Just finished my Thru Hike on the A.T. September 10th both you and Taylor really helped me along in my prep work to becoming somewhat of a "dirtbag" hiker and i thank you for that 🤘🏻 also I've always wanted to be on a podcast as a guest so I wanted to throw my name into the hat!

This year in New England was no joke, rain, rain and more rain. I hiked the LT last year and it was beautiful and pretty much no mud. This year it was essentially a mud fest and often the trial was a stream. Good call on avoiding the steam crossing. I was on the LT on July 10 and 11th when it rained a good ten inches or more. I was fortunate to get out but another hiker was not so fortunate. I returned the end of August thinking things would have improved, no chance.

My favorite hiking vlogger is Sintax ... because he brings the viewer adventure and hikes the normal way... like most of us do. Making mistakes, being honest, and basically keeping it real. Most AT thru hiker vlogs are garbage in thought and devoid of creativity, yet I'll be drawn to a couple every season because of a hikers personality. Just to see if they make it.

The lesson is that the best times can’t be replicated. It’s unfortunate but it’s just a fact. I’d suggest always doing something new! Or find a way to make the same experience seem new by adding something special. My two faves together-I enjoyed this one!

As someone who loves hiking and the outdoors, I love watching vloggers. I guess, I could be considered an "armchair hiker", and, yeah, I totally tune into this stuff as my "sports entertainment", BUT would NEVER be negative about people putting themselves out there and pushing their physical limits. It is all admiration, and "man, I wish I could be that awesome." People are so ridiculous, sometimes. Thanks for a great podcast and providing my vlog "fix" to both of you!

Enjoyed this discussion. Kyle you are at your best when you ask fair pointed questions and listen, you allowed Taylor to do some self-reflection which is her forte. Many things can be true at the same time, right? You can both be excellent and dedicated at hiking (thru or attempted). Effective and entertaining communicators, admit mistakes, share self-doubts, and make tough choices for safety or mental health. That you both share. Aside from how people react to you there is something you only touched upon how the pressure of being on Utube changes your mindset while hiking. Additionally, it is easy to categorize people who watch hikers but please feel confident that they are rooting for everyone and does it matter if they are a hiker? Many things can be true about the people both you and Taylor cross paths with. Good or bad hikers or non-hikers, your listeners or admirers, but are not trained in how to deal with seeing a famous hiker and you are not trained to hike while famous. That is what you share with everyone. Just guessing you can both gently guide folks and speak up for yourselves.

Heard on podcast but trying to help support your RU-vid Watched both yours and Taylor past hikes. This summer/fall inNew England was no joke. Appreciate the effort. You both put in in difficult circumstances. Only negative comment is if you put yourself on RU-vid as a thru’s hiker with the goal of reaching as many people as possible and earning a little money, then having a resentment that people see you and photograph themselves with you is a little unrealistic.

I watch a lot of thru hike videos. I will never thru hike myself due to some minor health concerns but would really like to work up the confidence to backpack overnight a day or 2. I learn a lot about hiking in general. However I never think that an individual won’t make it….. that thought is just odd to me 😊. Love this podcast by the way.

I watched her vids each day because I wanted to get an idea of what the AT was like. She did a great job with putting out daily vids, and it gave me a great picture of what it is like on the AT. I enjoyed the tie-ins to the towns, hostels, and hotels. I preferred the vids when she was alone rather than with her partner as she was more reflective and descriptive of the trail when she was by herself. Thx.

If you enjoy having lodging options every night, consider the Camino de Santiago! I have walked it 4 times(one in each season) and have never needed to carry a tent, cookset kr sleeping system(other than a silk bag liner) Superb people, world class food and a truly amazing 500ish miles.

re: judging people If I'm watching a through hike series, that's a lot of time commitment. So I usually look at mental attitude, unique perspectives, gear, shakedown, and past experience videos to pick those that I guess have a great chance of succeeding. It is a form of judgement, but I don't root for them to fail.

@@trailtalespodI figure it is better to practice it before a huge hike on the AT. I think the hike is going to be easy but the planning of nutrition is going to be the hard part. We had an office pool on Pete and Lisa "Me and you and a bag of food". I won the two bucks win they made it to Main but foolishly went "double or nothing" on the finish. They had a heartbreaking "end is near" injury and were knocked off the trail. I'm hoping to get the same trills out of watching the 2024 class.

I wish she had made an announcement of her decision about leaving the trail when she did it and allowed devoted followers to decide if they wanted to continue watching videos instead of what she did. She put videos out at least 7 to 10 days afterwards and had already decided not to continue. Totally acceptable and she owed no one to finish, but being open with the audience that she had decided to go off and stay off the AT would have felt more honest.

I've hiked all over Missouri and even done Amicalola to Neels Gap so I'm not an armchair hiker but I will watch AT hiker videos every year. It's weird to me that you post videos and then talk shit about people who watch your videos. Of course most people are going to look at a hiker and think will they finish or won't they. Sounds to me someone is getting big headed about it.
