I think it's more a question of the tuning parameters applied by the manufacturer. (I'm a process engineer, so background in process control). I recently bought a watch from Shein, from a manufacturer in China, but all the readings I've had so far were in the "good" region. I wish I could access the raw data measurements, before they've applied their tuning factor.

Thanks for posting this. My guess is that the manufacturers of these smart watches might be using skin temperature as a proxy measure of blood glucose level. Not entirely wrong or disingenuous in my view, because there is a complex but relatively proportional correlation between body temperature and glucose level (higher body temperature often reflects high glucose level and vice versa). The relationship is approximate at best; and the additional complexities relate to how our skin may or may not corelate directly to fluctuations of actual blood stream (body) temperature: different parts of the body have different skin temperatures; environmental (room temperature/humidity) would affect these readings; plus, stress (due to hypos or exercise nervous tension etc) have complex effects on skin temperature. All in all, I suspect that these smart watches are not entirely useless, but may be calibrated to perform best under optimal conditions that are seldom universal to all situations or all people. Best wishes.

Thank you for the advice. Although dietary changes can be a life changer for most type 2 diabetics, type ones have a condition that disables the pancreas to do its job almost completely. For this reason we have to poke our selves with needles to deliver insulin externally because our bodies no longer produce it. Diet does help us require less insulin but it is still necessary regardless of the amount of cucumbers e we consume. Thanks again for the advice and stay well.
@HollandAmerica-x1t
@HollandAmerica-x1t 10 месяцев назад
@@typ3me correct it is very wise not to take any sugar aswell since the insuline levels are going up very high when consuming sugar Which is also the culprit of diabetic overweight First of all stop taking sugar then people will experience weight loss which is neccesary to activate the pancreas in type 2 diabetes The pancreas is suffering from fat around it which has to go away aswell as other organs with too much fat around it. The fact remains that it is really difficult to not take any sugar products And therefore the zero sugar diet is especially as well as the glymatic index of different types of foods High levels of insuline in the blood also leads people to feel pretty much exhausted with kind of a dizzy feeling sometimes speaking weird aswell moving slow and very very tired resulting in laying in bed real overtime which in fact feels nice but is really wrong if that insuline level goes down then people feel really so much better and gain energy and momentum This is also where the cucumber comes in pretty well and does its job pretty amazing to lower the glucose levels and so the insuline levels in our blood Sugar is the killer in this game Also blood vessels are being degraded and can end up in the long run in real ampution of feet and even complete legs. Also eye sight is being degraded which can cause people to go blind. Nowadays you see more and more young kids with glasses Most of the time the glasses are the effect of reduced eye sight caused by child diabetics which has to do with the diet of the child in most cases. Since so many kids nowadays are litteraly overweight they can easily develop diabetes Hopefully this will help

@Nightbird.

Apple's watch is NOTHING like these cheap Chinese watches. Apple's sensor has already been proven to work consistently. The problem for Apple is getting them approved by the FDA because the makers of diabetes blood sugar testing products are fighting this tooth and nail because they know once Apple's watch comes out their BILLION dollar business will be OVER. The FDA is corrupt as hell, which is why Apple has been talking about their watch for YEARS now without being able to get it approved.

I bought one of the $25 watches a couple of weeks ago. It is not even close but I had different results than you. It constantly reads 50-90 points low. I am wearing higher up on the wrist above my normal Casio watch. When I was wearing below the wrist there was no consistency or relationship to the glucose meter, it was always low. Now that I am wearing it very high its graphs in the program match my ups and downs, just way low. Like you, I am waiting for apple or someone to bring one out that is correct so I can hand my money to them. FWIIW - The BP, heart rate, spO2 and temp seem to be pretty close though the sp02 readings have none in them (you will see a low reading and re-do it and get the right reading 10% of the time)

My understanding is that there is a delay where blood glucose levels in the blood take time to show up in the fluid beneath the skin on which non-invasive CGMs rely. This is why the watch in the video "lagged" behind the cappilary blood glucose monitor, showing reading that were the case a while ago as opposed to the test time. . It just takes time for the changes in the blood glucose level to show up in that subcutanuous fluid.
@typ3me
@typ3me 15 дней назад
Correct. The watch in the video reading the cgm numbers was only for reference. To test accuracy the non invasive watch was compared to the actual BG. Unfortunately the non invasive watch and the BG readings were very far off.

The advertising on these non-invasive glucose watches are incorrect. They do not monitor "blood" glucose. It appears they monitor Interstitial fluid (IF) glucose. IF is the fluid around your cells and because it contacts capillaries it is an absorber of glucose from the blood. However, this means there is a delay due to that absorption process. It does not require transport as cells do for glucose to get into the cells. It is an absorption so it does happen faster than cell glucose levels. So blood is the source and IF is a relatively quicker absorber and cells require a slower transport. IF glucose monitoring does work but the source must be stable or a time factor considered. Notwithstanding a bad sensor, circuitry, or programming code of the watch itself.
@maiaallman4635
@maiaallman4635 5 месяцев назад
The Dexcom and Libre also measure interstitial fluid. But they both have a wire going under the skin. Whereas all the watch can see, as far as I can figure out, is from the sweat under your watch, or maybe it's doing an infrared reading into your skin?

Could be interesting to do a longer study on these watches. Maybe it's just that the readings, trends and graph are severely delayed compared to CGMs which are already 10-15m behind ? If that's the case, the watches could be somewhat useful to get a vague idea of bg trends during the day or night for someone that does not have access to CGMs ?

from what i've seen from people reviewing the watches, it appears they have a HUGE delay in following the current trend of your blood sugar. like it takes a lot longer for the highs and lows to be readable in your surface skin the way the watches attempt to read the glucose.

You need to know one very important piece of information. The difference between Accu Chek and a watch is huge. Accu check measures sugar from the blood, while the sensors measure from the intercellular fluid. When I reported a malfunction on my Libre2 sensor, they told me that 10 minutes must pass between the blood sugar measurement and the measurement on the sensor. So I believe that this watch also shows its value well, but you should find out on which principle it works. It's a shame that they didn't write it in the instructions for that rather expensive device.
@typ3me

Depends on the use- your research was not specific to the population addressed, This watch seems to be of great value for early Dx dm2 or Diabetic type 2 early stages, in other words, not seeking to discover Hypo or severe glycemic values. I would not use it on a population the detection of critical values is necessary, I suspect that If you are someone with hyperglycemia stable, not brittle, or not leading to life life-threatening situations, if there is any doubt, I would confirm with the more invasive monitoring. You are right, more sensitive and specific devices should be developed. Understanding it will creep the price initially 3- 5x.

One quick question, did this watch have an allowance for manual fasting blood sugar input? If so, that might have improved its predictive accuracy towards glucose spikes at least. But I doubt it would be able to predict hypoglycemia or lows. Individual glucose curves and dips are probably far too unique and difficult for the algorithm to properly map, I'd imagine.

Thanks for the review! Excellently conducted. I have to agree 100% these watches are dangerous for diabetics to rely on, you would be better off testing urine sugar like the 1950s, to see if the renal threshold was exceeded (i.e. over 160-200 mg/dl+) than to rely on these watches. I have the F57-L watch, which you reviewed earlier. It basically is a random number generator for glucose, never below 6 mmol, or over 7 mmol/L, either a built in design flaw or just outright practical joke, a toy. I also got the Filiekeu F57, both of which use the H Band App. To be fair, The F-57 Filiekeu has some good features such as apnea detection and Sp02, and is very much like this watch, only it was 40 $ not 150 $. But, I think all these H band paired app watches use a similar proprietary algorithm day to day, baked into their equations with pre-programmed humps (assumed glucose spikes after each meal, at 10:30 AM, 3pm, and about 8 pm.), but not tracking real world actual spikes. So technically, that is a kind of fraud, intentional or not. However, that aside, the semi redeeming feature is that the F-57 and some of these other watches allow a manual input of your estimated fasting glucose, which then allows the pre-programmed spikes to somewhat better approximate real world curves better (glucose tends to spike 50%, after meal, and dip 50% at night or during lows, above and below the average glucose level, as a rule of thumb). When I averaged out my blood glucometer readings to the F-57 Filiekeu I get about a 85.5% accuracy. I am not diabetic, My highs postprandial 1 hour and 1/2 hour respectively were 127-144 in my glucometer, and 141-157, on the Filiekeu (between the normal mode, and custom adjusted modes at 90 and 99 mg/dl fasting). In the fasting state, which for this watch is pre-programmed at before 9 AM, again at 12 Pm, 4-6 pm, and after 10 pm, I have also tested 2 other people, and got relatively accurate results *to their known labs. They had fasting glucose of 79 and 110 respectively, whereas mine hovers between 90 and 99. In any event I believe these watches at best can give a ballpark, for NORMAL range blood glucose individuals, but can be wildly off for anyone with hyper or hypoglycemia, AKA diabetics. All and all, maybe in time the technology will improve, and it def. is intriguing, but until the proprietary algorithms can be cracked, and allowance for customization (such as Artificial intelligence taking into account all the variables of BMI, Blood pressure, Age, pulse wave, HRV, HR, temperature and Sp02, the last time you ate etc. ), these infrared light watches are going to be shooting off target. When I averaged my results out, between normal mode and custom input mode on my F57 Filiekeu watch, my average eAG was 102. approximating an A1C in the ballpark of 5.2, which matches my glucometer derived A1C estimates (5.1 -5.4) on two different glucometers I have. So for me, the F57 is about as accurate as a crappy glucometer 85% accurate, whereas FDA allows glucose meters to be as inaccurate as 80% .

Thank you so much for your detailed and insightful comment! Your thorough analysis and experience with the F57-L watch and its related models are truly valuable. It's evident that you've put a lot of effort into understanding their performance and limitations. Your observations regarding the watches' accuracy for individuals with normal blood glucose levels versus those with hyper or hypoglycemia are particularly noteworthy. It's promising that these watches have the potential to provide ballpark estimates for people within the normal range, and your explanation of how manual input can improve accuracy is quite enlightening. I appreciate your perspective, your comment adds a lot of depth to the discussion around these glucose-monitoring watches, and I'm grateful for the knowledge you've shared. It's clear that you've approached this topic with a critical and informed perspective. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts!

@@typ3me You bet! And thank you for your in depth videos and blood test comparisons! Invaluable. I think we can unanimously agree then, for diabetics, these watches are inaccurate at best, and dangerous at worst. A glimmer of hope though, if the technology can be perfected and better algorithms developed. Yes, the calibration feature did improve accuracy I believe, considerably, but technically that means the device STILL depends on a blood input, for finer calibration, when the whole purpose is non-invasive accurate estimation.

An interesting test with this watch would be have been to wrap it around a paper towel roll or something that’s like a human wrist, but isn’t. My skeptical thoughts are that it’s just throwing numbers at you, hoping that they’ll be close enough for enough of the reading comparisons to make it look like it’s doing something. If it says a roll of paper towels has a BG level of 127, you know it’s all snake oil (snake watch?).

I have had H Band products before needed for BP monitoring , I used the device, and then actually got round to doing a cross comparison to the actual cuff, the difference was terrible , i was still really high where the H band had identified I was in the much lower range. No diabetes trained professional has ever notified me to even give these through the skin models a go, . given the UK Driving regulator wont actually recognise CGM yet, there is NO way this sort of idea is going to be anywhere compliant. Pretty much a snake oil product for now , borne out by that fact that if the R&D of apple cant get this idea to an accurate delivery , what does some Asian supplier have any chance to be reliable . I cant take the risk , its too dangerous to rely on this

i have an hband health band with glycose monitor and it just gives the same plot every day, with slightly different (random) numbers. it was last years version. maybe this one is better. mine did not react to not eating any food or eating chocolate - it always gave the same graph. new versions also measure uric acid and blood lipids

Surely you should be able to calibrate it to a good location of a major blood vessel. Contact & location must be vital for a good reading. Or is it just a toy?

My experience with CGM’s was similar, with unreliable data the first day or two, loss of signal or errors, due to large swings in BG, and then hard errors the last couple of days, that prevented me from getting a full 14 days of use from the sensor.

Never use alcohol to clean your fingers to check your blood glucose levels,this is not the right way.Just wash your hands with soap,dry them well,than wipe the first drop away and use the second drop to measure your blood glucose levels. This I know, because I'm a Type 1 diabetic for more than 20 years.

Thanks, Martin. A as Paramedic currently working in the field and type 1, the preferred method is still good old-fashioned rubbing alcohol. However, you should always do what is best for you. We all want it to work but its just a scam. It can guess pretty much taking into account the activity the watch registers. In order to do a good test, you should not even wear the watch when doing the activities. In order to do a good test.

Agreed its a scam, esp. for diabetics and those with very high and very low blood sugars - which could be deadly for folks with moderate or severe diabetes. The technology itself, seems intriguing, and maybe the science has some basic premise using light to detect hemodynamic changes, but I bet the watch was tested on a dozen or so people in China with normal glucose values, and they gave it their stamp of approval for proprietary algorithms - but even then it has pre-determined programmed post meal spikes, and lows, so its using artificial intelligence to simulate glucose highs after meal, but doesnt reflect exactly real world glucose. I tested the F57 on a slug that was creeping across my lawn, in the summer evening - and it registered a 81 mg/dl glucose (LoL) I also tested 2 people, they ranged from 79- 110 in the fasting state, and my 2 dogs averaged 85 mg/dl fasted. These are seemingly believable numbers, but then again, the sample size is too small and we already know for sure it way under-estimates for Diabetics. In fact, on the F57 Filiekeu watch, it doesn't allow for a blood sugar any higher than 270 mg/dl, either fasted or postprandial. So it fails as a diabetes watch, even if it could detect real time blood glucose dynamics.

They are mostly junk for catching big swings. They take a while to catch up to reality. At the same time last summer I was supposed to refill my sensor script a couple of days before going away on vacation. Turned out the script was expired and they needed a refill, so the sensors would not be available on time. I got desperate then saw the watches on Amazon. I figured in an emergency, I could give it a try. Good news, it did help just enough. Bad news it really dragged on catching my one low blood sugar event on vacation. Good news there was I have decent awareness so, took care of it before things got really bad. So, these can be vaugly useful in a pinch. Just don't make a habit of relying on them. Hopefully, we will soon see better sensor tech.

Hi Jean. Well it was real. I paid allot for it and thank god they allowed me to return it via Amazon. The link no longer works.
