The Truth About Your Visceral Fat
Adipose tissue is probably the most demonised tissue in the human body.
Despite it being essential for life as we know it.
Adipose tissue, otherwise known as body fat, is a connective tissue that extends throughout your body. It’s found under your skin (subcutaneous fat), between your internal organs (visceral fat) and even in the inner cavities of bones (bone marrow adipose tissue).
And in today’s video , we will discuss the various locations that adipose tissue can be stored in the body; why too much visceral fat is so dangerous , how do you know how much visceral fat do you have in both a clinical setting and in the comfort of your own home.

Shoutout to all the people who donated their body for videos like this. They may not know it, but it’s helping others take care of themselves by knowing what each body part is, what it does, & how to take care of it.

Can't tell you how much it's appreciated that you cover what WAY too many healthcare providers neglect. It's like the purpose of Medicine is only to keep people alive rather than prevent or help us increase our quality of life. So as an ultra distance runner and weight trainer, THANK YOU!!!!!

I used to be in the normal category but due to university stress and Covid, I started gaining and stress eating. I'm overweight now with a BMI of 26.5. I have stopped snacking completely and have started getting 8000 steps a day and running twice a week, hoping to dip below 25 in BMI by the end of the summer. I wish everyone out there luck with their exercises and hope all stay healthy!

I've been tracking my calories and body weight daily for about 8 months or so now, and last month I finally hit the point where my waist circumference was less than my hips. Dropped all the way from 220 lbs down to 180 lbs. I feel lighter, more energetic, and more in control of my diet, and people comment that I don't look fat, but my BMI is still sitting around 34, making me still obese, and I still have visible fat and bulges around my midsection. My target weight goal is 170 lbs, but that still puts me at a BMI of around 30. So, I would still be considered borderline obese, but last time I was at that weight I had a 6-pack. I like this idea of the waist-to-hip ratio and will incorporate it into my plan, since BMI doesn't work for me and accurate body fat measurement techniques still seem to be out of my grasp.

I've been swimming and weightlifting for a year or so now and have dropped from decently into the 200s to ~180. I still have some pesky fat in the abdomen area but its key to tell myself to just keep going. A big motivator for me is telling myself that skipping out will just delay my wanted progress. Thanks James, for the educational videos!

You have been the only person whose workouts I’ve been able to follow on a very consistent basis in the long term. They are all so relaxing, but challenging. I have high anxiety and a stressful job, and fitting in a workout can be overwhelming, but I genuinely look forward to my time with you James. I don’t “have to” workout, I “get to” when following your videos.

Dr. James! You're truly a blessing! Every single video of yours has been super-informative and has personally helped me find answers for various issues I've faced while working out. Thanks a million and keep this going! The best fitness channel on RU-vid

James I just want to thank you for all your videos. They helped me to be more knowledgeable. Especially, i don't look like a newbie anymore at our gym. I can now bench more than my body weight and have a healthy routine of work out set that works for me. Thanks again and can't wait for another video.

I appreciate your channel as many of your videos are appropriate and simple to understand so that my young sister is using a part of her homeschool education as a resource. I often learn a new thing or two.

James, I love your channel. Thank you so much for making these videos. I'm trying to rehab my messed up body back to shape and your videos are so helpful. Anything on feet and lower leg strengthening and twisted pelvis or anterior pelvic tilt would be helpful to see. And any videos on what exercises could help open the body back up from years of sitting and not being active, posterior chain re alignment and strengthening.

If you're looking to measure your own body fat, the US navy method is the easiest and the most effective among the ones you can do yourself. Skin fold calliper is very difficult to do especially if you have visceral belly fat. The US navy method just requires two tape measurements for men (chest and waist around the navel) and three for women, and gives you an almost DEXA-level accurate reading. It doesn't get the love it deserves

Great video. It explains a lot, especially the difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. I was able to reverse type 2 diabetes by losing excess fat.

I have stated getting DEXA scans to keep track of my fat/muscle/bone mass as I get my fitness back on track and age. First scan was good, bone density is super high, and fat percentage on the upper limit (thought it would be worse), and that was at my lowest conditioning due to best rest, multiple surgeries etc. Looking forward to my follow up to see how my fitness has changed my body composition

Wow! I've been freaking out the past year about hitting the 160 marker and frustrated why no matter what I do I can't seem to drop past it. Looking at the BMI chart makes me feel a whole lot better. For me fitness isn't about the number as it is about sustaining my physical abilities longer. Thanks for the video! Also, should I drink my coffee before my morning jog or after? My brain is telling me I should wait, but my body says we don't go until I have it.

I'm a big guy. I store a lot of fat around my butt too! I have a big butt for a guy. I also workout. I do boxing, weight lifting & crossfit training. By me doing all that and, they way I store fat. Would it keep my visceral fat percentage low? 🤔
@JamesTangFitness
@JamesTangFitness 3 месяца назад
Many thanks. Research suggest that the amount of visceral fat that is inside the body is 10% of your total body fat percentage . So let’s say you are using a bioelectrical impedance scale at home and it tells you you have 20% body fat, well 2% of that would then be your visceral fat For people aged 20-39 , women should be targeting between 21 and 32% body fat. Men should be targeting between 8-19% body fat
@chocolate-soulja40

@@JamesTangFitness well ik I'm never gonna get under 19% body fat, lol. I would have to starv myself for that. I do a lot of weight lifting & crossfit so, I need all the calories I can get, lol.
