I don’t understand why a pilot would have the power to switch off the transponder without authorization or an override. Turning a plane into a ghost plane shouldn’t be that easy.

I agree, it would be the same if we all had a button in our car to turn the license plates on and off. I've asked a few pilots but never heard a good reason for it, it's permanently on and must be, otherwise it's a possible hijack seen from the air control towers' perspective. But there must be a reason why the switch is there in the cockpit...

Keep in mind what that transponder switch is for. It's not just when then plane is airborne. When the plane is parked, gassing up, it does not need that system on. Or , in an emergency, it could be toggled off and on as a single to ATC. Pilots need control. Think about the lights on our cars. Daytime Running Lights make is safe, helps people see you, but you still may need to turn them off.

But, why the transponder can be turned off manually? Shouldn't it be something that always stays on.
@johnstuartsmith
@johnstuartsmith 8 месяцев назад
Anything on an airplane's electrical system can be turned off by manually tripping the appropriate circuit breaker. Electrical faults that could cause a fire is a more common danger than rogue pilots. Also a transponder on a plane identifies itself by adding information to the return signal the radar station bounces off the plane. Once MH370 had flown far enough away from land that there weren't any radar bouncing signals off it, the transponder wouldn't have a signal to transpond with.

I enjoyed this well made documentary on MH370. I will have to look up the name and whereabouts of the trench. Presumably, according to other MH370 documentaries, the jet's final resting place is believed to be near an ocean seafloor ridge approximately 1900 miles west southwest of Perth Australia, along the 7th Arc - just east of it, as the arc turns. Since the discovery and solving of Amelia Earhart's disappearance a few years back, the disappearance of Malaysia Air flight MH370 has since claimed the dubious honor of being the most iconic unsolved mystery in commercial aviation history. To the innocent passengers and crew of MH370 may all of you rest in peace, and may you live again in another life. Amen. 😔❤

The only problem with that is that planes fly at such a high rate of speed that they disintegrate upon contact. Hitting water at speed and from a sudden extreme drop would be the force equivalent of hitting solid matter. I.e. the same as hitting the ground or a mountain. There would not be many large intact pieces left, the engines perhaps, possibly the nose or part of it.

Someone wanted to explore the south Indian Ocean waters for commercial or military reasons and needed a cover to do it. Its sad that MH370 was the victim. The plane will be found once this "exploration" is complete. The hijack or pilot suicide theories don't make sense here. Hijackers would have diverted somewhere to make demands while a suicidal pilot would have simply ditched into South China sea without even muting communication. Its most probable that GPRS/ transponder was jammed before the plane was diverted/ taken off the sky. (Remember that the route is heavily militized and jamming technology is part of their equipment.) The "satellite handshake" theory is a decoy fed to the general public weeks after the plane disappeared and it remains the only narrative strongly defended to date. Why would someone fly +7hrs to "no where". How much fuel did it take at Kuala Lumpur for the 4hr journey? It is alleged to have flown for 7-8hrs. The alleged crash distance is much longer than double the planned flight path. Aren't these big discrepancies?

I'm not saying I necessarily 'buy' the above theory... I'm almost certain in my mind, fwiw, that it was the captain's doing, although that call made to his phone just before the plane went down sure is 'hinky' - why has nothing ever been divulged about the caller? The final piece of info in this video is pretty interesting: 30 mins before take-off from KL the captain received a phone call on his private cell from a phone with a simcard bought by a lady with fake ID and that was the only call ever made with that card. The location of the caller is unknown. The phone has been identified but the information not released to the public. I do not personally believe in the suicide theory but hope sincerely that we might get to know through solid evidence what happened to MH-370 🙏

As spoke upon in most of the decent documentaries they believe he was trying to negotiate with the Malaysian Government involving the release of his family member and prisoner who was the opposition at that time against the current government of Malaysia. He may have been flying it around hopelessly in hopes of possibly getting the individual released but that obviously didn't work so he then went ahead with downing the plane as planned incase his Plan A. Did not work. Sad . He flew in a circle for 20 minutes which they believe he may have been trying to negotiate at this time. If this was true the government could never admit this nor recover evidence pointing to this issue.

It is a wonder that in the age of social media that this plane just disappeared. It would have meant that the either it was so sudden or so gradual that all the passengers were totally unaware of what happened. I hope searcher do find the plane some day and bring closure to the families but also to solve this mystery. But more importantly what are air carriers doing so that something like this can't happen again.
@AnonOmis1000
@AnonOmis1000 8 месяцев назад
Assuming this plane was capable of providing internet access, at least one of those passengers had to have made a post or talked to someone during that flight. If there is no one coming forward saying they saw activity from a passenger after the transponder was turned off, then the passengers had to all been incapacitated quickly. The only way that can happen and the plane to not crash right then and there is for a deliberate act from the pilot.

Besides safety reasons, unexpected circumstances may require a transponder to be turned off - a plane briefly intentionally flying in restricted areas, for example. It makes more sense to include them during manufacturing than to add on post-production. An issue that arises in G. A. is pilots turning it off in order to hide erratic maneuvers and changes in altitude or speed while getting high on dope. If they filed a flight plan and you want to follow it in real time, it isn't difficult to pinpoint when it happens. Turning off the transponder for 15-30 mins is the stupidest thing to do. Especially when at the time it's turned back on, the plane is thousands of feet higher and speed is near the max limit.

A popular theory, but what would "they" use a stolen 777 for, exactly, and why would anyone go to such great lengths to steal one? There's a huge worldwide inventory of deeply discounted large mothballed airliners. The terrorists could afford to upgrade to an A380 by nowe. Simply buying or renting an empty surplus airliner wouldn't trigger a massive search and investigation, and it would be cheaper and easier than buying or renting a secret giant hanger next to a secret 10,000 runway. Buying or renting a plane whenever it was closer to execute whatever operation required a big airliner would also avoid the tedious personnel hassles involved with dealing with whoever was tasked with killing or at least disposing of up to 239 passengers, their luggage and all the extraneous cargo, as well as the ongoing difficulties and expenses involved in keeping a stolen 777 hidden but still flyable for the last 9 years while the world continued to search for it.

But MH370 was flying south over the ocean with no land in sight except the south pole but didn't have enough fuel. So MH370 didn't have a destination to fly to except south by compass. @@MadnomadMthere would be no need to even deal with that. All the captain has to do is fly above a certain height and depressurize the plane and everyone would go unconscious quickly. He could wear his supplemental air. The only thing he would really have to do first is do something to the co-pilot so he can't intervene. Then he puts his face mask on at a very high elevation and depressurize has the plane and everyone goes hypoxic except him. Then after a little while he can fly freely as everyone else will be dead

The lithium battery possibility deserves consideration but the the question remains, why the hell the plane's transponder was turned off?

Probably the plane was on fire? So the pilot turned off the transponder and some other electrical. But it just doesnt make sense.

There is no doubt that the aircraft crashed. The question we will perhaps never know is what happened. And if it was a deliberate act, was it one of the pilots or was there anyone else in the cockpit that night.

Irrespective of what actually happened, it is shocking to me that a case full of 200+KG of highly (in)flammable lithium - ion batteries could be aboard, possibly right up against the electronic nerve centre of the plane. I can't even order a cigarette lighter by mail order because the postal authorities in my country (Rep. of Ireland) will almost certainly seize it, in spite of the fact that lighters are invariably shipped without fuel! (That said, while not quite 100% convinced, I do suspect that the captain was responsible for the disappearance and loss of the plane, and the lives aboard, to a 95%+ probability. I'm also inclined to think that rather than it being a solo act, it was a conspiracy, based on that weird final call to his phone, and the witholding of details about the caller. That, or at the very least, some highly placed person 'knew something', most likely before the fact. This wasn't a case of the captain's wife looking to know would he like meatloaf for dinner!)

Watch the new episode on Green Dot Aviation about the topic and you will be 99.9% convinced. It just makes all sense

Occam's Razor: If more than one explanation is possible, the simplest explanation is more likely to be true. Conclusion: The pilot hijacked and crashed the plane.

the fact that they cut funding to solve this was weird usually they do what ever it takes to find out what happen to a 70million dollar plane

They should make it to where aircrafts sends messages back to the satellite 🛰 and ground controls around it that it has detected a cabin decompression also if it was to ever happen.

What if, the "ping" which until today people believe MH370 ended in the 7th arc, was "made up". That would explain why MH370 was not found even after intensive search in that area. Just a thought

A bigger what if. Was the flight simulator evidence "made up" to explain it away.
