How safe are solar PV battery storage systems? Can they be put in the loft?
Lets explore the facts, data and options!
Take a look at an article I have published on our blog! powersonic.co/news/f/how-safe...
Please check manufacturer specific data around battery safety and locations.
It is a really difficult one as many of the reports are from at the latest 2020 which is very out of date in the battery development and safety world.
I am open to learn on this and not tied to my views long term! I could perhaps be happy to install systems into loft spaces one day, who knows!
On to more positive aspects of solar PV systems again soon! But this needed exploring.

Very good informative video

Agree with much of what you say. Lithium Iron Phosphate is deemed much safer than the 'horror stories' we hear about Lithium Ion in the context of EVs ~ such as the Dutch fire service having 'dousing baths' to dump EVs in to ensure they are extinguished.... Personally with any type of house, my preference would be to build a small brick enclosure 'down the garden' for the danger-kit, and cable to the house. I see this as akin to the properties which had LPG tanks away from the house where properties weren't on the gas grid.

Looks like you have done a good job of that install Mark. I found this video informative and educational. This is the first time I have seen an auto fire exstiguisher. Keep up the good work.

Very fair points you raise and it is right to raise them and consider the options carefully. They are now starting to come out with fire extinguishers which are specifically designed for lithium battery fires - Although sadly the automatic extinguishers seem to be typically aimed at commercial kitchens with dry powder. Hopefully they will start creating automatic extinguishers designed specifically for lithium fires. I think installing a fire alarm above every battery installation is a good option and is quite cheap, bonus points if it's interlinked of course. I would be curious to see how you do an outdoor installation and what considerations you have around those, if you do one and could record a video on it.

We have an outdoor one coming soon! The fire suppression is really useful in preventing a fire from reaching the battery which is far more likely to occur that the other way around. So I think it makes a lot of sense. Thanks Andrew.

Great video I have always said that the loft is not a good place for inverters and batteries it could be up there burning up for a while before you even notice

The risks with Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries on their own should be extremely low since the chemistry is very stable, even when they are abused. The biggest risk would be wiring faults on the battery output. Warning that those powder extinguishers will destroy everything in their path since the powder is corrosive. There are some clean agent fire extinguishers available for a small fortune though in case they are accidentally triggered or dropped during installation.

That is exactly correct. They are relatively safe in terms of batteries. Far more likely than a battery beginning a fire is it becoming part of one. Hence offering local extinguishing to at least buy time in the worst circumstances. The coorsive nature at that stage of minimal importance or to be Frank concern. Professional installers will take all factors into consideration and engineer in safe and compliant systems. If you are looking for one check the MCS website for a local installer who can best advise

Also why delete the comments on the SPD discussion? It's okay to be wrong even on a public platform. We all learn together that way 💪

I would always recommend the loft space as a last resort. I have equipment in loft 3 battery's replaced under warranty and all due to excessive heat in summer. I have now added ventilation in loft for summer time only.

It's such a tricky one in a lot of homes. But I totally agree with you Gino.

Hi Mark Very interesting and a common sense approach to the subject . I remember when pressurised heating systems started to come available , and the bomb in the airing cupboard was often used by plumbers to scare people from adopting them 😂 . It is a fact that technology is going at such a pace that it can only benefit the consumer . Out of interest how are you getting on with your air source heating , I must admit I’m still not on board when fitted to older properties . But would value your opinion , as a trusted professional . Best wishes and kind regards 😀👍👍👍

Great vid Mark, quick question. Do you install DC surge protection on all installations or do some inverters come with built in protection? Cheers.

Some do have type 3 spd protection built in but we fit it as standard in the DC strings.
