the Savior it adds the intercession of the saints. To the authority of the Bible it adds the authority of tradition. To the free gift of salvation it adds the necessity of human effort. In place of the finished work of Christ on the cross it demands the ongoing sacrifice of the mass. In place of the permanent imputation of Christ’s righteousness it substitutes the temporary infusion of works righteousness. In so many different ways it explicitly and unapologetically denies truth and promotes error. The Roman Catholic gospel is a false gospel. I am not Roman Catholic because Rome is not the church. Rome claims to trace her lineage in an unbroken line that extends all the way back to the apostle Peter to whom Christ said, “Upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). In this way she says that she is the church with the power and authority to demand the allegiance and bind the conscience of every Christian. I do not recognize such lineage and, therefore, do not recognize such authority. Her claims are unprovable and represent a distortion of the Bible’s claims about Christ’s church. To be Catholic I would first have to bend the knee to the pope as the successor to Peter and acknowledge the Church as the continuation of what Christ began through his disciples. I cannot, because the Roman Catholic Church is a false church. I am not Roman Catholic because Catholic worship is idolatrous. Protestants commonly charge Catholicism with promoting worship of Mary or the saints. Under the tutelage of R.C. Sproul I came to understand that this charge requires nuance and is, to some degree, a matter of defining words such as “venerate.” And yet there is undeniably a seed of what I must acknowledge as idolatry. This was affirmed during a recent trip to Europe where in Germany and Austria I visited Catholic cathedrals and saw the veneration of bones, relics, and icons, and where I saw the Church advocating and promoting prayers to Mary and the saints. Here was Catholicism in its full bloom and it was as alarming as it was tragic. I saw people who have not known the joyous freedom of the gospel desperately extending worship to or through Mary and the saints. They did it all under the guidance of their Church. In many of its forms Roman Catholic worship is idolatrous. I joyfully affirm, of course, that there are true believers within Catholicism and that what is true of Rome’s official doctrine is not necessarily true of all of her adherents. Yet the salvation of these brothers and sisters has come despite the teachings of the church, not through them. I appreciate the point Leonardo De Chirico highlights here: What refers to the Catholic Church in its doctrinal and institutional configuration cannot necessarily be extended to all Catholics as individuals. The grace of God is at work in men and women who, though considering themselves Catholics, entrust themselves exclusively to the Lord, cultivate a personal relationship with Him, read the Bible and live as Christians. These people, however, must be encouraged to reflect on whether their faith is compatible or not with belonging to the Catholic Church. Moreover, they must be helped to critically think over what remains of their Catholic background in the light of Biblical teaching. I am not Roman Catholic. I am not Roman Catholic because I was raised to understand that Catholic doctrine is opposed to Scripture. But even more, I am not Roman Catholic because through my own examinations I came to see that she denies the gospel of free grace, that she claims authority that is not her own, and that she promotes worship that detracts from the worship we all owe exclusively to our God.

@@Wgaither1 I think the length of your answer shows how much effort you need to do just to justify your stand and make it "right." Perhaps you trust "your own" examinations more than you trust the Gospel and those whom Jesus has chosen to shepherd His people until he comes back again. I totally respect your opinion, but I disagree with the things you said about how we deny the Gospel etc. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, Son of the Father, and the Spirit was sent to keep the Church from going astray. Doesn't matter if you like it or not, doesn't matter what you think, that faith of mine on the Truth does not change. May you grow in God's Spirit wherever you are right now, and you'll never be astray. God bless you in Jesus Name. :)

Keys were also mentioned in other verses to paint a clear picture. Like the keys of the bottomless pit . Isiah and Matthew mentioning of keys are independent of each other. So it can’t be used to build a case for this purgatory in this case.

I haven’t read much regarding the concept of another plane that we’d call Purgatory according to the descriptions within the Scripture, but I would say two things as a non-Catholic Christian myself- 1. Purgatory can be misunderstood by Christians as being necessary for all believers, which by this explanation within this video is clearly not the case, but many use this point to claim it violates the ultimate sacrificial element of Christ. 2. Non-Catholics may prefer to disregard purgatory because it can be used as a base justification for continuing in sin since purgatory is not a permanent residence, and merely a transitory one which a person could justify themselves as still passing through and entering the kingdom of heaven, if this makes sense. It parallels the reasons why some don’t believe in rapture, because they believe it unfairly excludes them from the kind of suffering that Jesus Christ had undergone on the cross for our very own sins. The fear again being- if there is no rapture, then will those who believed in rapture lose their faith at this moment? It plays off the element of doubt that plagues both positions. That being that doubt of the event taking place is justification enough to assume it would be better to presume it does not exist at all and it would be better to adopt the worse possible case scenario. Which in that case would simply force believers to adhere even more closely to faith and refrain from sin even more so.
