The Truth About Ramadan

Ramadan is typically described as a month-long fast. Yet the entire month is filled with feasting. Indeed, binge eating during Ramadan is causing a health crisis in Muslim countries. So why is gluttony and excess portrayed as strict discipline and self control in Islam? Is there a spiritual component to Ramadan? David Wood explores the issue, and uncovers the disturbing truth about Islam's holiest month.

I learned about Ramadan through hosting Saudi students. Sure they ate nothing during the day but asked me to keep all the meals they would normally eat. On top of that they raided the fridge and pantry every night, played loud music while feasting and it was so disruptive. I could not believe that this was a FAST. I called it a FARCE. After three years of this nonsense I declined students from the Middle East because they always came on Ramadan.

As an ex-convert, I have to say your description of Ramadan, as it's currently carried out by Muslims, is totally accurate. Originally, you're not supposed to be feasting during the night. I was taught that prophet Muhammad didn't do that. I was taught you're supposed to eat less as a whole, not just simply fast during the day. Nevertheless, I got caught up in the feasting just as much as everybody else. What a joke.

I was in Riyadh during Ramadan back in ‘84. Muslims from everywhere came to walk around a circle for their religious reasons. As they were going to their big circle, there were many women dressed in black from head to toe sitting on hot sidewalks with only their hand sticking out begging for change. Most Muslims walking by to their religious circle ignored these women. That was my introduction to the Muslim religion.

I’ve lived in Arabia and I’ve seen many hypocritical practices about fasting. Just like what you said they eat tons of food at night so they have enough calories reserved for the daytime. And then they have to excuse themselves from doing hardworks since they’re fasting (it became a very good excuse not to do any shit). They work half day and sleep during the other half, at night they feast (eat as much food as they can) before around 4 am. Then the cycle repeats until Eid.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised against overeating, especially during Ramadan. He said: "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air." - Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book 25, Hadith 2380. This hadith underscores the importance of moderation even during the blessed month of Ramadan, urging restraint and mindfulness in eating habits.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised moderation in eating. One relevant hadith is: "A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines (eats much)." - Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65, Hadith 2990. This emphasizes the virtue of moderation in consumption, urging believers to eat in moderation and avoid overindulgence.

Or anything else really. Asking for tolerance of unproductive coworkers for an entire month is so wrong on so many levels. Financially damaging to the company, health hazards for clients, workload compiling left undone, deadlines not met, service performance dropping, etc etc. Because every single job on planet requires undivided attention and fast reacting. I hope you guys wished your Muslim colleagues Happy Ramadan but that you're not "expecting them to work less", at least not for the same salary. Someone should anonymously reply to that mail asking for "the colleagues who are working less this month to have adequate proportional salary reduction, and that you guys who take a chunk of their workload get the appropriate salary increase. It is only fair, right, boss?" End the letter with a nice "Ramadan Mubarak".

I am currently fasting as part of my spiritual practice, for its health benefits, and to lose some of my fatty tissue. I fast two days a week every week. I don't abstain from taking in fluids, for obvious health reasons and because staying hydrated is crucial for my well-being. I have found that abstaining from food for even a single day provides a spiritually enriching experience. It changes my brain chemistry because the body replaces glucose with ketone bodies, altering hormones in a way that allows for a better connection with God. I even look forward to my fasting days, and although it’s hard to resist eating, it gets easier the longer you do it and the longer you haven’t eaten. My longest water fast (meaning I only consumed fluids) was two full weeks, or 14 days, without any breaks and without eating when the sun goes down-24 hours a day, every day. Currently, I fast for around 32 hours until I resume eating the next day. So, a full day and the night when I sleep. It might even be longer because I don't stop eating at midnight, and I don't start eating immediately after waking up. There is substantial research supporting the health benefits of fasting, such as improved metabolic health, enhanced brain function, and reduced inflammation. When done properly, fasting can be a safe and effective practice for both spiritual and physical well-being.

I've started fasting since I was 5 years old, because I wanted to be like an adult. My mother did not allow me to sleep the day and stay awake in the morning. She always pointed out what is the point of fasting if I slept all day. And on the 15th day of Ramadan, she realized that my body looks exhausted from fasting, especially because I was fasting in a Desert (I am an Arab that immigrated to Saudi) so she forced me to fast half day, I refused, so she told me to fast one day and break it the next day, and when I would become 6, I would be allowed to fast the whole of Ramadan My siblings started by half fast and gradually increasing the duration. We would read the Quran in the day. At least finish 20 pages everyday. We would watch cartoons about the prophets (PBUT) or read books about them (PBUT). Or about the history of İslam and its values So if you had bad experience, do not generalise. I did not generalise on chrisitians when one of them did a bad thing. I'm Jewish by birth. There are 6 fasting days in the Jewish calendar (I had to google), the most famous is Yom Kipur. Most people struggle to fast for 24 hours from sunset to sunset (which is why sick people are exempt), so I've always struggled to comprehend how Muslims do it for a MONTH without dropping off the twig. Thank you David for explaining this so eloquently :)

This video is so funny, had me laughing throughout. I'm an ex-Muslim who "fasted" on Ramadan for many years of my life. Until this moment it never occured to me what a joke the whole idea even was. Technically we were skipping one meal in the day while slightly changing the time of the other two meals and making up for the calorie deficit of the skipped meal during the other two meals. Come to think of it I've been fasting more as an ex-Muslim than I was as a Muslim since I regularly skip a meal in my day to prevent weight gain.
@danthesolarman6480

Weird place to write it but skipping meals doesn't lose weight in fact it leaves you with less energy plus it can lead to eating disorders. I suggest you focus more on what you are eating vs how much 💪
@meehanparast

@@danthesolarman6480 I eat a normal breakfast and lunch then skip dinner entirely (or sometimes I eat a light salad for dinner). You lose and gain weight based on how many calories you consume vs. how many you burn throughout the day. @@Catherinetatethefkingliberty Depends on whether Islamic law is the official law of the land or not. In my country (Iran) Islamic law (Called "Sharia") is the official law of the land so if I were to openly and publicly declare that I have left Islam or no longer want to practice it I must technically be killed according to the backwards and barbaric Islamic law. I know for a fact that there are many hardcore Muslims in my country who would want to kill someone like me if they knew who I was, however due to the massive increase in the number of ex-Muslims in Iran (And increasingly across the Islamic world) in recent years, even Islamic governments like Iran no longer implement this law fully and only practice it in the most extreme cases (Like someone leaving Islam then openly and publicly attacking and insulting Islam in some organized way)

I fast for 3 days every 30 days, all I consume for those 3 days is water. This is not for religious purposes but for my health as it helps to reset my auto-immune system and calm down my allergies/intolerances. It is pretty easy for me to do now, in fact the hardest thing is starting to eat normally after the 3rd day as I have to build up slowly and don't get back to my normal consumption until about day 6. I certainly couldn't gorge for 30 days although I wouldn't find it hard to go without food between sunrise and sunset as I generally don't eat lunch anyhow. Going without water would be much harder. I am aware of the morning and evening feasts as my neighbours are a Muslim family from Afghanistan and during Ramadan they eat in the garden and are still outside eating until the early hours and at weekends they are out all night. One of my friends lives in what has become a mainly Muslim area and even young children are still playing out in the street until 3 or 4am during Ramadan.

First any one can to fasting Ramadan not about stop eat food and drink Fasting is obligatory for every sane adult Muslim who is able to fast.When should the intention be made to fast Ramadan? A: He must intend before the onset of dawn, and if he does not intend until the onset of dawn, then his fast is invalid. This is evidenced by what came with Malik and al-Nasa’i from the hadith of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them, that he said: “No one fasts except those who combine to fast before dawn,” unlike the intention to fast. Volunteering, so it is valid during the day, when Muslim narrated in his Sahih that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, entered upon Aisha, may God be pleased with her, and asked her if she had anything? She said: No, and he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Then I am fasting.” Is one intention sufficient for Ramadan at the beginning of it, or is it necessary to set it every night? A: The correct intention is that his intention at the beginning of the month is sufficient, so he does not need to specify the intention for each night, unless there is a reason that permits breaking the fast, so he breaks his fast during the month, then a new intention is necessary to resume fasting. Is it permissible to rely on the call to prayer broadcasted by some radio stations to enter Fajr and Maghrib? A: It is permissible if this broadcast is reliable, and Sheikh Muhammad bin Uthaymeen, may God have mercy on him, issued a fatwa on this. Q 7: What proves the beginning of the month of Ramadan? A: The beginning of the month of Ramadan is proven by two things: The first: Completing the number of Sha'ban thirty days. Second: sighting the crescent of the month of Ramadan. What is the ruling on someone who saw the crescent of Ramadan or Eid alone and whose testimony was not accepted? A: He does not fast or break his fast except with people, when it came in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi and others that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Fasting is on the day you fast.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albani, may God have mercy on him, and because the month is taken from fame, and if it was not well-known among people, it would not have entered at that time. As harsh and sarcastic as this video is, I must agree that it feels accurate. I don't consider myself to be part of any specific religion, but I was always quite interested in fasting and made great experiences, when I did it alone. I mainly did water fasting, taking my last meal on Saturday evening, only drinking water during sunday and eat a LIGHT meal again on Monday morning. I felt fantastic with it and similarly with intermittent fasting as well. Only eating once per day, for a longer period of time, mostly when the sun is still up, felt great. But... Then I was on vacation in a Muslim majority country and during ramadhan i was quite excited, because I heard about how "hard" it is to participate and as someone with some experiences in fasting, I thought this may be an amazing challenge. But what I experienced was just... bad. I don't even have a different word for it. Only eating when the sun is down significantly slowed down my metabolism. Pair that with the ridiculous amounts of food people were asking me to eat and I had digestive problems pretty much every 2-3 days. I was going back and forth between diarrhea and congestion. My body was sending me ALL the signals, that this is not a sustainable way to eat, so my body literally forced me to stop doing that. I couldn't keep it up, because it felt like if i continue, I will get serious health problems. So, I adjusted the fasting a bit. I ate a relatively big meal in the evening, after the sun went down, went to sleep like usual, got up around 3am to only drink a glass of water and then wait until evening again for the bigger meal. Only then I felt like it was benefiting me. Once i did that, I felt good. Sadly this experience completely shattered my expectation of what ramadhan is about. Especially all this crying out online, that it is "so hard to fast". If you do it in an unsustainable way, then of course it is hard. But for all the wrong reasons. What is even more sad is that prior to ramadhan a Muslim explained to me, that part of the reason they fast is so that they stay humble. Not indulging into your desire to eat makes you feel compassionate for those you have little to eat, because of poverty. I liked that perspective a lot, but after taking part in ramadhan myself, I can't help myself but think of this as hypocrisy.
